I just had a long talk with my parents. After reading some of the posts I feel like the reaction I got was pretty normal. They do not want me to do this or even skydive (I don't think they realize the difference in the danger of the two). Talking to them was really hard...i even cried (I'm such a girl). My parents are worried that I will forget about everything else and just drift around for the rest of my life, but they did assure me that they would continue to support me (mainly financially) no matter what I do. Well my parents are way less than thrilled that I want to start jumping. I find this ironic because I am a nascar driver, and my parents don't mind that. In fact, they support it 100%! They pay for everything involved. My dad built my car, and he does all the repairs. Now from my experience, base jumping is much more dangerous than the track I race at, but still! I am just getting into base...haven't jumped yet, but one story like that balances out two of the stories that Tom tells his students to make sure they know what they're getting into. It was stated before in the thread that he did have an experienced jumper check his gear at the site just before his jump. It is really unfortunate that we don't have video of this, but a lot of really good points have been brought up. Maybe a video would have cleared this thing up is a few hours, but the speculations that have come up on this thread are potentially more valuable.
