  1. The delay really depends on the object , winds and LZ
  2. U rawk gurl ! BASE is such an adventure.
  3. Yo, Check out Tom A's Spring Death Camp (it's only a few posts down). He's taking applications. Give him a call and see what he thinks. If your jump #'s are true any of the FJC's will take you.
  4. Check out www.flybirdman.com . In the learning center is a section on aircraft exits. For the Caravan they recommend a 4 count for adequate separation.
  5. Forget all that letter writing and video watching. Just bring your family or loved ones out and let them watch you do a jump. Show them your gear and explain to them how it all works. At least for me, the more my folks understand about the sport, the less they worry. My Mom is always on the lookout for new exit points.
  6. If your going to be doing alot of slider down work def get bottom skin inlets and big grab toggles. These things alone can save your life. I started out on a pin rig and really see no advantages to velcro, but that's just me. Have fun and welcome to the party.
  7. Martin, Per & Mik I should be able to find Potash by the time you guys come back for another US tour. My stash bag still smells like the campfire. Mike2
  8. The KOA kampground 4 miles North of the bridge is the cheapest and they have a heated pool ! Unpacked Ray may be renting out rooms, if not, def check out one of his poker games.
  9. Isn't hang gliding allowed in Yosemite ? Why don't we get organized like those guys. Site ratings , jumper proficiency ratings , waivers and a 3rd party liability insurance policy ? Wouldn't the NPS then recognize us as a legitimate group ?
  10. Do you think a 40 mph wind would do it ? Your right, it would come down to wingloading. Someone very tall, skinny and light with say the sugarglider.
  11. Yes, I was referring to wingsuit BASE as meeting the criteria for the take off from the ground part. But that just gave me an idea for a new type of flight. It would require a unique site . Say 1000' cliff that ran for a good ways, like a laminar coastal site. Where a wingsuit could be launched into the lift and then flown parallel to the ridge. Like hang gliding, in a wingsuit.
  12. That's already been done, they call it wingsuit BASE.
  13. Guess 1. Wheels of some sort ( probably retractable like landing gear ) Guess 2. Modified Dainese airbag suit
  14. Dear Mr. Hookitt Could you please explain how to double stow the primary stow ? and also for the direct slider control how are you attaching the rubber bands to the inner C lines ( larkshead, fingertrap) ? Thank you for your help.
  15. I've seen this before. When the air is stable it will layer like a cake. Layers don't like to mix, but you will find some shear turbulence between them. As your descending from one layer to the next your canopy could experience turbulence and a loss of airspeed. Say your in one layer with a 10 mph headwind and drop into the next layer with 0 wind ( this is called gradient, which just means change ). Your canopy will drop , due to the loss of airspeed and try to regain it's airspeed. It could stall if your angle of attack is too high (ie. too much brake. Brake travel controls A of A ) which is why it's important to be flying at trim when descending through. The additional speed and brake travel will help with recovery. You'll usually find stable air early morning, depending on the pressure and weather systems. Once the sun heats things up the layers will mix out . Then again in the evening things will cool down and layer .The whole process starts again with the sun.
  16. Best 2 pin on the market - Gargoyle by Morpheus Technologies - look at the design and you'll see why Best canopy on the market - whatever you feel like jumping at the time
  17. Haven't tried it yet, but I've heard you grab both toggles- bury them fast (don't let canopy stall), then let one all the way up while keeping the other one down.
  18. Rob and Kathy are great and are super nice to deal with. I'm just curious as to what the jumping population is doing out there.
  19. If you fly Troll MDV for terminal, how are you packing ? with what slider and how are your openings?

    Yosemite

There's an interesting article in the Feb. Hang Gliding and Paragliding mag ( ushga.org). It's about 6 paraglider pilots who were caught kiting ( flying the wing overhead while standing on the ground ) their paragliders in Tuolumne Meadows. Originally charged a Class B Federal Misdemeanor for "operating and use of an aircraft in a National Park" their gear was confiscated for evidence as well. Maximum sentence $5000 and 6 months in jail. After repeated calls the Yosemite prosecutor offered a deal of a $2000 fine and a years probation. One of the six pilots did a internet search and found out that in 2000 a paraglider pilot had flown from North Dome in Yosemite and had an hour long flight landing in Wawona. His wing was held as evidence , he was cited and given a court appearance the next day. He was fined $500 and his gear returned. Armed with this precedent one of the members called the prosecutor again and pointed out this discrepency. After a few more calls the fine was negotiated down to $300. 10 days later at the court hearing all members plead guilty, were fined $300 and given a year's non-reporting court probation.
  21. I don't know about you guys, but after seeing girlfalldowns new avatar, I'm going to start jumping because the chicks dig it.
  22. This idea was just for fun . It does describe paragliding , BASE and ground launching sports all in one . On another note: does anyone know where the line is drawn between what constitutes a paraglider from say a skydiving parachute, BASE or ground launching canopy ?
  23. I meant "foot launch" sorry to confuse the two.
  24. ...but there's no freefall if you decide to ground launch in my sport .
  25. In this sport the participant " climbs or hikes " with a ram air wing system . Upon finding or arriving at a suitable launch site , participant then chooses preferred method of launch . Launches and subsequently becomes a ram air wing pilot , flying the system safely to the ground below .
