  5. Meet #2 is complete 41 competitors and $1,000 cash and about $100 in jumps from Zhills handed out. 11 pro and 29 amatuer. We paid out the top 5 slots. It was quite a challenging meet. Winds went from a 5mph cross wind, to a slight downwind, back to the crosswind, to a headwind. there were 3 seperate courses which made setups challenging for pro and amatuers alike. Scores for the meet and cumulative for the league members so far are up on the FLCPA site. http://www.cpafl.org/ Remember the overall amatuer champ is getting a free ride to nationals(flight, hotel, jumps, reg) and 2nd gets his registration and jumps covered. See you guys next month in lake wales!! ************ Watch out for planters.
  6. Aggie Dave? you out there? I wouldn't worry about your league yet, it won't start til your at the end of competing here in Florida with us'-) ************ Watch out for planters.
  7. There will be 5 meets in the season. If you attend all 5, your standing is calculated using your best 4 meets. The worst one is dropped. If you only attend 4, well those are your best 4 meets! If you do 3 or less, you'll still get scored if your a league member, but you'll have a 0 in the 4th spot. ************ Watch out for planters.

  9. Hello All, The 2009 Florida Canopy Piloting season is starting in January. The league has grown over the last 5 years through the hard work of of its members, dropzones, and volunteer Judges. This season we're looking for new Judges! The meet schedule is listed below. If your available on a few of these dates, and would like to come join the group, let me know! The group that comes out to these meets are quite close and we are all there for the same thing, learning, competition, and friendship. Though this isn't a job thats going to pay your car bill, we do our best to take care of your expenses(travel, food, lodging, cocktails, back rubs, etc). We'll teach you the rules, safety, and all you need to know. Just bring an able body and some common sense. Over the course of a few meets we can get you all you need to know to get you your USPA judges rating. We have 3 Nationally rated judges in the league who can give you your test and sign off your rating when your ready! Those interested or simply want more information, email me at [email protected] or call 386-490-0044 If your looking for a way to pay it forward... here it is!!! ************ Watch out for planters.
  10. Ian got yelled at for trying to hijack the thread HA HA ************ Watch out for planters.
  11. they are a real dropzone. located at Wauchula airport. operate a 182. very big airport with plenty of open land. They go and do beach jumps from time to time as well. Paul is the owner and Charlie is their pilot. Nice folks. They jump on the weekends. I would give them a ring when you want to come out, so you can find out if they are going to the beach or jumping at the airport. ************ Watch out for planters.
  12. My guess would be that since they are offering you the gear for FREE, they are requesting the use of the staff packers. Thats still pretty damn cheap! ************ Watch out for planters.
  13. Mike: "Whats that you've got there in your hand" Girl: "The results from my Gynecologist, their positive" Mike: "Cool, see you later!" ************ Watch out for planters.

  17. Early 2006 I went from Vectran to 500 HMA on my Velocities. Early 07 I switched to PD's 300 HMA when they began offering it for competition use. 95% of my jumps are subtermanial. I will probably switch back to 500 HMA if I ever find a love for freefall again. ************ Watch out for planters.
  18. 4 years ago that probably would have been the overwelming majority. You actually can get a velocity to perform like this. Take a look at some footage from of Fastrax or PDFT. Bring a canopy to its theoretical max speed and then push it "beyond" that speed at a timed moment, and it will react differently in its recovery. It's pretty difficult to write a book that catches all of this, as Ian said, it is constantly growing and we are learning new things. We're all still learning whats possible. This is a great example, and I agree with you 100%. The next comments aren't pointed at "you". I want to use your example to make a point to the group so we can all maybe adjust our thinking on how we discuss wingloading, "underloading" and "recomended" wingloadings. I'lll bring back the example of the Katana. at a loading of 1.4. you may be bored, but another jumper may be completely content. At 1.4 it meets his needs, given his experience, skill level, home dz altitude, and desire and assumption of risk. Feeding information to that other jumper that that the KA is boring at 1.4 and will perform better doesn't do him any service. Ficus, I think we're on the same page, but many others out there are not. Many believe that so called"underloading" makes a canopy unstable, or portray negative flight, landing or opening characteristics. And many jumper out there are scared of underloading their canopy, so they feel they NEED a smaller one or they are in danger! This is the mentality that needs to be dispelled. maybe it's not yours, but it's a pretty popular one out there that we as a group need to take responsibility to end. Well I'm off to the dz to learn, see you guys! ************ Watch out for planters.
  19. Learning to swoop with minimal rear riser or toggle input in order to level out your canopy should be the primary goal when learning to swoop. EVERY canopy that is out there these days recovers on its own. From a Navigator at .8, a Jedei at 1.7, Katana at 2.2 or a Velocity at 2.9 they all have a natural tendacy to recover from a dive. The difference is the pilot underneath the canopy. I need to adjust my turn style, learn how the new canopy generates(and looses) speed, and most importantly at what altitude to begin a speed building manuver. The canopy doesn't dive forever, you probably just started, or better yet, ended your turn too low. Underloading- Is a word that should be stricken from peoples vocabulary. A Katana at 1.4 is not underloaded. A Velocity at 1.9 is not underloaded. The canopy will open fly and land just as it was designed. It just may not be as fast as YOU would like. Just as there is no optimal wingloading- There is just personal preference. and it differs from one pilot to the next. Treating an "optimal" wingloading provided to you by one of your friends as gospel isn't going to help you out. ************ Watch out for planters.
  20. I was considering making a pilgrimage 1/2 way around the world to meet the Dalai Lama. Then it was explained that my life would be truely changed by going to Nebraska to gaze upon and learn from Jimmy Coiner. ************ Watch out for planters.
  21. aren't these guys the US Team http://www.omniskore.com/comp/2007/usnats/cf/2way/602.asp I don't even see the team your referring to on the US Nationals score sheet?http://www.omniskore.com/comp/2007/usnats/cf/2way/cf2way.asp ************ Watch out for planters.
  22. I've had the opportunity to meet Keith a handful of time at competitions in Colorado and in Perris during my random visits. Keith portrayed a unique passion and intensity for our sport. It was in his eyes. You only had to look at him once to see he lived in that world so many of us do. I can only assume he shared this same intensity for the love of everything else in his life. Sincere condolences to his immediate family and friends. Blue ones Keith...... ************ Watch out for planters.
  23. Just to clarify to everyone, I am assuming you are referring to US Canopy piloting nats in Colorado, not Eloy Nationals. yeah, I got $62 a day after taxes and all the crazy fees. They aren't getting any cheaper either, i went back today and the best I found was $75. The hotels are outragious as well. All the hotels that used to be $100 a night are now $200-250 and their filling up quick. The Radisson is not honoring the skydiver rate that was advertised at $75 per night. they want $205. And you guys thought Wildwood nationals was expensive...... ************ Watch out for planters.
  24. Like some others have said, picking a parachute is a little dificult to do for someone else. Unless you know exactly what size, model, and colors he would want, it might be tough to just show up with a parachute. But there are a few creative ways you can work around that and still make him a happy camper. Here's a couple ideas- *Buy him a bunch of jump tickets or put money on his account at the dz. Skydivers love free jumps. *If there is a gear store at the dz, put credit on his account for gear rental, and stuff. He will be buying plenty of accessories and things from them What dz does he jump at? Some gear stores have extensive rental/demo programs so he can try different models to decide what HE likes before he buys. ************ Watch out for planters.
  25. Nicely put Tom. Parachutes are pretty fun. The more I've learned about them, their construction, aerodynamics, why they do what they do, etc; the more I've been able to appreciate our sport and how amazing it truely is. ************ Watch out for planters.
