  1. I was going to suggest the same thing. I've lived in Florida and now on the Texas coast. I have a small window unit that I install in my bedroom window during the summer. My main A/C gets set somewhere between 80 and 85 just to help keep the mold at bay and the window unit gets run for a few hours to cool down the bedroom and then turned off each night. I am incapable of sleeping well when I'm hot and sweaty, but hell if I'm going to keep the whole apartment at 72 degrees! I'd be paying over $300 a month to do that. Killing threads since 2004.
  2. See my thread here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3818754;#3818754 For me it's a no brainer. It is a tad bit bulky in my pocket, but I've decided it is well worth it. Definitely check the Amazon prices before you decide it is too expensive. I found it for $30ish. Killing threads since 2004.

Not to mention, if you far under the covers and then try rolling over you might just blow yourself up! Killing threads since 2004.

  5. One true Texas experience not to miss out on if you are in or passing through the Austin area is stopping for barbecue. My favorites are Smitty's in Lockhart and City Market in Luling. Both are not far outside Austin and can easily be fit into heading from that area down towards San Antonio. I've had barbecue all over Texas and all over the country. There is tons of really decent and even really excellent barbecue out there, but so far these two places take the cake for the combination of amazing food and unbeatable ambiance. If I had to choose one for an out of towner only stopping once I would go for Smitty's. http://www.smittysmarket.com/history1.htm Killing threads since 2004.
  6. That's one thing that always frustrated me about that movie. Love the movie, but for so many people that is all that they will ever know of that time frame of space exploration. I hate that such a large group of people would only ever associate Grissom as the dude that "screwed the pooch" according to a hollywood movie rather than for the amazing guy he was. 7. I can't believe it. I posted this message last night, didn't do a damn thing and now the problem stopped happening today. We'll see if it is just a fluke or if it actually quit doing it. I literally had not even seen the vehicle between when I posted last night and the first time I went out this morning. It's freakin insane. Killing threads since 2004.
  8. In searching online I've found accounts of 6 Cherokees 96-98, 5.2-5.9L that have an identical problem. It has something to do with the remote. I can hit the memory 2 button inside and it's fine. I hit the unlock on remote 2 and it's all nuts. I just quit using it 4 yrs ago. About to toss it in a drawer again. Killing threads since 2004.
  9. Hmmm...severe damage to part of it. Don't know the correct part name off hand, but coupler of some sort up front went bad. Replacing w/ aftermarket but aftermarket front not compatible w/ stock rear, so replacing both. Normally try to find a used part for something like this but have 2 days off out of 15 and drive 50 miles back and forth to 2nd job. Couldn't afford the time to wait and look for the part so I'm going with a new part. At the moment it's disengaged up front for me to get around while waiting for the part. All in all it blows, but I just paid the stupid thing off so it will be around for as long as the money I put into it is still far less than I'd be paying per year on a car note. 10. I wonder if Gremlins were gnawing on the drive shaft I've about to replace too! I love my Jeep, everything except the gas mileage anyway. I would give anything for an inline 6 over the 5.2 now, but I really needed the v8 back when I bought it and was towing my camper. I have thought time and again about trading it in, but I can't even come close to what I have in the Jeep (all leather, all electronic, sun roof, 4wd, etc.) without dropping a huge chunk of money or just getting something the same age as my Jeep. 11. Thanks man. I did post on the Jeep forum once and just ended up with a bunch of people in a pissing match about which of two options that had nothing to do with my problem would be a better fix for me. Kinda like asking which canopy to get on here and having your thread turn into an argument over AAD vs. no AAD. I haven't done much digging yet. I have the day off and will get the manual out, but I thought I'd throw a post out there quick tonight just in case anyone has run into the same problem. Killing threads since 2004.
  12. I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, 4wd w/ the 5.2L v8. When I use the remote to unlock the doors all of the memory settings go nuts. I know that the #1 and #2 remotes correspond to the #1 and #2 memory settings in the vehicle. Both #1 and #2 are set the same. When I click the unlock button (on #2 remote, I don't have #1) the side view mirrors go nuts, like having a seizure and usually end up pointed in some random direction. The direction is left pointing is not always the same. Sometimes the electric seat moves itself forward/backward, etc. There is no regular result of pushing the button other than something always happens. I quit using the remote for years because of this and only recently put a new battery in it and tried again. It did it in 2006 and it's still doing it now. In the meantime I replaced the Jeep's computer (for unrelated reasons) with no change in what happens. It's not the end of the world, but it is horribly annoying. Any thoughts? 13. Never really had any problem with that. I wear the 5.11 pants that have really deep pockets though so the stretcher usually rests a little higher when I get my body into a heavy lift. Killing threads since 2004.
  14. I've never had any complaints. I do feel like I hear a little better without the case, but it's worth it. Killing threads since 2004.
  15. If you have an iPhone and are anything but the most gentle person with it, it's time to invest in an Otter Box. http://www.otterbox.com/iphone-3g-3gs-cases/iphone-3g-3gs-defender-case/ I've owned my iphone for the last year and have had it in an Otter Box case the whole time. The case is big, the case is bulky and the case is expensive (~$55, but you can find it for $30 on Amazon). The case is also the reason my phone that was run over by my own ambulance followed by three more vehicles had nothing more than a cracked screen. I got out of the truck and didn't realize my phone was on my lap and within a few seconds on the ground. We drove away and ran over it. Apparently some bystanders across the street saw it get run over 3 more times before picking it up. Now being a touch screen there is no way to armor plate the screen, so it cracked and my Otter Box case shows where the screen was lying on some rocks. The rest of the phone had not even a single scratch. Literally, looks just as good as the day I took it out of the box and put it in the case. It still rang when called, dinged when texted and still connected to the computer with no problem. I called Apple to inquire about my Apple Care plan and replacement of the screen. They liked the story...hadn't ever heard of an Apple product getting run over by an ambulance before, and that it happened to someone who has owned Apple products his whole life, and in the end offered me a free replacement rather than fixing the cracked screen (I can only assume the one with a cracked screen will be shipped out as refurbed here in the near future). Anyway, were it not for the Otter Box case my phone would no doubt have been obliterated and Apple would never have offered a free replacement. And as for the case...it has a few divots on the screen protector where it was lying on rocks when it got run over so it has to be replaced, but those were the only markings on the case too. Both case and phone stood up to being run over by FOUR vehicles. So, go for it. It's big, it's bulky and I'll never own an iPhone without one. Killing threads since 2004.

