  1. answer to question #1, yes your question makes total sense...I've flown a few VX's answer to question #2. Yes.... get a Velo- You'll never be disappointed. The JVX flies nice, I haven't seen a factory VX with a JVX linese, but I've seen a x-mod (xaos VX) fly. Still not as good as a velo. -Dan #2 overall PST advanced cometitor, 2003
  2. Just to clarify from a previous post: Oregon and Washington are WEST of all the other locations listed except for Hawaii. We who come from the "Northeast" will coming from Oregon and Washington...
  3. That's true, I am flying a Velo, it'll be for sale along with all of my other gear after the last comp... I really like the canopy, but the colors aren't what I want to keep for ever, ya know? I threw 630's on both rounds of the swoop comp I was asked me to organize for the all-inclusive boogie @ SDO (where the hell were you on that one?), I just neet to practice a couple more of them and then that move will be competition ready.
  4. I say the last comp at SDO should be six rounds of in-lane carving (water displacement like at the Ranch meet) Have you ever tried this? It's REALLY difficult but it's kick-ass when you get it right. I'll be doing 630 degree turns for the last comp, just for kicks...not on all the rounds, you know just mixin -em in when it feels right
  5. there was a 3 way tie for first so it came down to the distance scores...AGAIN we need more rounds per category(event), back when the PST was in version 1.0 the advanced guys, like me, had to buy helicopter tickets for three rounds per event....why the hell are we only doing two rounds per event?
  6. I work until 5:30 on Wed, so We're gonna be there @ about the same time, I hope the winds are better. I'm gonna hook up some more Moto-style armor I think... So you goin to Snoho? Any other SDO Cats?
  7. The dirt is out baby, all out... That was more of a battle than I ever had to put on, man, crazy wind to hill angles. I'm going again Wed. with Steve and another cat from out of town. Gimme a jingle if you want to take another whack at it. That's cool you're goin' for AFF. I have a lot of respect for those guys. That will be a good way to get canopy time, too.
  8. I'd love to as soon as I get a few on my new canopy, I should have my stuff in about 4 weeks. After that I'm all over it -depending on the object... Are you talkin Earth or Span?
  9. Well, Tom? Do you want to answer that or should I?
  10. No. I knew some of the rest of the Oregon base crew 4 yrs ago, from the dropzone. He didn't give me the 'vacation line' that is sometimes used with new jumpers in our area. I've actually waited an entire season to make BASE #1. 2 different people have offered to put me off the A I mentioned earlier, but I refused. When the decision to start BASE jumping, I bought quality gear (www.baserigs.com) and then told Ray it would be great if he could show me a few things. I've been really scared about it for a month or so, so when I was on the other side of the rail making #1, I was pretty calm. (Edited last paragraph for clarity)
  11. yes this was a span, so "S" for those of you who didn't understand what I intended, sorry for the typo- I will NOT be asking for 500 foot passes, maybee 1500 for some terminal deployment practice...I've got a 900 and something ft A in my backyard
  12. Those of you in the Pacific NW know who Ray is. Ray put me off for my first 9 (nine) base jumps off of a western us "B" this weekend. Kick ass- I felt totally scared on the first one but never unsafe or unprepared for anything...My background: 2000-odd skydives, tandem instructor, rigger with about 30 helicopter and 3 balloon jumps. The object is well known 486ft or so over a river. #1) stowed. Slider down on one of his six rigs a velco container and a Fox Vtek. The winds were strong but I was well loaded. Good exit, deployment and landing. #2) stowed again. slider down again, different canopy slightly smaller and unvented. 40-45 deg off heading (left) after a head-high but uneventful exit. I was slow getting to my inputs and landed 2-3 feet off shore in waist high water. OK jump-needed improvement. 3#)same rig, much better exit and deployment (handheld this time)-I flew the canopy on rears after unstowing the brakes and swooped just onto the shore-winds were 12-15. Good. #'s 4-8) were all solid, good feeling jumps(all stowed and slider down- I only stood up two landings, the winds were nill @ the bottom and I was workin' the PLF. All deplyments were pretty much right on heading. #9) I wanted to do a slider up and learn to tie a static-line so I could put myself off things, but not necessarily on the same jump. Ray said slider up static would be ok on this object so I hucked it. My plan was to fly the rear risers through the slow deployment and then go to toggles once it inflated fully and the slider came down. Nope-not a good idea I should have listened and gone straight to toggles because; as I was correcting the sniveling canopy just under the span, with the left rear riser it opened into a bow-tie stall. Shit. I immediately dropped the rear riser and unstowed the brakes, making a 180 toward the large landing area in the process. If there was wind I would have been landing downwind in the middle of the the area. Because the wind @ the bottom was 0-2 I just made it over the ditch. Ray's pilot chute was in a tree- no major damage I don't think. I was fine, I thought I had a chance to stand it up so I didn't PLF, my bum's a little sore because I didn't roll the landing out. I'm ready to start learning some more cool stuff now.
