  1. shit, I knew it... I'll be out loading the car Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  2. are you sure he wasn't a zombie? cause if he was, this might be the first report and we've all seen this before in the movies.. people are seeing them and reporting them and noone listens until it's too late... I don't know about you, but I'm loading my car to be on the safe side... nothing worse than a damn brain eating zombie [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  3. honestly it has to do with the feel of the knife on the stone... I always make sure to go back and forth, assuring that there is a microscopic "x" of scratches in the edge instead of a microscopic saw tooth edge... I always finish up with a ceramic stick to smooth out the edge and it works for me. 4. the way I figure it, there are two kinds of people in this world, the people who have a zombie plan and the people who don't have a zombie plan (I call them bait). what are your plans for when the zombies take over and start eating everyone? I myself plan to load up a car with guns, food and gas and head north, since zombies are cold blooded, they will turn into undeadsicles... what's your plan? 5. anyone here a fan of red vs. blue? I'm sure that there are some Halo fanatics about... check out www.roosterteeth.com and view some of their online series, even if you're not a big Halo fan, the humor and cinematography is fabulous... for those of you who don't know, it's a series filmed entirely within the video game... genius. I've bought the first 4 seasons on dvd and am planning on having a screening at the dropzone when the weather clears up... if you haven't seen it, you really ought to check them out. 6. we had a discussion about this the other day at the bar when one guy was talking about his father having his arm torn off by a hay baler... said that's the way he would have wanted to go.. I turned to my friend and told him that it was his job to punch anyone in the face who said that about me unless I went out at 105 suffocated under a pile of naked 18 year old asian girls.. 7. don't worry, it's normal, cross-ports fray... it's only 3 squares in... if it bothers you, keep an eye on it and periodically have a rigger look at it... I've seen a hundred just like that... it'll be fine. Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  8. you can definitely sew on your own jumpsuit.. don't be freaked out that it's a jumpsuit, it's just clothing! it does happen to go 120 mph so you have to use good thread. what you need is type 69 bonded nylon E thread... you can search for it and buy it on line or buy a roll from your local rigger... you'll need a larger needle for your home machine. go to a sewing machine store and ask for a size 17 or 18 needle that will fit your machine and then look at how the rest of the suit is sewed and copy those comventions... be sure to back stitch at the end of your stitch lines or over sew and you should be okay. 9. the age doesn't matter, the number of jumps does... at 450 jumps you're right about ready for a new lineset... and besides, better safe than sorry, if you're buying a new (to you) canopy, go ahead and spend the extra 150 bucks and get a new lineset and start off on the right foot.. my 2 cents Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  10. get a machine and a ton of scrap material and start sewing! that's about it...you need stick time so to speak. start by sticking two pieces of fabric together with a home machine and get some of the basics and then find a rigger with some scrap and get a pile of cordura and parapack and start sticking that together, then ask questions... I know we throw away 50 pounds of scrap a week and will happily give you a garbage bag if you ask for it... then look into getting a lightweight industrial such as the Consew 230 which is an industry standard among riggers. this is how I learned to sew and now I do it for a living... once you get the basics down, you'd be surprised how quickly you can pick up the more complex tricks of the trade. 11. I've used army surplus helmet bags for years and they work just fine, para-gear and aero store have some nice ones that are specific for skydiving helmets, we've played with the idea of making a line of custom fitted bags for skydiving helmets, but aren't sure if there is a large enough market for them. www.velocitysportswear.com [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  12. just my 2 cents.. kolla stated that the industry would like to see the truck dealers making 2% over wholesale go the way of the do do.... wtf... anytime I can find someone who will charge 2% over wholesale, he just got all of my business... if I can buy the same product for less money and he can stay in business doing that.... what in the hell is wrong with that? I may truly be missing the point here... we hope that dealers that charge small markups go away so that dealers who charge larger markups can make more sales will prosper since they have no competition... oh yeah... great point.. helping the skydivers out here.... I'm sure that this will be a boon to the skydiver.. having dealt with declining customer service from PD in the last several years and increading customer service from Icarus and Hiper... you don't have to be a prophet to predict whose products I will be buying, recommending and selling in the future.. 