    First BASE jump

Is he an adult and does he have a brain? IT IS UP TO HIM!!!!!!!!!!!! He's the guy that needs to make the decisions. He is the one who decides whether or not he wants to heed advice or just treat it with disdain. It is NOT up to others to make those decisions for him. May I suggest that you start comparing the training programs and sequence of the thousands of people who did it right or at least made an attempt to pursue the sport in an appropriate manner. Stop comparing with the low end of the bell curve. And stop justifying a persons actions based on a minority of events or people. This is not a court case where precedence is important. This is life where the health and wellbeing of YOU and/or your colleague is important. Let me put it to you simply: pull your $^$&$%ing head out of the sand and make some effort at preserving life. In the end, like your friend, this is your decision to make. Fun will then follow naturally. Good luck with it all. First BASE jump

Yet you defend the way he did the jump. I don't get it??? Up front you had doubts. In hindsight you defend his outcome despite it being life threatening and VERY poorly executed. Broken bridles are VERY SERIOUS problems. They only happen when gross errors are made. There is a wealth of information available to EVERYONE that would prevent this from happening. If the guy can afford to travel, he can afford gear and appropriate mentoring. Obviously his priorities are a little different to other people.l Currency is great. But it is worth nothing with a poor attitude! If he had of started with something like: "First jump. I feel great. But this happened and I messed up. Learned from that and will not repeat. Should have taken advise. etc" - I think most people would have had a different opinion of him. What do you think Andy??? I am sure that the people who love you wouldn't mind if other alternative outcomes arose as a result of the decision you were happy with. As long as you are happy, . . . . . . happy... You are an absolute threat and danger to all potential / new BASE jumpers. Your advise and example is very poor. I mean, come on!!! Anyone who suggests Bud has obviously got no idea!!!!!. (p.s. I take this back if the bud was brewed in the Czech Rep). Stay Safe - Have Fun - Good Luck The above could be crap, thought provoking, useful, or . . But not personal. You decide.

    Confused? .. Why?

The above are keys to doing lower margin of error activities more safely! Consistency, and minimal variability. Now imagine this conversation regarding a 100ft freefall?????? p.s. regarding the technique of pre-inflating by waving the p/c around: be very wary and careful of bridle / pilot chute / hand entanglement. It does happen. Especially when the conditions are a little windy as this will add a third dimension of possible error inducement. R.e the underarm throw, be very wary of bridle routing. I am sure you are considering these anyway. Regarding object turbulence, it starts as soon as a mass starts moving through the air. By definition, when the mass moves through the air, it displaces air particles and they have to go somewhere and do something. At lower air speeds little swirling eddies begin to be created because the particles are pushed rapidly to the side of the mass. They then want to fill the void (vacuum) that is created behind the mass as it moves through the air. This is the reason why p/c get stuck behind people's backs. At lower airspeed the strength of these air movements is less than at higher air speeds and they cover less area (i.e. the body induced burble increases its volume as the mass increases its descent rate). But the affect is still there. Watch a p/c as in inflates using the techniques you are discussing. There are two main reasons why it does not anchor better/quicker/more symmetrically than it does: one is the lack of initial tension and pressurisation, and the other is localised turbulence induced by air movements around BOTH the exiting body (which are caused by the body moving through the air) and the object (which are caused by air moving around the object). The first reason can be caused by technique issues (unsymmetrical throw, offset throws, improper location and placement of bridle and p/c materials during the throw, etc), and equipment issues (manufacturing quality, wear and tear of gear, etc). If you consider EVERY single variable and take the right corrective action, your ability to safely perform low freefalls increases. Thanks for posting the info and your experimentation. quote]what do you think my definition of 'possible' is? Since when did this forum become www.BASEJumping.psychologist.com??? I was asking your definition of live? Quadraplegic? DW!!!!!! I remember the umpteenth time I met DW. TB:"Bridge there, you haven't jumped it. No gear. Bad luck. You miss out". DW: "You've got some crap in your car, I know it". TB: "All I've got is a shitty water rig with no spare pilot chute". DW: "Just make sure you hang onto that bridle - I trust you ". As he steps off I call out, "shit, I've dropped it". He appreciated my sense of humour. I've BA another person off a building. Don't know about you, but I would not trust ANYBODY without a P/C as a minimum. Consequence: nil deployment. Reward: I can't think of any. Maybe you won't damage a pilot chute or you are testing the trust and/or skill level of your mate????? But I'm just a flacid appendage I guess.... p.s. BA is a bridle assist. Stay Safe - Have Fun - Good Luck The above could be crap, thought provoking, useful, or . . But not personal. You decide.

