  1. I watched some of the final round....I don't think I have EVER seen a less attractive Course, for a PGA Event... scrubby looking fairways,,,, No trees... very little in the way of attractive plantings...Certainly NOT Augusta !!! didn't stick WITH it,,, long enough to hear any aircraft noise... ONe dude in the gallery was certainly Very VOCAL !!! What was Up ,, with THAT????? jmy
  2. seems kind of simple... IF the Tandem Instructors are sensing " a long delay in groups Getting around to their Exit "....... Instead of hollering Anything,,,, ( the tone of which I would guess, could upset or concern their student )......Can't they simply make a mental note to Check the Damn Spot.... some time after the drogue is Out..... And at THAT time, assess whether they are REAL Long.....????? In which case, use a hand signal to "notify any outside video person " of that fact... and Pull somewhat higher than normal...!!! Our TMs would give us " the bird " sometimes 2 handed !!! when that was the case..... No issues... we all just pulled higher !!! and Everyone got Back !!!
  3. Occasionally I make a honeymoon salad. Lettuce alone. hahahah That was Funny...
  4. I visually check the locking cables of each riser release to be sure that they are UP and well into the hard housings. Then I make a second scan for the friends with whom I exited...to see just WHERE they each went,,,, compared to when I first spotted them a few seconds earlier...( I mostly jump with 3 others, so it's not too hard. With jumps from 20 place planes i scan the sky, throughout my flight....) Then???? I Enjoy the View, and assess whether where I AM ... Is where I want to BE...If so, I fly on, usually in quarter brakes. If NOT.. I get going, for where I want to be in order to have the altitude I like,, for starting my pattern...That dynamic changes for each jump, but Knowing the basic wind direction and speeds of the day, help to get me in the right place for beginning my downwind leg...I learned with years and years of jumping round canopies,,, " what you're doing while at 2,000 feet can have a Large impact, on where you'll be at 500 feet. " Plan ahead. Ram Airs of today, give us much more leeway, and recovery but the concept's the same. I'm rigid about flying a square and predictable pattern, and try to do 90 degree turns to base and then to final in whatever hand direction .. is preferred by the DZ...I always take a few looks at the windsock or ground located streamer...while in the pattern... to be sure about direction...but stay locked onto any pre-discussed landing direction, in low wind conditions... I Seldom "swoop " hahaha but enjoy seeing others do that... I'm watching for speedier canopies than mine, all throughout my descent . watch for them After i'm ON the ground, as well... I try for a square and gentle standing landing, Once in a while a One-Foot Stand Up...
  5. Correct.... johnhking1 His name was J. Bateman.. He had a farm with a runway . That place was a DZ.. for a short time,,, using a C180 which belonged to the DZO. The property owner had the Aero and flew a load occasionally... I jumped it ONCE...at another local dropzone.... and that was enough... slow climber as I recall... I think we put 6 jumpers in it... Plane AND Pilot were lost during a crash on the day of an airshow at our City Airport ( ROC ) . A Beech 18 from the airports flying club AND the Aero-Commander were set to fly loads of local jumpers. I was with the group manifested for the Aero, and we waited,,, and WAITED,, for it's arrival...Soon got the word that he'd crashed upon departure from his grass strip about 20 miles away... This was during the late 70s...I believe there was a fuel starvation issue, and always thought, what would have happened, had he Made it to the show, and We boarded,,, and THEN....... that problem showed itself... My group did our skydive from the Beech.. R I P ..... J. Bateman jmy
  6. Hmmmm.... How about if OUR SOS Organization , Skydivers Over Sixty, plans a Boogie at the Airport..??? Then, it can Be Our SOS versus Their SOS. Nothing like a bunch of Skydiving Oldsters, to help Stir things UP a Bit.. jmy
  7. no... I made a couple of thousand jumps, without one... But from the time I added an AAD to my rig... I always activated it, as part of my pre-jump procedure... It occurs to me,,,, that "forgetting things " and skydiving , are Not good partners. j
  8. I try not to get annoyed... by very much... So.. it's O "K" .. with me... always knew it , to mean a thousand. Grand ??? isn't it ?
  9. It IS what saved My novice ass a half a dozen times....Until I "graduated" to a 28 foot Lopo !!!! for a couple of dozen More jumps... Then a French PAP...for the next 900 or so !!!! early 70s to late 70s I know,, I sound Square....
