  1. Might check to see if the student is picking a spot or a line (road, runway) for heading. I've had them rotate around a spot, not even realizing it. U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. The rest are just filler. scr 316
  2. Don't knock the wuffos. I got my apprenticeship in construction cause someone bounced and that's all they wanted to talk about at the interview. My kid got out of an IRS audit the same way. 3. Back in the day a C was a competition license and a D was an expert which kind of covered being an instructor, jump master and about anything else. I never did know what the hell a A and B were for. I (and a lot of people I jumped with) only got a license to to go to the Nationals. I was jump mastering 75 jumps and teaching at 100. When I got my grand one of the guys handed me his wings. That's the way he got his. I bought a set and gave his back to him. I was sitting at the nationals in OK and heard they wouldn't give a girl her wings because she only had a C. She had been on the US team and they only needed a C for comp. I went over and gave her my wings. I never put in for the certificate, never cared. I think the USPA awarded a set of wings to a guy in the late 70's for making 1000 S/L jumps. He was a military instructor. I always thought the licenses were a measure of proficiency and the wings were survival. If the wings are a metal of expertise then why have the D. And shouldn't you also have a Pro rating, Coach rating, FFI and TI ? You can get all them by a grand. Or should you have to have those to get 2, or 3? 5. Wrecked my motocross bike showing off for my girlfriend. Couldn't get parts. Saw an ad $19 to skydive. After I made a couple jumps I asked what they did to the gear between jumps. When I heard nothing, I sold the bike. I think the coolest story I ever heard was Paul Thompson from Paragear. He watched the show Rip Cord growing up and as soon as he was old enough he went jumping. U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. 6. Check with Embry Riddle in Daytona. They are an aviation school and use to have a skydiving club. Go there to learn air traffic control, aircraft maintenance, etc and jump at Deland. If you need extra money for jumping give plasma like everyone else there. I think that 9/11 change is designed for vocational training like plumber, electrician. I went through apprenticeship training 40 years ago and it was such a hassle to get benefits for it. Maybe they made it easier. You can also get unemployment benefits when you get out. Those you get from your home state. Get in the VA health car system as soon as you get out too. Go for check ups, even if you are fine. That way you can get help if you need it. 7. Jumpinfool is correct. I volunteer with the park service and they don't care if you die. If they did they would outlaw rock climbing. You can't base jump in the parks, cause your slobs. You can't montain bike, motocross, jeep, or snowmobile either. I know of at least one park you can't roller skate in. Are internet petitions even worth a dam? They weren't. Has something changed? There is no way to verify who signs them, that I know of, so they aren't accepted. I also believe you are petitioning the wrong person. Even if the President says its OK, the secretary of the interior has to say its OK. Even if he says its OK. Then the superintendent of of the parks has to say its OK. Even if all those people say its OK the head ranger of each park has the right to accept or reject activities in their park. In order to get that ranger to let you use the park you're going to have to find someone to watch over the activity. And knowing the gun totters (the in park rangers) they are going to watch you for anything you do that is a problem. Cause getting BASE kicked back out would be a big feather in their cap. Promotion wish. So, pick out a park. Build a group of volunteers that will be there 24/7. A plan to protect the natural state of the park, including an environmental study. Then bring a petition in writing to that park ranger. Guard that privilege like you child for 5 years or so and then go on to the next park. 11. Lopo worked well for Owin Quinn. If you want a really fast opening canopy, find a Tri-con. If you can't find that, look for a Piglet reserve. U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. The rest are just filler. scr 316
  12. AFAIK One of the critical difference between air shows and races is the distance frsom the flt path to the crowds. I'm not a pilot, and havent been to reno. The Box seats $$$ were in hind sight danger close. Thats part of the draw I guess the noise, speed, maybe feeliing your filling in youur teeth vibratiing as the planes buzz by.
  13. The pilot chute was in the pocket of his shorts, inside his jump suit. I wondered how he could find the thing in freefall. U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. The rest are just filler. scr 316
  14. I was just reading in the safety forum about saying something to someone about the safety of their and it reminded me. First to you kids that don't know. At one time we put our leg straps through "pockets" in our jump suits. I was sitting in a DC3 at Zhills, Turkey meet sometime in the 70's. Camera man sitting next to me had his pilot chute in his hand. I watched as he folded it and then put it in the pocket of his jump suit. I asked him how he did that. Didn't the pilot chute fall down in the leg of his jump suit. He said he put it in the pocket of his shorts. I asked how well that worked. He said: No one borrows my gear. 17. Wash it with GO-JO. Just the plain stuff not the orange with the pumice in it. When we lived in CO the dog got skunked at least once a year. I went through all the stuff. Tomato juice, skunk off, perfumes, etc. Nothing worked til the GO-JO. U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. 19. They probably don't do it, because how many CEO's, engineers from aircraft companies that have made crappy airplanes would be busted. Then you'd work your way through military contractors who've screwed our troops with carp. And on and on. 20. Woman had two personalities. One axe murderer, one stepford wife. I still kind of miss her, but I've been afraid of red heads ever since. Buddy of mine married her and they found out she had Vitamin B deficiency schizophrenia. Got he on meds and she was fine. 23. The first time I remember what would be the modern style of Packer. Some one that packed for experienced jumpers, was at Freak Brother/WFFC in Quincy in 82. These where people that came there just to pack for money. Before that it was like other people have said, a buck for a student rig or a free jump.