13. if it's not broke, don't fix it... the straight or curved pin, system dependant have done well... here's my rule on changes... if the change will not SIGNIFICANTLY improve the system... it's not worth the effort... the flex pin will work, but it causes more and different problems... the cables will wear faster than stainless steel... that's just a fact... it's important to avoid jumping on a band wagon because a few people are doing something, a while ago we had a bunch of mexican skydivers come through and they all had 2 closing loops... WTF?!?!?!? they'd but the pin through both... I asked them and they all swore that it cured premature deployments because if one broke the other one was there... I explained that this was voodoo hoodoo bullshit and if they were to just maintain one closing loop it wasn't an issue... they all laughed at my lack of knowledge and continued with their two closing loops... whatever, if it makes you feel better change, but you've got to ask yourself, where is the empirical evidence that this change will significantly improve the system... just my thoughts Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  14. I'm a big fan of .308 here in Texas there isn't anything big enough for me to worry about needing serious knock down... M118 is good stuff when you can get it... I reload my own to spec and match or exceed the M118 performance.... personally if I was hunting anything larger than a whitetail I'd start with a 7 mag, perhaps think about a 300 win mag... I had a 458 mag for a while that I sold due to the fact that it was just overkill here in Texas and everyone made fun of me for overcompensating for something (the rumors are not true, I can supply references on request ) , but I could load some magic for it that would really reach out and touch things .... I recently shot a 338 lapua (8.6x70 for those not familiar with it, conceived in Finland for sniping to bridge the gap between 300 mag and .50 cal) shot is at 1000... now that is the shit... I'm a convert and am thinking about importing some moose here to Texas to justify buying one, or perhaps a tyranosaurus or two [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  15. I've got several friends in law enforcement here in Texas mostly in Dallas and Houston... they have both commented on the amount of people they've arrested for violent crimes as well as general drug related activities and burglaries that are from Louisiana and came over after the hurricanes and just stayed... drug sales, especially crack and meth is way up or seemingly more prevalent on the streets of Dallas... as is prostitution... a large influx of working girls came with the evacuees... just observations. 16. for those who care, Lee Hardesty is back in Dallas... he survived his solo Baffin trip... again... third one. Anyway, he said that that weather was god awful and he spent a lot of time in a tent snowed in, he got a few jumps and busted some more cherries in the Arctic... I believe he has probably opened more sites on Baffin than anyone else in the community. he said specifically he jumped the helmet this time, he'd been planning it for around 6 years. he told me he has some amazing video of a jump where the launch point crumbled and he fell off and was the most scared he'd ever been in his life... then on landing the ground winds had picked up to around 70 mph! he says he has some pretty humorous footage of him being drug for quite a ways... L-bars on his alpine rig... anyway, I'm sure that once he decompresses, we'll work something up with the video and get it out to the masses... he did some preliminary planning with a inuit local guide on trying to set up future planned trips with paying guests... I'm sure that he'll keep all informed as that progresses... Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  17. still no word from Lee... hopefully, he is still alive and getting some decent footage, if I hear anything I'll let everyone know what's up... if anyone hears anything pertaining to him from another group, please post it here.. Lee isn't real good about letting others know what he's doing :-) Tom www.applieddeceleration.com [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  18. yep he went solo... just got some pm's that apparently there are a couple of other groups in the area... makes me feel a bit better that if he gets hurt someone may actually find his body... and more importantly the 2 hi-def expensive ass video cameras that he took with him... oooh and the shotgun, it was nice ;-) [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  19. Hey all, just to update those who know about Lee's trip. He's in the Baffin Islands. He left Texas on April 26th and is scheduled to fly back on 10 June. He's been gone now for about a month so I'm assuming that he's out there jumping and climbing and hoping that he's not dead. He actually took video cameras with him this trip and may get some usable footage this time. (if he makes it back again that is) for those of you who don't know the background on this post... my partner Lee hardesty (of turkey boogie wall rescue fame) went to the baffin islands solo (this is his 3rd solo trip). no helicopter, no snow mobile, no support, no sat phone, no nothing... just Lee and a 200 pound sled and some second hand skis and a bunch of rope and a rig. oh yeah and a mossberg 590 3.5 inch magnum shotgun with custom big game slugs to keep the polar bears from eating him. I've not heard from him since he got on the plane and probably won't until he calls sometime after he misses his return flight and needs me to reroute his travel... I know a lot of people here know what he's up to and are probably wondering what his status is and will keep ya'll informed if I hear anything. 