    Theory of relativity

D Bags have much higher potential for issues than s/l. As soon as you separate the canopy from the container PRIOR to exit, you have potential problems. IMHO The extra altitude you "may" get from a d-bag deployment, IS NOT worth all the extra messing around and rigging that d-bags require. S/L is much more consistent and repeatable, can be set up by self, can be self initiated in virtually ALL circumstances in minimal time, will you get you off most of the objects you would look at for d-bag (d-bag might give you one or two extra - MAYBE), you don't have to leave or retrieve stuff on 99.9% of occasions, etc. D Bag is a useful tool in certain applications, but in the overall balance, I tip towards S/L heavily as the preferred option. S/L is relatively safer (depending on technique and object). If you are naturally biased against low altitude stuff, or you have not been exposed to the logic of a variety of techniques or technologies available and the reasoning for them, then there is a higher probability that you will not favour those things as an option. This does not necessarily mean that they are good or bad options. It just means that give the circumstances (knowledge, experience, personal objectives, etc), they are not appropriate for you. What is that saying? "I'd rather ???? than ????? Stay Safe - Have Fun - Good Luck The above could be crap, thought provoking, useful, or . . But not personal. You decide.

Thanks for your feedback. I presume you were at the video night going by the AGM minutes. What a great opportunity to meet and provide face to face feedback. I am not sure what you look like so I did not know who to say hello to. I would be happy to introduce myself and chat. Feedback on the forums is a lot easier I suppose. Maybe next time. r.e. your post: Not tiring. You have put in lots of time and energy collecting all those rooly big grammaticals. Great work. I appreciate your efforts. I have no honour. I have not missed Jesse's principal thrust either. However, I think you might be thrusting slightly in the wrong direction. A hole is a hole I suppose. I have never jumped. I am just good at using Premiere and Photoshop. I am flattered that you actually think that I was an authority on the subject in distant times. Thanks for the compliments. You know I did some jumping with the God of BASE - Jesus of course. That is where I got my authority from. He said for me to go forth and teach the world about the faith and both this lifetime and the afterlife. I thought he wanted his disciples to hang around in this lifetime for a while. I got it all wrong. He meant the afterlife. I will now have to retract and unteach all of his disciples. I have seen the error of my ways. I will repent. Thank you for highlighting this to me. I would have thought that a non-jumper would have no practical knowledge whatsoever. What is that word? Oxymoron? Or lets stick to 2 syllables instead of 3. Maybe the latter two? Is that what you meant? I am happy to admit I am old and fat and lazy and ugly. And you are more than welcome to shit on me too. As long as I am providing entertainment, that is all that matters. FYRef - http://dictionary.reference.com/ - http://www.answers.com/main/reference.jsp Check out these CRW Big Way Shots . 17. The Aussies finally broke our national CRW formation record on 22nd Mar 2007. As per below, the old record existed for 23 years and was at the time the world record. None of the people from the old record were on the new record. Our new record is a baby by world standards, but we love it just the same. A 25 way diamond. Special thanks to Chris Gay for brilliant engineering, organisation, training, piloting, and gear provision (and for putting up with Ozzie humour). Also to Higgo and Sarge for organising the event. To Lindy et al for judging the formation. Wayno and Steve for their camerawork. To all the pilots, planes, manifests, cooks cleaners, brewers, townfolk, DZ owners, other people not mentioned, etc. And lets not forget us - the participants. Great work guys and gal. 18. I've done a few jumps on an older comp Tri 120 loaded at 2.1. Landings were fine as long as you landed it properly http://ozcrw.tripod.com/landings.htm. This means flying it in and not stalling it. The first question that you need to answer is what are you buying it for???? If you are doing big ways - then get a Lightning loaded around 1.3 to 1.375. If all your team mates are getting 120 competition Triathlons, then you should get the same. But if half your team members are not experienced or super great at landings, then getting a Lightning 143 is not such a bad thing. You can still rotate these at 4 to 5 secs average. If you are trying to max the number of points on your dives. The comp Tri's are better than Lightnings. But this is only really relevant once you get over 16/17 points in rotations etc. I think Lightnings are a little more forgiving on Landing. So consider your main usage requirements and the skill level(s) you are catering for. Stay Safe - Have Fun - Good Luck The above could be crap, thought provoking, useful, or . . But not personal. 19. The whole problem stems from the fact that those impressionable people won't read anything in context. So what Robi has written is not really detrimental. e.g. person 1 does double somersault with 1.5 twists tucked into layout. Person 2 sees this and attempts to repeat the same. Obvious conclusion (near death experience, tangled bridle, off heading, broken bits, whatever). Person 2 did not bother to read the rest of person 1's story. The story goes along the lines of: many hours at the gym and pool under instruction from expert coaching, building up from single reverse to . . . . . . to the end result, many hundreds of jumps prior, excellent spatial awareness, etc, etc. My point is this, if a person only reads the headline (or watches the jump) and then bases his/her decision only on a scant amount of information, then their outcome is very well deserved. This is laziness / sloppiness. Being time deficient is NOT a valid excuse either. If you do not have enough time to make some effort to prepare properly for an activity that can kill you, you have NO business indulging either!!!! Same thing about reading about it. Stay Safe - Have Fun - Good Luck The above could be crap, thought provoking, useful, or . . But not personal. You decide.
