  1. I wouldn't try the handgun trick in Canada or the UK. Way too much hassle with import permits or possesion permits. I routinely check my gear. btw. Sometimes my gear bag is the onlp piece of luggage to arrive. It's so heavy, they have to hand load it. My only funny experience was on a trip to Switzerland. The AirCanada check-in guy wasn't sure you could bring a parachute onto a plane! He called down to baggage and was told to put his phone on speakerphone. the head of baggage then shout out: You idiot! How do you hink they get up high enough to jump and land? When I was returning through Zuerich, I arrived very early just in case...the woman at Lufthansa asked why-when I told her about the guy in Calgary, she just stood ther open-mouthed and eventually said that if they didn't let skydivers bring their gear on the plane, half their winter business would disappear.

  2. Whoa!
    1. collapse the slder
    2. twist the slider a few times
    3. tuck it in with the bungee and the band
Add in: grab rear risers, look for possible collision with jumper who's too busy stowing all his gear to look around, loosen off chest strap, lift visor, stow booties if on RW jump, look again for other unaware jumpers, locate DZ and check altitude, look for alternate landing areas because you had a couple of line twista and a slider that didn't come slamming down.
How high do you have to pull to do all this? Especially on a jump frpm a Cessna 206 or 182!

I just collapse mine and jam it under the back of my helmet.

Is that like a PIM? :P
Just a little translation for the Canadians on board. Remember us? The land of PFF!

  4. already started working on that a year or so ago-just want to get my skills up. from the number of people I know with one eye who skydive, we'll need more than one Otter if they can all be in the same space at the same time without walking into each other before we get off the ground. :P

  5. To avoid having to look at your alti so often, get yourself a Neptune and set the swoop alarms for 1000' 600' and 300'. Visualize what the ground looks like at those altitudes and memorize those visuals. Take a canopy piloting course with video of your approach. I now know when I'm at those altitudes by sight, not by sound. Practice your approach at around 3000' to see what your glide rate is in each direction and count the seconds between the beeps to learn how fast you get from one point to another on your pattern. If you have a low wing-loading, you might want to turn to your final leg at 250' instead of 300'. It still should give you at least 10 secs to regain full flight on your canopy, but you won't have as much time to anticipate and flare too soon. (The old-ground's coming at me and I think I'm at double my heigth, when in reality you're still 20' off the ground.) If you're not afraid to land near other people, when your feet are at their head level, it's time to slowly flare. Hope this helps. It sure improved my landings.B|

  6. The best advice I got for landing, other than practice your PLF's, was think of riding down escaltor on approach. I certainly don't watch my feet when I step off the escalator, and I've never fallen walking off one-at least, not when sober.:$. There's a point where it just looks right to step off the escalator and continue walking. That's where you need to stab down the second stage of your flare and land with a silly grin on your face.

  7. IMHO, most one-eyes fly better. Just thought that bigger DZs have bigger planes-a 206 leaves you with a 6-way at best

What do i do coz the dz is my home, my family...

Does your "family" know where you live and come visit you or do you just have to go to their place? See how many of them show up over the next six weeks without you inviting them.

Mine does! They're the ones who keep telling me to wait and won't let me on the manifest. >:( ;)

  10. Hey Mark, for Canada, you're okay with you "B" CoP on a CReW jump. My home DZ is a regular kennel for the CReW dogs. Btw. those of us in Alberta have been having spectacular weather for jumping. :) Almost midnight and it's +10! (For the benighted Americans, that's 50ºF). Not bad for mid-November in Alberta!

  11. You guys need my Orthopædic Surgeon. He hasn't got a clue about sky-diving and its risks. (He's a tennis player.) While assessing the hamstring tear I got when I dislocated my shoulder, he told me I should be trying to do all the things I normally do to see what doesn't work properly. I asked: Does that include skydiving? His reply-if that's what you normally do, you should try it! :)

  12. Sounds like some of you guys are at the wrong DZ. I've been out of action since late July from a dislocation on my right shoulder. The only negative comment I get when I show up is"NO! you can't go up on a load. Wait 'til it is healed up." Which is probably good advice. :) My question for the friends of surgery out there is: I have a big tear in my triceps which has scarred through to the skin. Anyone know of anyone who does a great job on muscle repair?

  13. Not sure if it helps, but as a one-eyed flyer, the tendency to flare early is really common with altered depth perception. I got really good at rolling in my landings until I figured out the correct picture. If your vision is now better than before, it sounds like you need to change your picture of when to flare. You were likely focusing in with a squint to see the big picture; now, you're seeing it for real and it is too late.

  14. If you are determined, you can do it. My Kung-fu teacher always said: that'll cost you a hundred pushups. NOW! There is no such thing as "I can't do that. The correct answer is "I haven't figured out how to do that yet Sifu (followed by a deep bow). We have one guy at a DZ close to me who was severely injured back in about 1991 when he got wrapped and knocked unconscious training for 4-ways for Nationals. He suffered some pretty severe brain damage, but got back in a plane to jump again. I just saw him jump about three weeks ago. Large, soft, fluffy easy-opening canopy AND a new boyfriend and you should be okay. Trust the senior coaches at your DZ and don't jump before they want you to. Do your first few jumps with a radio.

  15. Blind John fleming a blind jumper says: "Flare when you hear the crickets"
If you have winters like we do in Canada, The crickets fly south, so what I do is look from side to side as I come in, pretend I'm getting off an escalator, start to flare when I think I should, which is usually a bit early, hold it, wait until I think it is too late and then flare and stab. Just don't come in with your knees locked, and, be prepared to run it out. After about 100 PLFs, I can now land. :)

  16. The one-eyed dentist says: get a spare flipper if you're too vain to jump without the teeth. Or, get a couple of wrought-wire clasps added to it.

  17. Great response for me posting a couple of years ahead of time. I'm also a right-eyed jumper, and some peple just don't catch on why I want to be to their left on the wing. i.e. side-by-side linked, me to the inside.:). We'd make a great team for a two-way.

  18. First question-how many jumps do you have now? I finally started seeing my landings at just over 100 jumps-at 125 jumps I started getting more aggresive, coming in on front risers-I don't look ahead; I rotate my vision from side to side as I set up, and it gives me better "faux" depth perception. This is on an 8yr old PD210, so no ZP fabric. I'm on the look-out for a Silhouette190-I jumped one in Germany and loved the response-better landings with a smaller canopy. I used to joke that I was practicing my PLFs, and now tht I've done 100 of them, I can practice more normal landings;).

Thanks for doing my job. I'm the one who usually tells people that if they can spell, they can find material with search engines.

  20. Try gentle passive stretches with a rolled-up towel cross-wise under your back; gradually increase the height of the towel. Just lie there and let your body stretch-if you force it you will hurt yourself. If you have access to a gym with a sauna steam room or Jacuzzi, warm up first, then just lie with the towel under the part you need to stretch.

  21. If you get to western Canada, Edmonton Skydive had a quadriplegic jumper who got pied a couple of years ago for his 100th jump. www.edmontonskydive.com and follow links for Dave McCullough or for Bernie Cyr. They might know someone in your area.
