  1. Actually, the diamond death spiral has come in quite useful for taking care of problems. Think about it... You have someone (who shall remain nameless and blonde but not Wendy) docking a row 5 wing and wrapping it. If the pilot allows the formation to turn to the heavy side, you keep it from wrapping more. It's flying and scary, but those on the outside wing understand they are dealing with a spiraling diamond and are attempting to do what they can to stop the turn. __________________________________________________ It was pretty impressive to watch! Gives new meaning to "Things do revolve around me!" Eh, Cheryl CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  2. You mean you're just sliding down the lines till you hit the top of the slider and staying there till the poeople above have rotated, then sliding back up yourself? __________________________________________________ I, myself, don't slide down the lines. I take the dock presented and deal with it. If it's a riser dock, I'll grab a center A line (I prefer both but, Hey, whatever I can get), lift my feet a little (above the slider) and hold it there, if it's at my waist I'll hold it there. IMHO, the more you go up OR down just makes it harder for the person docking. __________________________________________________ Do you not have problems with your backpack catching on the canopy when you slide up again before leaving? __________________________________________________ If I'm doing rot's, I leave my riser covers closed and lay my risers over them. As I'm sliding up to pilot I use kleggo's technique, elbows, head, etc. Remember, sliding up to pilot, be gentle don't stab the brakes. Gentle, otherwize you pull the formation up and make #4 look bad CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  3. Looks like it could be a 28' Lo-Po with a 7-TU mod. Do you have a photo of the I.D. panel? CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  4. Remko, That should be required reading all CRW Pups. You explaned many things very well. However, I must respectfully disagree on the links. I wear weights under my 160 (Lightning) simply because I weigh too little for it. I'm in that "grey" zone, too much for my 143, too little for my 160. I think adding links (except for Wendy) is sort of like looking for a crutch. Learn to fly your canopy! If you're floaty, learn to work from the bottom of the formation. If you're sinky, fly from the top. Slow, stay in front (ok, always stay in front). My opinion is, if you are looking for a "perfect" mechinical advantage, you will never find it. You will just keep looking for a more "prefect" fix for any given situtation. In my opinion, learn to fly your canopy, find out what works and what doesn't. Adjust from there. You're in Fallbrook, just a short piece from Perris, which is where us Dawgs jump in So.Cal. PM me FMI CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  6. Can you get that name by the censors? They made us change the name of our 8 way speed (CRW) team from "Kenny 8 'er" to "Kenny's 8" Just didn't have the same feel to it CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  7. I'm sure you've checked, but has the kill line shrunk a little? CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  8. I did it on a few of my rigs back in the late 70's- early 80's. A couple of Strato-Stars and a Strato-Cloud. All three used 10" risers. Back then we were trying to cut down on weight...ANY weight! Then again, we were all falling belly to earth and little things like lines slapping us in the head in freefall didn't seem like such a big deal! CRW Skies Frank CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  9. Congratulations Nina! CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  10. Small rings are all I use when I build CRW risers type 8 or type 17 webbing. With all of the swapping of gear that goes on it only makes sense. You can put small ring risers on a big ring harness, but not the other way around. CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  11. I don't think it was a redhead. I do remember Sandy talked to Fran for a minute about "Instead of one for an hour, how about two for a half hour?" Fran said OK. She takes one tall lithe woman by the hand, then looks at this TALL negro beauty with the other hand and starts heading to the back of the house. She stopped and looked at Fran, pointed to her boyfriend and said something like "I want him to watch what he's missing" Fran laughed and said go ahead. My poor little 21 year old brain was on overload about that time! CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  12. That was a great meet! We flew Spike's Beech from Taft, put together a 10 man and watched a Beech buzz the runway. I remember thinking "Boy, Spike sure got down fast", then a longgg cloud of dust and the Beech 90 degrees to line of flight. We landed close by, and the 2 female type passangers get out laughing, asking "Can we do that again!?" I think that Beech was from Yolo or Pope Valley. Norm Van Pelt bought me my 21st birthday present there. No, it wasn't a t-shirt CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  13. Hey Sparky, The date of the B-25 jump was 13 