  1. Come on folks, we all know BASE jumpers are like unicorns, they don't exist!!!! Urban legend and nothing more......... Probably just an out of control traction kiter that caught some air. My best guess anyway...... SabreDave
  2. From what I read he did everything right! Sometimes just bad luck is to blame such as in this case. At least it is Canada which means he will get his rig back and probably before spring! Bummer dude!! SabreDave
  3. Mine does. I had a very specific conversation with the underwriter about that........ He had to go do research and check with higher ups, then got back to me and said that yes, they'd cover the broken window too Well that does surprise me alot! And the premium for this kind of coverage was reasonable? Do you know offhand the difference between that kind of coverage and what it woul have cost you for the basics as a Joe Couch-er that takes very little risk in life? I thought most if not all policies had the right to with hold if you break the law, participtae in a riot, act of war, act of God etc etc etc................ INteresting, I stand corrected SabreDave
  4. I probably would, yes. Whatever happens, I would face the consequences.. So.......if you HAD a rescue you would go out of your way to make sure every penny of taxpayers money involved in said rescue was paid back by you?!?! I call BULLSHIT............. If you were lying there bleeding and dying I don't believe for one second you would just quietly die with a stiff upper lip because you wanted to face the consequences. You would be screaming for help, for your mommy, for someone to save your ass if they could. Brave talk but utter bullshit, sorry buddy, gotta call it when I smell it! There is definately an american feel to the responses. I agree with the slippery slope idea. Where do you draw the line??! Really? The dumbass unprepared hikers, climbers, car accident victims, drug overdoses, alcohol poisoning, raging case of herpes, teen pregnancy and on and on.............. I will happily contribute to the rescue of those seeking adventure with my tax dollars. Thing about BASE is it is soooooo small, a tiny blip on the radar as far as cost to the public although when it gors wrong it gets all sorts of coverage but that is a different issue. I feel pretty fuckin'good about living in a country where everyone gets rescued and everyone gets medical attention without insurance. Even those who are not citizens of this country! About the paying for yourself so no regulation is forced upon us(Tom's Point), again far more american than anything. I don't think your insurance covers you if you are breaking the law is this correct?! The same would apply here in Canada if we had insurance. If I am out doing legal jumps off our legal cliffs and something goes wrong we deserve to be helped just as any human being does and we will be. Equal treatment and I dare say after speaking with some rescue types that they are somewhat more happy to rescue those that are out pushing the limits a bit than those who are just too stupid to bring a rain jacket or proper foot wear. Happy Hucking in 2007 everybody!!! SabreDave

  7. Hmmmm, I 'll send this thread to BASE 736. He bought some sweet stereo mics that are about the size of earphones. ($800 Cdn I think) and the sound is stellar! He mounted them on a Protec right above each ear. Gives great realistic sound and they don't start to distort until around 7-8 seconds in. They are sweeeeet!! 2 good examples.... http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=2552&string=Jason%20Cooper & http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=1702&string=Jason%20Cooper And remember this is compressed! 8. You may not care if it gets torn off but think of what is below you. Is it empty fields always or something else. I know I wouldn't want a terminal velocity anything hitting me in the head! SabreDave
  9. QuoteDo you feel wierd about loaning your rig? reply] Yes, it has nothing to do with packing, I just don't loan out my rig. It feels like your giving your GF/wife to some other guy to go have the time of their life. I won't check it on a plane either, carry on only. SabreDave

    Breakcord

Jimmy told me it was 1 in 20 or something), but that tying the cord halfway down the bridle reduced the premature breakages to the point that they were unable to create any with repeated test drops. They created bridles with sewn in loops to static line from, about halfway down, just for that demo. An easy way to tie in partway down is to put an overhand loop in your bridle and tie to that. Good to know. I mean, I heard different things from different people as you always will in this activity. I do always use the double break-cord method since premature breakage was obviously a concern at S/L heights. I must say one of the main reasons I have not done it that way is management of the bridle/ PC. Having seen others do it this way and lots of videos and some horror stories I didn't like the looks of it soo much. I liked having the PC right up at the S/L, bridle s-folded in my hand so the PC can't catch wind, dance around swinging 4 feet of bridle with it etc... I will however try it next time. I like the idea of having a bridle with sewn in point on it. SabreDave

