You are getting some really excellent advice here. Most any DZ with an instructor can teach you how to skydive. You really just need to check out the DZ and see if it makes you feel comfortable. And the worse part of this is that Jet A is supposedly in SHORT SUPPLY. That will drive the cost of everything, including jump tickets, UP UP UP. . . Hey Dave, you two will absolutely love both dropzones. Elsinore is very 4-way friendly and has a nice vibe. There is a LO available on weekends and they have the ExCel Skills Camp available for getting to know folks who love RW. Perris is a big DZ that is always got something going on. Because of the shear size of the place it is a little bit more difficult to get to know people, but don't let that intimidate you. Just get in there and meet people. Also, hanging out after hours at the bombshelter (full service bar and grill) at Perris or the Tiki Bar (byob to share) at Elsinore is a great way to meet more people. The time of year you are coming is right after the Nationals. Most of the competition 4-way people will be looking to have some relaxing fun jumps at that time rather than training so it will be a great time to be local. As for tunnel time, you want to get in the tunnel with a coach to maximize your time there. Call the tunnel directly and tell them what you are looking for. They can hook you up. The phone numbers are on the Perris site. And regarding canopy coaching. . .both DZ's offer canopy coaching. However, I am only familiar with Elsinore's canopy school. . .Flight-1. Jonathan Tagle, from the PD Team and a PST gold medal winner, is an instructor there. With either DZ you will have no shortage of jumps and instruction in anything you like. At Elsinore, they have a ground school for wanna be camera flyers. . .After the class, the flyers are encouraged to "volunteer" their camera time with the ExCel skills camp to gain practical experience. It gives the camera guys some experience and the camp gets some great training videos. I am planning on being there Sunday, but not sure if I can get out there. I NEED to get out there as I need to drop off my rig at the loft for a repack. So, my plan is to work it out somehow. . . I, as a woman, am actually appauled at the way some women dress these days. I have a very strict rule for myself. . .if I see the slightest hint of a roll, its too tight. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with a person's class either. I see the same rolls EVERYWHERE. . .WalMart, Nordstrom (very upscale department store), the Theater, etc. I am really not sure what people are thinking. If its relaxing at the beach and walking around the shops, my choice would be Laguna Beach. Although the boardwalk at Newport is nice too. Really depends on what you want to do. . .If your in LA and want to do the beach thing, I recommend the pier at Redondo Beach. I don't think it can necessarily be based on jump numbers. For instance if you put in 200 jumps in a year, then you are jumping consistently and probably getting really good at what you do. If you put in 200 jumps in say 3 years, you are not consistent and would probably not be progressing as well as others. I have nearly 200 jumps and was very consistent my first year. I had confidence and felt much better in the sky than I do now. I don't jump very often right now (school and work constraints), and I feel the difference completely. I feel more like a newbie now than I did at 100 jumps. . .Just my 2 cents. . . I don't really think of it as that. . .more like protecting the order and kind of an Obi Wan Kenobi bit, that in death he will be even stronger than he was in real life. . .ageless perhaps. . .remember it did say that his portrait now hangs beside the others in the Headmaster's office at Hogwarts. . .and you know all those old headmasters provide Dumbledore with more help than I think any of us realize.