  17. Excellent. My sister did an absolutely amazing job, scanning thousands of photos and then editing them to various songs and compiling everything on an hour and a half long dvd for my parents. The only thing she regrets about the process is that she's now been asked to do one for my brother's upcoming wedding, for work and for a friend's family. Have fun with it! 18. For the mailman I think I would just go with a card with a short and sincere message, maybe left in your mailbox with his name on it. If you knew for a fact that they were into gardening, etc. you could go with a plant, but there are plenty of people out there that just can't be bothered with that kind of stuff, but would feel extremely guilty just letting it die. As for the hairdresser...unfortunately you cost her big bucks. If she does fit you into the schedule, even though you would be paying her for it, that is a slot someone else would probably be paying for anyway. While a bottle of wine or some flowers is nice, it's no $300. I really like the idea of working in a new appointment and "tipping" her the full value of a missed appointment. Might seem like a lot to spend, but if you value your friendship and value having someone you trust to style your hair it is a minimal price to pay to keep the relationship in good standing. 19. I guess I'm lucky that I just go into the dorm at the station and crash out on a bed. Do you have a laptop? Turn your chair away from the window with the laptop on your lap? Really only works if you aren't a head bobber. Might give your co-workers a good laugh if you if you are though! Killing threads since 2004.
  20. I have numerous Facebook friends all up in arms about the report that President Obama called the African American speed skater Shani Davis following his win but hasn't called anyone else. Anyone know if he's made a practice of calling all of the medal winners as I believe some other presidents have? I really don't care one way or another, but it made me curious and I didn't see anything about it on the web. Killing threads since 2004.
  21. My skydiving career was shortlived, but it started with a tandem with my dad, brother and a friend. I had been suggesting we go for a while and one night while driving back to town after a rough week at work he called and asked "so do you still want to go and jump out of a plane?" Earlier that summer I had gotten him into scuba diving and a year later he got into whitewater rafting. He and both my brothers came out and did additional tandem while I was jumping regularly. 22. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+PIXMA+MX330+Multifunction+Printer/+Copier/+Scanner/+Fax/9253327.p?id=1218069254290&skuId=9253327 This is the one she bought and used the scanner software that was included. I imagine the feature to crop the pics is all in the scanner, so you can probably just find it to use with any scanner. This one did well though making it through thousands of photos. In fact, I think the scanner made it through the process in better shape than my sister. I have a different (and less expensive) version of the same printer/scanner/copier and I love it. Killing threads since 2004.
  23. I've asked my sister what combo of scanner and software she used that had that feature. I'll post back when I hear from her. Killing threads since 2004.

  25. Whatever scanner you get, keep your eye out for software that will recognize multiple pictures being scanned at once and crop them apart for you. My sister just finished scanning updwards of 5000 family photos for a family DVD she made and that saved her hours upon hours of time. Not the best option for scanning a few pics here and there as it occasionally gets it wrong, but if you are doing lots even if it only gets 80% of them right that is a lot of time saved. I'll ask her what software she was using and post again. Killing threads since 2004.