    Breakcord

Yes, the knot should in theory be the weakest link. Don't know about a surgeons knot for strength but on a climbing rope the figure eight knot is one of the strongest at 80% of the rope's weight/shockload rating. So, would you not then expect break-cord to break at the knot!??! All the times I have found or seen the break-cord after a jump, it never seems to come apart near the knot. Any thoughts? Also, I have heard as someone mentioned earlier about tying in lower down the bridle. I have always used the the PC loop with an extra piece of static 5or6 mm climbing cord to actually attach the break cord to. IN my thoughts, there shouldn't really be anymore shock load to the canopy/system even with an extra 3-4 feet of bridle because the break-cord will still break at the same amount of force. Any thoughts/explanations on this or really good reasons to tie into the bridle lower!!? Thanks SabreDave
  12. Amen to that. I still have a lingering fear of climbing over railings. When I first started it freaked me right out. I could stand with my toes hanging over a cliff alright but railings........ugh. Annibal, I really enjoyed reading that!! It was great, thankyou for sharing it! SabreDave
  13. When I was there in 2004 it was not yet closed. It was, " do it early in the morning, no funeral jumps and please don't jump the crap out of it" mode. It sucks that it is now closed but it is their town not ours and the other exits are super sweet anyway. Edit to add: None of the four of us bothered to jump when we were there due to the sensetive nature of it at the time. SabreDave
  14. If I remember correctly it hangs out a good 20+ form the wall. Don't know the story behind it but they light it up at night along with part of the falls. SabreDave

    Traveling with Gear

I have flown with my BASE rig more than a few times. I have had some problems but in the end convinced the powers that be to let me take it as carry on. I don't trust those ramp-rats or anyone with my BASE rig....ever. SabreDave
  16. http://georgechurchill.blogspot.com/ Nice! SabreDave
  17. I still skydive but not alot. The season after I started BASE I did 60 jumps, this year maybe 20. I actually came to the conclusion quite recently that other than learning to wingsuit I am almost done with skydiving in general. Too many rules, costs alot to stay current and after 16 years it's time to get a paraglider! I have always been interested in it(PG), it conforms more to what I like about BASE. Good friends, backcountry settings, no motorized equipment needed etc..... Skydiving is still fun for me but I just want to try something new. SabreDave
  18. VOLVO!!!! Pre 2002 VOLVO, not to mistaken for a VULVA. Seriously, they go forever........................... SabreDave
  19. Short answer is no. I have used my 38 inch, large hole zp AV from 4-10 seconds. for 8-terminal I have been using a 36 small mesh zp AV. I have been thinking that I should get a 32 now to help slow things a bit. How much of a difference might this make..anyone??? SabreDave
  20. You don't seem to have much common sense yourself. Quit flinging poo like a spider monkey. Try and give just ONE useful piece of info, a useful suggestion etc......just one. Is this possible or are you really not capable of anything more than stirring up shit and saying innapropriate things to people who have done a GOOD job?? I look forward to the flow of wisdom from you almighty BASE rigger..... SabreDave

Yeah, in a very strange way that is kinda what I am saying SabreDave

    BD v TFs FJC

Not really. Alot of people who feel like me couldn't be bothered to respond to you since a large portion of the time you come off as aggressive, arrogant and out of line. You throw down accusations but no real intelligent solutions or ideas. Your right, your methods are shite. Have a nice day SabreDave
  23. I first ground launched my Sabre 230 in 1996 with skis. It was a ton-o fun for sure. I did have about 300 jumps on my canopy then. As for dying, yeah at my highest point i was about 140 feet off the ground in low visibility due to snow. Winds were not great and it wasn't the smartest thing I have done but maybe on of the funnest. SabreDave
  24. Baked on good weed for my very first jump in 1990. I was 18 and 100%bounce proof Also stoned on my first night RW 2 way, one of my most memorable jumps. SabreDave
  25. Maybe a longer reply would clear up my thoughts to you. If you read my first post would would have seen that I personally am in favour of helmets and armour. When people have asked me, I have always advocated the use of such said equipment. I did not anywhere in my posts speak to the injury rate of armour vs. no armour! I would dare say there is a huge difference between Mtn biking/skateboarding and BASE for the avg. participant in each respective activity. I have jumped with people that use helmets and people without, whatever. As for my second post that seemed to get U bunched up, it was a read between the lines kind of thng, meaning .... what one man views as freedom or ecstasy, another views as STUPID. I love BASE too and for the same reasons as you and more but the MAJORITY of the world would say/think it is a stupid thing to do. I think U are agreeing with the original poster that jumping without is stupid?!?! Throwing yourself off big things is crazy! I frickin love it but let's face it, BASE is not normal behaviour by any stretch of the imagination. It goes well against our programming to stay alive. Yes, I know...so does alot of shit, BASE is not alone there at all. SabreDave