20. I pack at a medium sized dropzone and I've noticed that the majority of jumpers do not pack for themselves due to a higher than average per capita income (that is my theory)... many do know how to pack their own but choose to use a packer due to the fact that packing in work and they're out to have fun, I don't have a problem with this, it keeps me in beer... I do have a problem with skydivers that can not, meaning they don't know how to pack their own parachute. The A license requirements state that you must be able to pack your own... that's pretty cut and dried to me... I believe that yearly every skydiver should have to demonstrate this capability or surrender whatever license they have and go through AFF again... if you have to be able to read an eye test chart or something to keep your driver's license and you can't do it, they take your license away until you can meet the basic requirements.... it is just absolutely unfathomable to me that people will strap a majic backpack on and jump out of a plane not having the slightest clue as to what is in it or how it works... I don't know how many times I've had to hook up new mains for people with hundreds or thousands of jumps who can't put a canopy on risers or for that matter can't even hook up a three ring.... come on people if you can't pack... ask someone and learn how to... if your packer is swamped and can't get you on a load, don't bitch and moan, pack it yourself and get on the plane... be the master of your own destiny... if your packer slams you, don't bitch and moan... pack it yourself so you can make it open the way you want it to... what ever happened to the self-sufficient american attitude? I know a lot out there can pack for themselves so don't reply with 100 posts of "I can pack for myself" if this applies to you, take it as a piece of advise from someone who knows what really happens when you pull out the magic bean and the pretty canopy comes out... learn how your gear works, learn to inspect it, learn how to pack it.. don't depend on someone else , don't be in a position of having to count on someone else... be the master of your own faith... just my .02 cents. 21. on the nose of the dual keel there are two pieces of type 4 tape located on either side of the nose... question is what to do with them... it does not have a nose slider like a single keel... also not really clear on how to stow the lines, the dual keel has all of the outside lines on the front riser and all of the keel lines on the rear riser, is this normal? we did not set this canopy up.. have experience with the single keel, but the dual keel has it's own intricasies. Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  22. not sure, depends on Lee and the winds... he wants to get both the dual keel and the single keep in the air at the same time for a fomation picture, he likes the dual keep a lot and will probably be jumping it whenever the winds permit, he's not loading it much [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  23. hey all, hope someone can help, we're looking for the manuals for both the single and dual keel paradactyls... hopefully someone has them in a dusty old box somewhere... my partner has both and jumped his dual keel this weekend... just thought it would be nice to actually have the manual instead of making it up as he packed it.. Tom [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  24. Oh my God... the answer is SOOO simple.. just start concentrating on doing naked jumps with 18 year old girls just getting into the sport, it's guaranteed to get that original fire back into you... trust me on this.. be sure to post videos for the rest of us cialis aged skydivers :-) [email protected] www.velocitysportswear.com What's YOUR Zombie Plan?
  25. come on guys... I can't believe that this thing is still alive.. let's sum this up in a few sentences... as a rigger you are REQUIRED to MAINTAIN THE SYSTEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MANUFACTURERS (in this case Sunpath) RECOMMENDATIONS... the manufacturer states that in this case and only this case, the RSL is STANDARD equipment and RECOMMENDS that the RSL not be REMOVED-- you can still DISCONNECT the RSL (that is what the snap shackle is designed for) if the manufacturer recommends that you not remove an item from their rig, you are required to adhere to their guidance... it's pretty much that simple... trust me on this, I've been through this nut roll specifically. if you want a javelin, fine, great rig, but it's going to have an RSL on it, if you don't want an RSL attached to your rig, fine... buy another brand that doesn't recommend that the RSL not be removed or offers it as an OPTION, not as STANDARD equipment... if you remove the RSL on a javelin, please be warned that you may be called to the carpet by your friendly local FSDO for making an alteration to the TSO'd components of the system... I know for a FACT that when the FSDO calls Sunpath with this question, that is what they will say... as stated previously, I've been through this... trust me on this, I'm not bullshitting you here. We were specifically told by the FSDO that if he found a rig that we had removed the RSL from he would take great joy in violating the rigger in question.