  10. welcome at this point try to learn with your Ears, and with your Eyes.. watch and listen .. try to stay on top of When loads will be Exiting and observe canopy control techniques of those who are landing... Some examples will be good ones and some could be Bad ones. try to differentiate between the two. Questions should NOT be discouraged, at any progressive DZ...
  11. I and Nancy And our Son had the Pure Pleasure to attend a Broncos game in Dec of 2014...!!!! They were playing the Buffalo Bills !!!! Unaware that a demo was to occur, we were very EXCITED when we saw the King Air and then canopies !! Our seat were literally 4 rows from the top edge of the Stadium with the huge scoreboard to our left!!! Watching this team Dive !! >> one after the other and spiral and complete each flight, to a great landing was a Huge charge for the entire crowd. My thoughts were " 99 % of these fans have NO Clue..... of the complexity of what they just Saw " !!! Hahahaha But WE DID..... It was one for MAny wonderful occurences during our trip to Colo...Great article, thanks for the solid explanation of Team Thunderstorm. p.s. Peyton beat the Bills that day but not by ,AND the Bills defense managed to break his " multi-season string of at least one touchdown pass, per Game " !! ;-)
  12. i have been doing this for decades
  13. ... another skydiver ... His/Her head ... an airplane ... a tetrahedron ... an FAA Investigator ... a cactus ... a runway ... a car in the parking lot ... the DZO ... the DZOs car ... the DZOs wife ... the windsock ... any tree ... the beer line
  14. ***You know I love it! We have almost the same routine. I never have bacon cooking, but I do usually have the weekly clothes washing going. Mark missed the Harley piece, but I saw it. I can't believe how much the bikes cost there! *** right.... 12 grand Just to register it !! I liked the report on FDRs solid and sensible program called the C C C which was a community jobs corps which apparently did amazing things, mostly at the National Parks !!! And which came at a time,,, the early 30s ,,,, of too much unemployment and too many folks "needing something to DO " ..... HE was unique, I'd say,,, in ENVISIONING such a thing, and yet todays "leaders" can't even demonstrate the common sense to COPY that..... here when we are in desperate times, once again.. I missed the part with Weird Al.....????? .....( had to keep the bacon from Burning !!! but Do enjoy Mo Rocca he usually has an interesting segment...
  15. I thought of you, normiss, when they did the piece about The Harley Dealer....in China !!!!
  16. Happy Sunday !!! Does anyone here ever see this program??? It's a TV show. It's been on for a while,,, with some interesting, timely and entertaining reports.
  17. i was a sophomore at a college that had a skydiving club !!!, AND the damn airport was 4 miles from the campus !! Having never been in an airplane at that point in my life (I was a kid ) I really was just looking for an airplane ride. SO I and 2 friends went to the static line training class ON campus,,, 2 evenings a thurs and a Friday and we were 3 of about 25 ..We Showed Up.... the next morning,,( some didn't ) ahead of schedule and with excited smiles. We got geared up with 28 foot cheapos or T 10s and chest mounted reserves.... Up I went Really enjoyed the take off and flight and grinned when I looked out the window to see the dormitory building, that we had walked out Of...... an hour earlier !!! Birds' EYE View, as they Say
  18. find some true Oldsters @ the DZ...who have been around for Forty Years !!! or more.... ask them to describe their memories of jumping a T- 10 Then ask 'em if they ever jumped a 44 footer cheapo !!! It would be Like THAT !!!
  19. great advice PixieUK.... good thinking, Not to become "an obsessive skydiver ".. AND Recognizing the Pure Joy of flying !! is a fine reason to skydive... ...Don't forget the "parachuting" part....It's always been a real treat for me... Not only to " Be Under Canopy "
  20. I met Bob Roach at one of the WFFC events At Quincy Ill... We shared a skydive from the 727 Boeing. He was part of a group, with 4 others from South Dakota, and they were kind enough to allow me to join them..... Good Guy... saddened to hear of this. bsbd Bob....
  21. Sad to learn of this... Pat was a premier Camera Man and a Nice Guy....some of the first aerial photos, of skydives that I was a part of,,, were taken by Pat Rogers......I remember him from Stormville And from Gardiner.... bsbd
