Also, check the pressure in your spare tire once a month when you check the pressure in your tires.

    Derek V

You might just discover you don't have a spare tire.

We owned my wife's new car for an embarrassingly long time before I checked and discovered we only had an OEM fix-a-flat kit. I've since put a tire in its place.

  2. Was that 3 separate aircraft or one plane with 3 quick passes? It looks like 3 separate planes. This means that he had to have sabotaged the loads before take off. He was either good at hiding his nefariousness or there wasn't a gear check prior to exit.

  3. I've had two hawk encounters. The first was at Finger Lakes, NY in 2001. The hawk and I were flying in the same air for a moment. My wing loading must have been heavier than his because he stayed and I descended.

Last year a hawk flew underneath me in Wisconsin. Probably wasn't the same hawk.

SKYDIVE: 1. n. The descent of a person to the surface from an aircraft in flight when he or she uses or intends to use a parachute during all or part of that descent.

I looked in the dictionary for the definition and to my surprise, the noun “skydive” isn’t listed! The Cambridge, MacMillan, Meriam-Webster, and Oxford dictionaries list it as a derivative of the word “skydiving”. Dictionary.com has it listed as a verb.

  5. How many bazillions of them are sitting in closets because their owners stopped jumping for whatever reason? They don't sell the rig because they're going to get back into the sport someday. And of course someday never comes.

  6. And the skydiving connection: This Bell 412 (N412AC) from the convention at Quincy is now owned by Wood Buffalo Helicopters of Fort McMurray. I'll bet she is getting a real work out.

  7. Way cool!

I jumped an S2C at Quincy. Is that considered a different model airplane? Or is more like the difference between a C182D and a C182E?

Mandatory? I don't agree with that.

Good idea? Absolutely. "Comm Capability" is a nice thing to have. If you don't want to hear it ring, turn it off (they all have a "off" button, ya know :P)

What if you land out and hurt yourself (sprain an ankle or knee or similar) and can't walk back.

Or have a friend land out, you follow them down and find them hurt. Leave and go for help? Or stay with them and hope it arrives?

Or simply the ability to call back to manifest and say "I landed out, I'm ok and will walk back" and save them the time and trouble of searching for you.

Or "I landed out by the Antique Mall. Please send someone to come and get me."

That is my spiel, almost exactly. I highly advocate carrying a phone on every jump.

My rig has an ROL pocket for the express purpose of carrying my phone when I'm not wearing any other pockets. ;)

  9. And just for the record, USPS Priority 2-day mail is not guaranteed. I found out the hard way after tracking a package for 16 days

Closing an obligated airport is a long, complicated and involved process.
All skydivers should take a look at the FAA's Airport Compliance Manual. 5190.6b
    http://www.faa.gov/airports/resources/publications/orders/compliance_5190_6/

This is the rule book for the airport sponsors to follow.

  11. The local public school system recreation department has "adult enrichment" courses. I took one called Sew Easy and relearned the basics of sewing and the machine. From there I took the next logical step, using my wife's Kenmore, I rebuilt a canopy to jump. ;) I didn't have the faith to actually land the canopy but a post-jump inspection showed that the canopy was totally landable.

  12. Dropzone locater for the state of New Mexico. There is a listing for Skydive Hobbs. If I click on the link listed, www.skydiveh0bbs.com (with an oh instead of the zero), I get redirected to a link that causes the browser to lock up. It happened with Chrome and Safari.

(Yeah, I know. Don't click on that link any more. :)

  13. I am looking to identify dropzones listed in the USPA database the are NOT active dropzones. For whatever reason, the dropzone location listed does not fly jumpers on a regular basis.

For instance, Napoleon Skydiving Center has been closed for a decade or more but the dropzone is still listed. (Skydive Tecumseh is currently jumping at that location.)

I have no nefarious motives. I'm just updating my personal database of dropzones in the US.

Back in the day I believe Icarus (?) would make you nearly any size you asked for, i.e 166, 152, 121, etc.

They still do, to include fractional sizes. I own an Icarus Omni 183.5 and an Icarus Omni 178.5.

I just bought a Safire 2 from them about 2 months ago and the total import/duty taxes I owed C.O.D. was $38.

My experience was about the same. Except FedEx mistakingly billed it to my work account (County Government) because I had the canopy shipped to me there. I called up and complained, they credited it right away. I then asked, "OK, now how do I go about paying the fee?". FedEx told me that they would pay it as a one time courtesy because of the inconvenience. Score! :)

Most excellent card! We opted for stickers. :)

  17. Let's not lose sight of this accomplishment! A 17-way is impressive. A 17-way where everyone is wearing an unfamiliar suit (birthday type) is even more so.

The key word in this is "SANSFormation". I have no doubt that there have been larger naked formations (see above) but this is the largest one to the SANS criteria, basically each jumper has to be, or become a SANS member.

The SANS is very loosely modeled after POPS. I'm sure the over 40 set made jumps together before POPS started recognizing them.