  20. If the reason is logical, fair, open minded, based on fact, and . . . logical . . . . then . . . Some arguments I have heard for not lrm: - you can lose your toggles on opening. Leading to off headings and flying/landing on rear risers. That only happens when: your gear is not compatable, your gear is not packed properly, your gear is not maintained properly, or your gear is not used properly. DO IT RIGHT. - because you might drop your toggles after opening when there is a long canopy ride. HOLD ON. - etc Can these things happen? Of course. Are tail gates infallable?? NO. Have you seen a tailgate lockup? They are nasty, especially when close to the ground. Have you seen lineovers on slider up/down? Yes. People can clear them with a knife. BUt what about when your jump is lower and the hangup is causing rotations/spins/etc and you have your hands occupied trying to maintain some form of steady flight in order to prevent hooking in?? What about . . . . . . . . The important thing is thus, you should not put a bandaid on your broken leg. Fix the broken leg up.. i.e. fix the reason for the fault in the first place. It is when we start applying bandaids that the overall integrity of a system begins to break down and the complexity increases, eventually leading to a failure of the system. An example for the people who have no idea what I am getting at (which may be all of you ). If you wear padding because your landings are crap, and then you stop using the line release mod because your aerials are crappy and you dump unstable with your toggles brushing your other gear and your toggles pop, and you do aerials in the first place becaause you can't nail a stable running exit, and you do a running exit because you can't stop rotating on a standing exit, and you constantly have off headings in one direction and then exit at an angle, and . . . . . . . . . Fix the problems. Learn how to fly the canopy first (maybe try something like more airtime per jump. I don't know. .. . . . . Maybe something like jumping out of an aircra_ _ . . . . . .. Perhaps doing 1000 standing exits in a swimming pool / bungee / gym / etc. . . . . . . . Maybe learn about rigging and equipment compatability so that you really know what goes together and what doesn't. No matter how hard you try, the willy is not supposed to go in the nasal passage!!!!!!!!! Perhaps giving your gear to an expert and they find that your OH will be fixed with a reline, your toggles are dropping because the stow is too loose in the first place, . . . . 21. It's relevant to all walks of life. In industry, safety is a huge business. Many companies have philosphies along the lines of: "the company is responsible for providing a safe workplace and/or is responsible for employee safety"! Some people actually admit to switching off when they drive through the front gate and EXPECT things to be safe, because that is the expectation. Then they stick their hand in moving machinery and . . . . . . . The other factor that people neglect is "each employee is responsible for their own safety". The company provides policies, equipment, procedures, resources, etc. But in the end, the employee is the one who goes home. . . .or not. . . . . . . You have got to follow the policies, etc. Some interesting tid bits from BASE jumping. - Slim used to say: "Pad up and Pound In". The way I understood Slim was that he was going to attempt a jump regardless, and he introduced excess padding to minimise the likelihood and consequence of injury. It was purely a backup and nothing to be relied upon. Fundamentals is what must get you through. But what did this comment do for other people??? They used the padding to overcome personal skill deficiencies and justify their attempts on advanced sites. What makes it worse is that some people actually believe they are now safe as well as capable!!!!!. - AAD's in skydiving is another example. A good jumper will say AND UNDERSTAND that the device is there but IS NOT to be relied upon. It is merely a backup. A good jumper will execute his procedures independantly. Yet you meet lots of people who actually use the device. People who have had several cypres fires are examples ( to me) of: the working environment that I exist in must be safe and I do not have to think or intervene. - the all time classic is: (s)he jumped it, so can I..... This MUST be taken in context. If he is a guru and you are not, think about the jump a little more. In the end, your brains, hands, and other body parts are your cypres. Use the fuckers............ Wearing body armour is great. But don't jump a site that is almost a guaranteed killer just because you have some on. Sounds like 283 & RB may be thinking similar things????????