May '78. I've got another picture I'll get scanned one of these days. So Norm and Patty got married, and my "Evil Big Brother" (Norm) didn't let me know! I'll have to call and congratulate him. I started jumping when I was 16. Norm and Richard Armstrong took me under their wing to teach me RW. My Mom used to bake Norm cookies just so he wouldn't bounce me! Guess it worked in spite of myself! CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  14. Well, the way Pete tells it, he pulled at his legal opening altitude. Has a malfunction that he thinks he can clear. Chops it, pulls reserve, gets line stretch, does a PLF. Donna Wardean said she couldn't see the PLF for the cloud of dust, she knew he bounced. I saw Pete about two weeks after that, he was black and blue (mostly black) from the back of his heels to the top of his head. Just a hair line crack in some bone in his back. Tough old dude! 15. Among other things, Pete has always been into international skydives. I think (the brain cells ain't what they used to be) he put together the first international 10 way (10 jumpers, 10 different countries represented) in '72 or '73. When I saw him a few months ago he was trying to put together an international hybrid dive. Yea, Pete has been jumping since before dirt was invented. He is probably the only guy I know that has gone in, lived to tell about it , and didn't even break anything!!! CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  16. No Sparky I'm not. Some of the people in the photo are: kneeling right Mike Tulysuski, kneeling left Jimmy Tyler(?). Standing 5th from right Jim Stinson, 8th from right Mike McFarlin(?). Some of the other faces I know, the names are WAY too many brain cells ago CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  17. Yea, I remember jumping "The Shady Lady" I was in the load that took off from Shafter (where the plane was from) to Taft. There were 6 of us stuffed in the radioman's compartment, right behind the pilot and co-pilot. Everybody else is in the back or the bomb bay. The pilot tries to start No. 1, it caughs, sputters, caughs, sputters and stops. The co-pilot turns around and looks at us and says "We've been having a little trouble with No.1" We look at each other, shrug, and figure so what, it has 2 engines. Get No.1 started, damn it's hot in this little compartment. Try and start No.2, same as No.1, caugh, sputter...... The co-pilot again turns around and says "Yea, we've been having a little trouble with No.2 too". We did a quick count and came up with, you guessed it, we only have 2 engines and they've been having a "little" trouble with both!!! About that time some of us were wishing we would have stuck with jumping his BT-13. That only has one engine, but at least it runs. Dwight (the pilot) got things squared away and off we went. The backfire on take rotation really got our attention tho CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  18. Yea Lori, nice "first" pin on Brett Clark too! Guess you'll be buying beer on the installment plan for a while ! CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  19. Hey Lori, No, I didn't forget. PM me, I lost your adress CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  20. Hate to be the barer of bad news, but Eddie went to the other side 31 July 2002 after a bout with cancer. We did his ash dive 26 October, which was also the 20th anniversary of Spike's plane crash. In the star were, Brian Fairhurst, Lyle Cameron Jr., Norm Van Pelt, Bob Butt, Frank Lupica, Dave Crouch, and Danny Haden, and Eddie in the bag. Nice eight way for Eddie's last jump. 22. I modified a Para Plane to a slider after my first jump, and malfunction, on one. All I did was take off all the shrink wraps, and all the tape EXCEPT on the nose and tail. I don't remember what size slider I used, but I think one for a RavenIII might work. I packed it into a Strato Star bag (they said it wouldn't fit, what do old guys know?). I went up to 2500 for some accuracy, three seconds later I pull and watch the looong lines unstow, my two MA-1's fully inflated, then everything stopped. Inflated pilotchutes, line strech, baglock. Cutaway, dump my bellywart. Watched this thing sail past me 'til it hit the ground, then the bag exploded open. I didn't think about it having to come back out when I stuffed it in the bag. 23. Line trim A for formations, general all around crw. Line trim B for serious rotations. If you have trim A, you can add a link to the front for serious rots. The cotton buffer helps prevent the three rings on the top from damaging the top skin. Leaving the three rings sticking out of your container will do the same thing. 24. I use the altimaster. I just don't trust things that need batteries. Let's face it, when was the last time you picked up a flashlight that didn't work? Blue skies Frank CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
  25. Yes I have a RSL on my rigs. They are disconnected. I have had about 15 cut aways since I started jumping in 1972. The only reason I have them now is to use as a "last hope rope" as on the old Crossbows. And my Crossbow has a Stevens (early RSL) I have that disconnected too. CRW Skies Frank CRW Diva #58
