  1. So I'm excited and just want to share... Today I completed my first dual instruction flight... and am 1.3 hours closer to the 40 hours (min) required to get my PPL... the most nervous part for me was landing... but I'm definitely excited at the chance to do it all again... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  2. Nothing... but my wife... who's cuddling with me in bed also wearing nothing... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  3. Wait does that mean I should take down my smugmug page? or because I share it with my wife... is it ok? I just want to be in the right here... I mean really it costs me money to have it up... so if it's not the right thing to do to have it up then I can take it down... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  4. I took a few days off last week, and had the day off yesterday... but I'm back in the office now... However I think I'll have Thursday afternoon off and I Friday is a Holiday so we've got that day off as well... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  5. I have a Bev suit Camera suit with booties (that started out as a RW suit and was later converted...) It's a really well made suit and I do like it for large formation video... I also have a camera jacket/freefly pants combination from Tonysuits that I prefer for tandems (although I'm in the process of replacing the camera Jacket with one from Bev) at my Tonysuit jacket has always felt too big/loose... I'll let you know how I like my Bev Suit Camera/Freefly Jacket... Scott Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  6. Your fear is by no means irrational... Todays modern equipment is very reliable and generally works as expected/planned. (I have almost 1000 jumps since my last and so far only cutaway was on jump 38... my wife has almost 800 jumps and only has one cutaway...) However if it was fullproof then there would be no reason to have a secondary parachute available as a backup. Whereas we do carry one... just in case the first one doesn't open properly or something else goes amiss. Having said that most of the injurys or death today occur under good canopys and involve pilot error... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  7. Actually the weather in Ohio wasn't bad at all... we got a dusting overnight before Christmas and then just a bit more on Christmas day but that was about it... we didn't really have much trouble with snow until we were about back to Southern MD... where the roads got bad quickly... All and all our trip wasn't to bad although it was very short since Beth only just started working again just over a month ago... Which is why we're already back home... otherwise we probably would have stayed through new years and hung out with skydivers... I hope you guys had a good holiday as well... 8. I want to go on record as an ardent fan of the traction control on my V6 4WD RAV4... On our way back to Southern MD (from Ohio) this afternoon (where we've been getting some substantial snow showers all day...) we nearly got into an accident after a pickup truck 100 yards ahead of us lost control and spun into the lane in front of us on a 4 lane divided highway (not interstate)... now being faced with a pickup truck directly in front facing us (and a car in the lane to my right moving the same speed as we were... I opted to first attempt to stop but when that didn't seem to be likely I opted to take the median/inside path... thankfully our little rav4 went in the directions I pointed it and we were able to completely avoid the pickup truck (partly because he moved slightly and partly because of the route I chose to take...) so although I didn't feel like I was able to stop effectively (despite the ABS) I was able to avert an accident and maintain directional control of the SUV to find a path around the vehicle we suddenly had in front of us... and mind you I have had some practice in controlled environments in the snow and have in general found that it doesn't misbehave but I was glad to see it actually work when it actually counted... finally FWIW we probably wouldn't have been out if we hadn't have been returning from Ohio where we celebrated Christmas with my family and we definitely stayed home once we were safely there... edited to add: I'm not holding to the skill part in the subject very hard...as I think I owe it mostly to the traction control and luck... 9. I have a few Old family photos (from my dad's side) on my smugmug site... Linked below. http://www.scottgunstills.com/Family/Old-Famly-Photos/6252877_oYHbb Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  10. Andy put it well... I remember when I first started exploring other dropzones after starting my skydiving life at an Atlanta dz that wasn't well like in the ATL area... but no one (Andy included) derided me for it... they just invited me to jump and have fun... I miss the ATL crowd... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  11. How do you know that the kids didn't earn the money... suppose the kids work for their parents... and subsiquently help earn the money that their parents saved and passed on... one of the things that kind of bothers me is paying taxes on the sale/purchase of used items... if someone has already paid taxes on a used car that I want to buy from them (when they purchased it new 5 years ago) then I shouldn't be required to pay taxes on it again... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  12. All FAA Certs are plastic now... I've also read recently that the FAA is proposing a Pilot Photo Certificatewhich has raised concerns regarding pilot training among other things... also interesting... the AOPA did respond to the multiple news articles regarding the outdated registration and the link to security... http://www.aopa.org/advocacy/articles/2010/101210out_of_date_records_no_security_threat.html to be honest... the security concerns cited in the original article really have little to do with outdated registration... in fact the FAA registration in all three of the airplanes mentioned were all valid... (except for the one seized in Venezuela which was a forgery of a valid registration...) Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  13. Y'all should come to the St Mary's airport (2W6) They used to have a dropzone there and everything... Of course I say this in jest as if I understand the manner in which the previous dz departed I don't think they'd want a dz back... do keep us posted regarding the relocation... as although we didn't make it out there all to often this year (the move and team training got in the way)... we should be out more next year... and I agree it is sad to see a former dz/airport completely disappear... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  14. Sheesh, Nobody listens to me... The AIRPORT that was at that location doesn't appear to be an airport any longer... So it's irrelevant if the former airstrip is too close to Orange... it doesn't exist... Edited to add: Here is what is going on at the Former Hartwood Dropzone... You don't have to read much... it's in the first paragraph of the second page... http://www.co.stafford.va.us/bos/mar0210/17.pdf Suffice to say this is no longer viable as an airport (or probably a dz for that matter... considering homeland security appears to be using it...) Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  15. Ever consider re-opening this place? http://www.dropzone.com/dropzone/Detailed/923.shtml It looks as though this former airstrip is now a drag strip... or at least no longer an airstrip... http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=38.4845694,-77.6127653&ie=UTF8&ll=38.48398,-77.613301&spn=0.010683,0.019076&t=h&z=16 Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  16. Congrats on passing your Quals... for those in grad school if you haven't seen it before I highly recommend the comic strip PHD (as in piled higher and deeper) I really enjoyed it while I was in school... I highly recommend it... http://www.phdcomics.com/ Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  17. I only have 2 profile pictures on facebook... and honestly neither of them are too bad... in one of them I'm hanging on the side of an airplane (about to exit on an AFF Cat A) and the other is a picture of me on the top of Sandia Peak in New Mexico... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  18. My family has a summer cottage on the eastern coast of lake michigan... it's almost completely uninsulated and is only heated by a fireplace in the main room of the house along with space heaters... It gets quite cold in the winter but the cottage is designed such that all the water can be either blown out or drained out of the system to preven the pipes from freezing in the winter. Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
  19. If the apartment complex is large enough then it might be ok to turn off the electricity but your idea is better... the temperature doesn't have to be very high and even 45-50 deg is more then enough to prevent pipes from freezing... and will substantially reduce the chance of pipes freezing... They can reduce their electrical footprint by unplugging appliances while they're gone... but honestly the 10-15 dollars they might save by turning off the electric for a month is not worth the potential costs associated with repairing frozen pipes... 22. Saint Nicholas of Myra was a real person who lived in the 4th century. So he *was* real. I was going to say the same thing... in fact St Nicholas and I share a birthday... mind you seperated by in excess of 1600 years... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...

  24. so... not to throw too much gasoline on the fire already started but all variants of Sony Memory sticks appear to have 10 pins... whereas SD cards appear to have 8 pins... so what everyone is saying is that its not a micro SD card it is however a memory stick micro card... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Stick#Memory_Stick_Micro_.28M2.29 Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
