  1. Or you're dealing with someone who's been around the internet long enough to remember when people in-lie quoted emails so that context was close to answer. Considering I've been using the internet since the BBS days, I'm sure I remember what was. Just because there is a trend doesn't mean it's a good thing or has a positive effect. The less quote splitting there is the more you can focus on formulating a your argument in an intelligent manner. Speaker's Corner is a perfect example of terrible discussions related to a topic due to quote splitting. Additionally, using text message "lolspeak" further breaks down the intelligent lines of communication. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. Some basic truths on the internet forum discussions: *The more quote splitting in a reply the more effort is being taken to remove context from the initial post. *Opinions are posted as facts. This has become worse as blogs that are in business to spread lies have somehow become a way to prove your point. *ad hominem and strawmans will be used instead of a true debate *Individuals that have "learned" about finance and politics via the media over the last few years actually believe the misinformation that has been handed to them. *The level of true education in a debate is low and thus is damned from the start. *The sound bite wars win out over anything longer than a few seconds. Apparently if you can't win your debate in a matter of seconds with the fewest amount of words you shouldn't try. This tends to mean that this individual is not open to debate or learning. *Even if you put a truth out there, those that are emotionally wrapped up in the discussion will be blinded to in. In fact, it will embolden them to their original malformed talking point. *Hubris, hubris and more hubris. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 3. You still denying that the last recession started under Clinton? The previous recession started March 2001, when Bush was president. No recessions started during the 8 years of the Clinton presidency. www.nber.org/cycles.html 4 of the last 5 recessions started during Republican administrations. 6. Been a geek and a gamer my entire life, got a job in an arcade growing up just so I could play for free. These days I'm all about the PC as most console controller suck. That said, I own a PS3 with about a dozen games and we have a 360 and a Wii in the house as well. Both my PC and Laptop can play any game out there and I tend to play during what most people call TV time. So about 4 or 5 hours a week is all I can get in these days. So I have a few games "in progress." Everything is PC based unless noted *Little Big Planet (PS3) *WoW (80 Prot Warrior - still raid on it) *Bioshock *Fallout 3 *Red Alert 3 *Left 4 Dead (this gets most of my time) *TF2 *COD4 *All the Guitar Hero/Rock Bands (PS3) *World of Goo *Peggle *FEAR 2 *Madden xx (PS3) *Braid *Audiosurf *Spore *UT3 *etc....you get the point Steam with it's weekend sales are the best thing! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 10. Quotes come from the Google News Feed. It's right there whenever I open up firefox via my igoogle. Um, what happened to the big three? All I saw was everyone mocking the teabagging thing everywhere and making fun of how dumb the conservative party has become. You are walking around with blinders if you think any of this had a positive impact anywhere. The message of the day was lost, most people focused on the act of the symbolism instead of what it meant. On top of that every uneducated idiot used this as a way to get their misspelled extremist POV in front of a camera for 2 seconds. I'm starting to believe that Murdoch wants the GOP to fail. I also noticed Kurtz went nuts about how dumb this event was, and he is also another one on the side of FNC. edit: I never know when I am allowed to believe a poll and it's conclusion due to everyone on this forum flip-flopping on that topic. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 11. Actually, for the most part they did. The best part were the idiots in DC that decided to throw a box of teabags over the fence at the White House. Needless to say the SS wasn't amused and moved everyone into the park. The idiots started to complain that Obama was censoring them. Also, there needs to be a spell checker made for posters at these things. It doesn't help when you look like an uneducated mass. From what I can tell, the turnout was good in maybe three cities. Considering this was created and sponsored by what many claim to be the most popular voice of the country, I'd say it was a failure. It seems the GOP have realized this as well, other events from the past week: *Bernard Goldberg breaks bad on Hannity and tells him he is worse than the Liberals were against Bush. This happened live on Fox. *The GOP are concerned the Tea Parties may have polarized a certain population of their voters and exposed them to more Libertarian viewpoints. Because of this they feel that this will cause them to lose more votes in the next two elections. *Congressman Tiahrt(R) has come out and said Rush doesn't represent the GOP and he is only an entertainer. *"If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party," Schmidt declared. "And in a free country, a political party cannot be viable in the long term if it is seen as a sectarian party." -- Steve Schmidt, McCain campaign manager addressing the Log Cabin Republican convention this week. He went into how polarizing topics like Gay Marriage and making a platform based off religious standards will cause the party to die. He also feels that without a major disaster against this country is mishandled by Obama that the GOP cannot defeat him next time. *Michelle Bachman's numbers are dropping drastically and her seat is now considered to be up in the air or strongly leading towards the Dem in the next election. *75% of Texans and the Texas Senate tell Gov Rick Perry he is nuts about succession and the stimulus. This is what happens when your national narrative is one of fear and hyperbole. The GOP is screwed and will lose any relevancy in the next election unless they get back on track. I want a multiple party system in place so I hope they wise up. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 15. This is a real stretch and the source isn't all that reliable of a news source. She indeed did become an option because of her family, but the Dems quickly ditched her when she demonstrated her lack of education and communication skills. This was the Dems version of Palin, but at least they had the knowledge to boot her to the curb instead of spinning things up. Now, you could have made a better point mentioning Giethner and use something like the WSJ instead: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123254915519002447.html Also, your lead in about taxes should have had more too it as well. It sounds too much like you are repeating a conservative talk radio ranting point. Just saying. For instance, making a complaint that if you apologized about your "tax mistakes" it wouldn't be so graciously overlooked. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. This is the third guy from the NSA to come out about this, and the Room 461A that started this all off in 2005 was verified by a Verizon employee that routed the traffic out of that room. The last two whistle blowers from the NSA gave stories on how they listened in to phone sex conversations and would mark the recording so other employees could pull up the file and listen in. None of this is surprising, none of this is new. We knew there was an abuse of power and that the 4th Amendment had been trashed under the guise of security. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 17. It's been talked about for a couple of years, but now we have a college doing a study on it. 18. I'm sure there are some things lost in translation over the web. Don't take it for cocky by any measure and don't think I feel immune either. I don't live in a daydream and I know the realities of life. Yes, I've been tested and I had to protect someone in the process, and someone tried to mug me in college. Also, despite having an uncle that was shot dead in the back for doing so, I've put myself in the middle of drunken bar fights to split them up (protecting friends) and taken my fair share of bumps in fights I've caused during some younger/reckless days (my brother and I put each other in the ER multiple times up to college from fighting - we were quite competitive with each other). Do I expect to win the next time I'm put in a bad spot? I have no idea, I can't plan for such a random occurrence and I have no desire to carry a gun on me at any time out of the slight chance it could happen. But feel free to carry one if you feel otherwise - I've got no problem with that. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 20. I see what you did there. Again, I don't expect you to understand and I think BillVon did a good job of extending your comparison. I could add that I've trained and practiced my EPs with a gun and wouldn't stumble if one was put in my hands. However, there are other options to protect yourself and I prefer those routes. Thus, I know I won't ever need one. Could there be that one random occurrence that I never see coming? Of course, but who says it will be a "bad guy" and not some random space rock that fatally hits me in the head? There is nothing you can do to prepare for such a thing nor could you influence it not to happen. Sometimes the wrong time and the wrong place happen to good people; life is that chaotic by default. You could do everything right and still die. Hrmm...where have I heard that before..... Meanwhile, I'll enjoy life with a better outlook. This is not to say I trust everyone, because I certainly don't and I learned the hard way the assholes will try to bring you down for their own personal gain. I've already missed out on too much in my life due to pain related issues recently. I won't let something beyond my control scare me into living any differently. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 21. The geeks will get this Source: http://www.chromecow.com/2009/01/20/us-democracy-server-patch-day/ US Democracy Server: Patch Day Version 44.0 President * Leadership: Will now scale properly to national crises. Intelligence was not being properly applied. * A bug has been fixed that allowed the President to ignore the effects of debuffs applied by the Legislative classes. * Drain Treasury: There appears to be a bug that allowed loot to be transferred from the treasury to anyone on the President’s friends list, or in the President’s party. We are investigating. * Messages to and from the President will now be correctly saved to the chat log. * Messages originating from the President were being misclassified as originating from The American People. * A rendering error that frequently caused the President to appear wrapped in the American Flag texture has been addressed. Vice President * The Vice President has been correctly reclassified as a pet. * No longer immune to damage from the Legislative and Judicial classes. * The Vice President will no longer aggro on friendly targets. This bug was identified with Ranged Attacks and the Head Shot ability. * Reveal Identity: this debuff will no longer be able to target Covert Operatives. * Messages to and from the Vice President will now be correctly saved to the chat log. * A rendering bug was affecting the