The guy that did the announcing at the Wis Dells back in the 70's was the best ever. He went by Colonel something. I had a couple thousand jumps and went up to visit the guys for the weekend. I watched the show and I thought for sure they were going to die or worse the way he announced it. Then the nest day one of the guys had a spinning mal on a Delta II and took it in the lake. The Colonel made it sound like it was a normal part of the act. Show biz!!

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but the guy is going to get a $100 fine for illegal passing. He'll send in the check or hire a local lawyer and be done.

I've heard rumors of a 5 point 100 at Oshkosh. Not even a mention of jumpers on the performer list or daily schedule. Hasn't changed much since I was there 40 years ago.

Yes there is a rail pass. Tell her to take the trains every where. A bike if its short enough distance. Buses and taxis get stuck in the horrible traffic.

The idea of the mule is to feed in co-ordinates and it goes off on its own. Or it can follow you like the golf bags.

There's an Army mule that has 6 legs and run by a 2 stroke engine. The thing is just creepy.

Unfortunately, I believe this lady is confused. I live near one of the largest DZ's in the US. I have been outside talking to more than one of my neighbors when an airplane fly's over. They all look up and say "That's one of those sky diving planes." Even if its a jet, an old radial or the counties twin they fly around at a couple hundred feet looking for code violators.

If the judge is going to listen to the "skydiving" noise. Is he/she staying there to listen to all the other noises? Trains, dogs, cars, etc? Is the judge going to pay the bills, feed and cloth the people he/she will put out of a job if the ruling goes against the skydiving operation?

Student in Deland hung his main on the ""wind sock". By the time he went on the next load they had changed his name in manifest. When he went back up to new england area the name was waiting for him.

Another thing I was taught, was to spit. If the spit went down you could land it. If the spit went up, get your reserve out.

The 70's. Gear changed every week. New sky dives. Sex, drugs, rock and roll. No video cameras so you could lie. It wasn't ME that screwed up the formation! DC 3's, Lodestars, Beech's. Then came the turbines. Boooogey's. The birth of AFF and tandems.

Buddy of mine use to love doing hand stands on the iron. Another one loved sliding down the columns head first. Some other goofy bastard road his motor cycle across the girder so he could be the first one to drive across the bridge.

Back in psych 101 they taught that people learn three ways.
Pictures, most guys learn like this, and these are the people that if you tell them directions they don't hear you. But give them a map and they are good.
Reading. People that learn from a book.
Verbal. Also called sleeping through lecture classes.
Then there's the mule skinner method: Hit them in the head with a 2x4, tell them what you want them to know, then hit them again to impress upon them the importance of what you just told them.
Then there is the most important lesson I ever got. I was asked if I wanted to teach the class. No way I said. "Who you going to jump with next year?" I always taught every student with that in mind.

Fly, if for no other reason than not having to travel commercial.

Mike Melvin invented the BOC in early 70's. I have it in my closet. He also had a pud on it instead of a plastic pipe, or wiffle ball.
Bill Buchman invented the 6 flap reserve container to separate the pilot chute from the canopy.

Some Russian was jumping at Jean Paul's around 73. He threw his stuff on the ground, then shoved it in the bag. I asked him how that worked. "I not buy it" was his answer. I never flaked, straightened etc after that. So I believe he invented the trash pack.
Gary and Joe Dupris laced two B4 harness together in the 60's and jumped one main and one reserve.

If you want to feel like a vet, help take care of the new vets. Go up to them at the airport or anywhere you meet them. Shake their hand, look them in the eye and tell them thanks for serving. Then tell them to get in the VA system as soon as they get out.