  13. Hey Jeffe- If you keep improving you'll be good enough to compete under yer veng. or velo THIS season- there's a couple other guy's at SDO in the same boat. Keep doin' the hop and pops. If a person were to have made the gates cleanly on every run at this last comp, even flying a 9-cell, they would have had 3rd or maybee 2nd all wrapped up... Just somethin' to think about. Swoop meets are more about accuracy than most people think.
  14. You made it look like I got last because you cut the list to the top 5 finsihers... ...no soup for you, either of you
  15. www.veloctiyrigs.com try sending an e-mail maybee, they may have been experimenting with a design...
  16. I have a singer 212 (self-oiling) www.miamisewing.com I called 'em up and ordered a 112 and the guy said that for the same price he'd sell me a 212 because he would have to re-finish the 112's. I got a great deal on it... I don't have the binder attachment permanently installed yet but a friend of mine who builds base rigs has the right-angle binder on his 112. Can't go wrong with either the 112 or the 212 I don't think.
  17. I totally agree with the last post, it makes sense to me, and I think I've seen it in action by some of the PRO Pilots as well. I personally get the feeling every once in a while, just before I get to gate level that I'm almost speeding up. The rear risers require a little more of a nudge than usual. If I'm over water I can let up on the rears and drag the surface, but if over dry ground what happens is I'll gain 2 or 3 feet of altitude and have a clearly better than average distance run, for me (a mere mortal) that's anything beyond the 300ft marker-xaos [email protected]. There is something that is going on now at the record breaking level that is allowing HUGE distances. Downwind doesn't hurt but the recent record breakers, JC and the PD guys are clearly playing a different game now. Also, I've flown at 2.5 lb/ft and frankly I don't like it much...the higher loading may add some other part to the whole deal that wasn't considered say, two years ago. 18. Bump... Count me in, I'll do what I can to send judges your way soon- -Dan
  19. See you then, are you gonna hang out and jump all weekend? Hey stu if you want to swoop the pond you should bring a change of dry clothes...it's been chilly up here. You don't wanna walk around with wet clothes all day, he he. Who knows maybee you'll end up showing me a thing or two. Either way -let's tear it up the swoopers haven't really been out in force yet this year.
  20. damn son, on a monday night??!! what are they doin to you down there that's driving you to drinking you poor bastard?
  21. nice work stu! Let me know as soon as the corn around the Creswell Swoop pond is harvested. That way we can get back on it. Are you guys swooping that thing anymore?
  22. rears on a 27 cell I don't remember, on a 21-similar. Not "heavy" buy absolutely heavier than a VX xaos 21-125 is my current canopy and I demo'd a velo 120 this weekend for about 5 jumps
  23. heavier than on a vx (the fronts are way lighter)-same with the 27cell xaos. the rears are fairly similar to a velocity, very powerful and responsive. I think the input pressure on the xoas line of canopies is ideal for competition swooping-especially rears. The vx is so light that stalling the canopy is much easer- the xaos will shout "hey go to toggles stupid!" before it stalls.
  24. my xoas 21 flies pretty flat, but I have to give it a lot of riser input. I have a 125 loaded at 2.05. I can out-drive any non-crossed braced. Definitely flatter than a velo, but not as flat as the 27cells that are out there.