Vice President’s visibility, making him virtually invisible to the rest of the server. This has been addressed. Cabinet * There was a bug in the last release that prevented the Cabinet from disagreeing with the President, which was the cause of a number of serious balance issues. This bug has been addressed, and we will continue to monitor the situation. Judiciary * Many concerns have been raised regarding balance issues in the Supreme Court. This system is maintained on a different patch schedule, and will require longer to address. * A large number of NPCs in the Judiciary were incorrectly flagged "ideological." We are trying to identify these cases and rectify this situation. Homeland Security * Homeland Security Advisory System: We have identified a bug in this system that prevents the threat level from dropping below Elevated (Yellow). The code for Guarded (Blue) and Low (Green) has been commented out. We are testing the fix and hope to have it in by the next patch. * Torture: This debuff is being removed after a record number of complaints. * Item: Large Bottle of Water is incorrectly generating threat with TSA Agents when held in inventory. We are looking into the issue. * Asking questions about Homeland Security was incorrectly triggering the Chain-Jingoism debuff. Economy * Serious on-going issues with server economy are still being addressed. We expect further roll-backs, and appreciate your help identifying and fixing bugs. We can’t make these fixes without your help. PVP * Reputation with various factions are being rebalanced. The gradated reputation scale was erroneously being overwritten by the binary For Us/ Against Us flag. Quests * The” Desert Storm” quest chain was displaying an erroneous "Mission Accomplished" message near the beginning of the chain. * The quest chain that begins with “There’s no Cake like Yellow Cake” and terminates with “W-M-Denied” has been identified as uncompletable, and has been removed. Reagents * Many recipes that currently call for Crude Oil can now be made with Wind, Solar, Geothermal and Ethanol reagents. We hope to roll out even more sweeping changes in the next patch. Events * The “Axis of Evil” event is drawing to a close. Look forward to the “Rebuilding Bridges” event starting in January. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 22. Internets are serious business! I don't know how I can get any sleep tonight after having my ass handed to me (sic). If this was any other forum I would post a lolcat as reply because that's really what this deserves (and would make more sense). Sure Mike. You came in at the tail end of something and spouted off something that wasn't even close to current conversation. I don't even think you read all of my posts in this thread. I guess this is where I'm supposed to shut up and let you have the last word so you think you won. Well, I'm going to bed so go ahead and reply to this so you can feel victorious overnight. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 23. Um? Ya, cause it was relevant to the topic about guns? You know, the thing JohnRich pretty much lives to post about? Wooosh. Right over your head. Sorry, I'll try to be more obvious next time. Lame - YOU can lecture about how gunowners must "live in fear" but then whine when the same tactic is used on you? Um, tactic? You are trying to show I have a lack of options and how I should be scared if something happens to my window at 3am? Unless there are smoke and mirrors that I'm missing, I clearly got what you said and was openly mocking your attempt to sway me with your argument. But sure, ya...ok...lame or whatever you said. Oh, ok, I'm scared now! You won me over! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  24. And this is different from YOUR post history constantly bashing Bush, how? And clearly GW is relevant here? I guess this is the new catch phrase/subject I should get used to reading over the next 8 years? Eh, ok, if that's the tradeoff I'm fine with that. Clearly I would break out my WD40 and Duct Tape as DHS told me...oh wait, I think I am starting to get all this fear stuff mixed up. Yea, guess I'm fucked since you clearly know my living situation and all contingencies thus impacted by that. Jesus, how could I have missed that my list stops at option 2. HOLY FUCK now I see it, I guess I do need a gun. Interesting how you see living without fear as morally superior when I see it as a healthy choice of living. To each his own I guess. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  25. I don't think I understand what you're trying to argue here? If one, as you describe, assumes that all things are situational, i.e., there are no dependent variables, wouldn't that argue for or against *any* policy? /Marg I wasn't talking policy. He was trying to prove to me that maybe a big bad something is maybe out to get me and I might need to carry a gun because it it might just help. I try to keep away from policy decisions on things like guns and religion. My views are rather unique and could never fall into any category. Thus, I outright support what exists in the 1st and 2nd. Fear mongers on the other hand.....well, there is more than one way to live your life and many have lived a very happy and peaceful life with and without guns around them. I can accept both as viable ways to live your life. It just astounds me that someone would be so adamant on trying to convert someone to the contrary. John can't even fathom why I know I will never need one. I just find it funny that here I am, a supporter of the 2nd and he considers me "one of them." He doesn't even correctly pick his battles and that is largely due to him being unable to see beyond his nose. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
