The funniest thing is seeing US jumpers with 5000+ jumps freak out on a EU dropzone because there are no packers, and they have no clue how to actually close their container and pack a main themselves And clouds..oooh how Americans fear clouds Still waiting for that wingsuit competition entry of you guys... 6. I haven't been flamed in a long time --- makes me feel all warm and fuzzy !!! Many apologies from a fat, big suit, arrogant american.
  7. With the investment that some of the instructors / schools have made in suits (many thousands of dollars) asking a nominal fee for instruction/suit up keep is not unreasonable. If we were to charge enough to cover our cost for suits, travel to DZs, and other expenses no one would be able to afford the classes. This is far from a profitable venture, of the most active instructors (Jeff, Chuck, Justin, Nick and a hand full of others) I would dare say none of them are in it for the money. If they are, guys we need to talk, there are far more profitable things to invest your time in. Given the early stage of our sport, I would hope most instructors are teaching because they are passionate about introducing new folks safely to wingsuit flight. In the mid-Atlantic, we are still in the process of building a solid core group of flyers. We do not charge instructional fees, but do ask that the student pay for the instructor's slot. If we are invited by a DZ to come to them and provide first flight training and organizing, we have on a few occasions been provided paid jump slots (about 25% of the time). Unless you get a number of big sponsors, live on next to nothing, work for a manufacturer and sell your body ---- there's no money in this. I'm in it so that I can walk up to a student after a great first flight and say: " DUDE !!!! THAT WAS F%$KING, AWESOME !!! THAT F%$KING ROCKED DUDE !!!! " (in the words of Nick R.)

  14. I will absolutely admit that I have no hard data or numbers on this topic. just a gut feel from traveling to a number DZs across several states supporting events and training. I believe I heard one of the USPA execs on SDR mention that there was either 36K or 38K paid members in USPA for the year. I believe the number was also published by USPA. If there are 1000 "active" wingsuit pilots then one out of every 38 people, to include all those under 200 jumps would have and fly a wingsuit. Part of this discussion is one of perspective. For example the answer for each of the questions below would likely be different: What is the number of current skydivers that have flown a wingsuit? What is the number of current skydivers that own a wingsuit? What is the number of current skydivers that put more than 10 flights on their wingsuit in a year? What is the number of current skydivers that 51% or more of their skydives are wingsuit jumps? What is the number of current skydivers that have made wingsuit flight their primary discipline (e.g. 90% + of all their jumps)? I am in no way attempting to label or make judgements about any current or future wingsuit pilot. In fact some of my most enjoyable flights are with first time flyers and I welcome them to the community warmly and with the desire to see them continue. In terms of "How many of us are there?", the point here is how and in what context is the question asked. If we go to the extremes, "How many people have had first flights?" I heard Jeff N. trained 400+ people during his travels across the US over the past year or more. On the other end, What is the number of people in the US that have made wigsuit flying their sole discipline? My exprience is based upon seeing the same 20 core people on the East Coast show-up at wingsuit events time and time again. Many of these being based up with Flock U, down with the Z-Flock, the guys from Texas, and our small group in Orange Virginia. Perhaps Jeff might have the best sense of the numbers around this topic given his wide travels over the past 18 months. ALL THIS SAID ---- Our focus is to introduce as many people to wingsuit flight safely as we can, and keep them invovled.
  15. We gave the figure 300 in the US to the Washington Times reporter to rather overstate than understate the numbers. I agree with the comments here. As Chris and I travel to various events and DZs we find one or two people at each that have tried a wingsuit once and far fewer that own a wingsuit, and a very small percentage that fly wingsuits as their primary activity. At the wingsuit events we tend to see the same faces over and over. Many of us have discussed this topic at wingsuit boogies with all sorts of numbers being thrown out. 200 active wingsuit pilots in the US (IMHO) is likely high. 19. The Brothers Gray Wingsuit Season Opener will be on April 5 & 6 at Skydive Orange in Orange, Va. The focus of this event will be to continue flocking and precision/proximity flying skills development. We will be working on those skills needed to participate in the World Record attempt in November. Organizing will be provided by Scott and Chris Gray, with assistance from Flock U's Justin Shorb. Other members of Flock U will also be attending, as well as potentially some folks from the Z-Flock. There will be a few demo suits available, more details to follow. I will also post more info on evening activities. We do plan to attempt a slot specific 9-way diamond and claim as a Virginia state record. If flying in commercial the closest major airport is Washington Dullus. Skydive Orange Website: http://www.skydiveorange.com/ Directions to the DZ: http://www.skydiveorange.com/Direct.htm Lodging Options: http://www.skydiveorange.com/stayhere.htm ---- the Holiday Inn Express would be my suggestion. 23. We have tested the Optimum reserve as a main and really like it. 300 ft, on heading, butter soft openings. Canopy does sink a little more than say a Sabre 2, but still has good flare. Jury is out on life of the canopy and line set when used as a main.
