  3. *** I remember rumors of the "freebag stripping" but I think it was a military jump or something like that. Its not coming up on any major search of the Fatalities DB's or my old issues of Parachutist. It was a member of the military, thats why you can't find anything on it. Jumper had a problem with his main and after cutaway deployed his reserve. the pilot chute and freebag left and the reserve stayed in the container.Luckly he has a lot of experence and didn't panic. he got the reserve out of the container and it recieved damage on opening. He was able to land the reserve with some bruises but nothing major. again military; I beleave it was about 96-97. instructor doing AFF had a spinning mal. cut away, bag lock until impact. records will not be released. again- jumper on ramp of C130 caught ripcord on something.pilot chute and freebag left with reserve about a sec. behind.(ouch) no damage to reserve or jumper.I had just packed the reserve so I know there was nothing wrong with the free bag it just stripped, this happened in about 2000 freebag and pilot chute were never found. 5. I agree with Mel and Chuck 100%. I do not think that even if you know a rig backwards and forwards that you should work on it without the manufactures instructions. I can't think of too many people that know racers as well as I do, but I still have the manual out when I'm working on one (even mine). To say that you work on a rig without them is nothing to be proud of. It's carless. Chuck: You are not just a master rigger. being a master is something to be very proud of. 6. I agree with Rob....This thread should end. Rob: When I got my first SST in 1976 it had a floating loop not a quick loop but more like the loop on a softie sewn all the way across and routed in a channel in the hat. I like the quick loop better. Mike Gainey Master Rigger DPRE
  7. ***What other rigs besides the Racer or Reflex can the reserve closing loop(s) be tightened without breaking the seal? any rig on the market today can have their reserve closing loops tightened without breaking the seal and I will not go into how to do this because it is so very dangerous. As far as someone over tightening a quick loop on a racer or reflex goes: if it is something that the rigger has no control over then he cannot be held responsible (this is tried and proven in 1997) when I teach people to be riggers the first rig they pack on their own is a racer with a cypres and a 181-mz reserve (zp top skin) when they are done they ask me what is so hard about packing a racer. If your rigger cannot pack a racer or is reluctant to pack a racer then find your self another rigger. there are riggers that will show your rigger how to pack a racer with ease and if he does not want to take the time to learn then he may not want to take the time to do things that should be done to any rig. Mike and Peter: I do not understand why you have to defend the racer, all anyone has to do is check it's record and it will speak for it self. Any rigger that wishes to learn how to pack a racer and see for them selves just how easy and simple it is then feel free to contact me and I will be happy to teach you. 8. Terry: I believe the company is Keystone that you are looking for. Mel has the info on them. Mike: I know where there is a 7-33 0n a table, but the guy wants about 2,500 for it. If you are interested send me an E-mail. I will be coming your way at the end of the month and could bring it to you. The ones on E-bay are 7-33 knock offs. their ad use to say that the 7-33 parts where interchangeable but they changed it. Mike Gainey Master Rigger DPRE
  9. First of all, I'm sorry for what you are going through. you need to contact the DZO that sold you the rig and tell him that you would like your money back. If he refuses to give you a refund, then you can call 1-800-FAA-SURE. you do not have to give your name if you do not wish to,but the FAA will respond. If the rigger who did the mod's did not do any paper work on the rig then it will be your word against his. As in many cases the DZO may not be aware that the rig was unairworthy.A lot of DZO's rely on what their riggers tell them. All riggers are not bad. most will do more than they are ask to do without charging you, but as in anything else we do have our 10%. find yourself a rigger who you trust and stay with him.
