  1. Damn! There's more fabric in that suit than ion my canopy! LOL
  2. Any of the Altimasters are just great. The digital stuff is fine, but pricey, and won't tell your altitude any better.
  3. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ask Microsoft! Point taken, Rob!
  4. Am I the only jumper out there who thinks any company should THOROUGHLY de-bug their product before releasing on the unsuspecting public with a lot of hype? Why are we being charged big bucks to test their item in the field?
  5. I do not know the persentage of RSL saves but I do know this: the RSL is meant as a backup to pulling the reserve ripcord. Just because it is probably faster than your manual pull does not make it the primary system. Depend on nothing but your wits and training.
  6. A Sharpie marker tends to be a bit acidic - it has a lot of "bite". I recommend coloring the canopy as late as possible before the jump. Toss the canopy after the jump. (Not before the jump, as a lot of the posters here will tell you to.) There is nothing wrong with a round on Bridge Day, although I would feel better with a steerable round.
  7. Only 1 inch or so, IS INSUFFICIENT. There, now you've had yet another "disinterested party" chime in. You MAY be describing it entirely wrong, granted. But what's the harm in having a RIGGER take a look at it before you make your very next jump? Have it checked out. Please. ...Pretty please.
  8. Yeah, I do - - don't! Have you ever heard of harness rash? Imagine a hard opening.
  9. That can be a double-edged sword that cuts both ways... On the one hand if you screw up and look like everyone else, they'll just say; "Who the heck was that guy that landed the wrong way?" And you might not get singled-out. John, Always remember it is better to be picked on than ignored! But with that neon green helmet, it'll be: "Who is that idiot with the green helmet? Hey! You! Yeah, you! Come here! I want to talk to you!"
  10. *** No....try tennis What he said. If you are that neurotic about the dangers involved in jumping the safest equipment we have ever had in the sport - stay on the ground. Asking for a third chute may get you bounced from the class anyway. There is no way to conveniently put a round reserve on your chest.
  11. I believe the concept posted was refering to compressed gas. It would be cold upon expansion. It would still recoil in a closed launch, hot or cold.
  12. Easily seen in freefall or on the DZ, hey? Safety First!
  13. But here we are not talking about either pneumatical or ballistic lauch... we are talking about rocket launch. Mr. Netown would talk of the action of expanding gases on the rocket, met by reaction of the rocket against the expanding gases. There is no recoil to firing a rocket launcher. There is no recoil to firing a RECOILESS rocket launcher, i.e., one open at the back to vent the gasses. If this is the style you want to use, what will be the effect of these hot gasses on the jumper? A closed system will recoil against the jumper.
  14. A question: would mounting a Pro Dytter / ProTrack or other audible alti INSIDE your helmet result in a lag in reading the altitude? Would there be any pressure differential inside the helmet to slow the altitude readout? I do not own one but I am considering purchasing a unit.
  15. I use a silicone cloth meant for wiping down firearms. It is small, handy to put in your gear bag and works just fine.
  16. I'm not scared of low exits, but if I had a canopy that routinely ate up 10+ seconds opening, I'd be fairly "concerned" making a 2000 foot exit. I like to be open above 1800 feet or so. If I had a canopy that ate up 10+ seconds opening, I'd look for a new canopy.
  17. When I started my jump training, all students had to learn to pack their own chutes. Your first jump was on a canopy you packed yourself.
  18. Yeah, you're right. How tight was your ass puckered when you exited is the real question. A canopy that snivels for 1000 feet is how many seconds from when you throw the PC till you're open? About 10 or 12 seconds, right? I've NEVER seen a canopy that takes that much time to be open, but I'll take your word for it. Why does everyone (most everyone) seem to be scared spitless of low hop'n'pops?
  19. . A compressed gas rocket that would pull a 17 foot round parachute that’s attached to a single line out and away from you and hopefully above a tangled mess of malfunctioning squares... could be made It would weigh just under ten pounds and be about 15 inches long and 3 inches across. Rigged with a cypress ‘type’ of activation device the cost would be in the area of 5500.00 ________________________________________________ When we speak of pneumatically and ballistically launched tertiary reserves, let us not forget Mr. Newton - - action and reaction - - a ny device launched with enough energy to clear a malfunction would HURT
  20. QuoteThe apex vent does not prevent oscillations. It vents high pressure air during deployment reducing opening shock. The come is a variety of sizes and designs. Vents such a “double L”, 5TU and tri-vent are designed to prevent oscillations by allowing air to vent out one side of the canopy. A by product of this is limited forward speed. The apex vent WAS designed to reduce oscillations and does so to some extent. The various modifications were used to give forward speed and turning ability and along with the deployment sleeve made sport parachuting possible. Any oscillation dampening is a serendipitous by-product.
  21. Would not a temporary locking pin be just the ticket? I've used one for removing broken rubber bands for years. Works just fine and can't damage your bag/canopy.
  22. This winter liner plus stick-on Velcro seems to be the hot setup. I'm going to try it.
  23. Buy a ProTec for use while a student. If/when you feel comfortable and your dz allows its use, start looking for a full face. Borrow one or two to see if you might like one first, though. They are expensive to leave in the closet. ProTecs are a good helmet, light weight and better at shock absorbing than some of the "cool" carbon fiber helmets. Cost much less, too.
