I doubt that any one in this forum regularly watches Gilmore Girls, but tonight’s episode was rife with talk about base jumping. One of the supporting characters (Logan) is part of the “Life and Death Brigade” and decided to go base jumping with a couple of friends (none of who have any experience). There was no jump actually shown, but the story is that Logan pulls super low with a couple of cliff strikes (and admits to being drunk before the jump). He ends up in the hospital with a partially collapsed lung, broken ribs, internal bleeding, a broken ankle, lots of contusions, and a concussion. I found it interesting that someone in hollywood finally had the balls to show that base jumping isn’t a glorified stunt and that people sometimes get seriously hurt doing it. Thanks for the original information. I was confused why you'd be so against a course that taught about BASE, because you had taught one yourself that included packing, determining technicality of a jump/object, and the "ethics" of jumping. You presented more information in those eight classes than some mentors teach during their time with a student. The new information really cleared it up. Obviously the event calendar at CSI has been highly edited since being posted, but from what I saw there was nothing advertising an actual jump. I remember a month long class offered at CSI last April by you Tom. It was a very stimulating course, and I know it inspired at least one person to take up jumping. This slider is not (currently) for line overs. It's just to let students experience steering a canopy without having the steering lines routed through the slider or keeper rings, just like they will have to on a slider down base jump. The idea is you can't skydive a base rig without a slider, but this lets you simulate a slider off jump. "I reject your reality and substitute my own" ~Adam Savage

That exact thought has been swimming around in my head for days now. Tom was my biggest support and mentor in base. He even came to see me in California when I was learning how to skydive. Unfortunately, he went back to Texas a little early this last summer, and I never even got to jump with him. Last night Coy was telling me that when he was in Norway with Tom(before I had met Coy) Tom was telling every one that he had this great chick packing for him in Twin, who was going to be one hell of a base jumper. If you've ever seen Radix you know that Shane does "death camp" all the time even for people with no skydives. This jump was very well planned out, in fact we waited three days for perfect conditions. There were life vests, rescue swimmers, and three very experienced jumpers coaching me. The delay was decided on because I was jumping a round and we didn't want to risk a random gust of wind (which happen all the time in Twin) blowing me over the land. I was just comfortable jumping the bridge because I have been around it for 18 years, and I go out there almost every day to watch jumpers. This jump for me was just a little teaser. I don't plan on jumping any other objects, or even the bridge again, any time soon. I've heard it all before, but it's all important enough to be said again. I was never planning to do more than this base jump until after a lot of skydives. I know my canopy experience sucks, that's why I jumped a round into the water. Having so many experienced locals and hanging out with, and packing for, so many jumpers, and "over hearing" FJCs, I have gleaned a ton of great information. I made the decision to jump after taking in a lot. I've read "the list." I know what happens when things go wrong, and I'm involved in another dangerous sport (nascar). I know I'm bringing up something a little older, but I just had the most unexpected response from my father.
