  1. The same could be said for Sandusky Ohio. Further away from Chicago but would also pull in more from OH/PA/NY/Canada.
  2. I have it here in Richmond, VA and love it. Consistently get faster upload and download speeds than the package I signed up for.
  3. The swoop to dock skill is usually broken up into 2 jumps but like Dave said, each DZ can teach it differently. The basic concept is... The first jump will be more like a stair step movement so you will speed up, go to neutral then go forward and go to neutral. Repeat. You should try to end up on level with your coach and 5-10 feet away and then do a final forward motion to dock. On the second jump you smooth those two movements into one. Just remember you need to stop the down and forward motions before you dock so you don't overshoot your coach or plow into him. As with all other advice on here be sure to talk to your instructor (or coach). Good luck.
  4. You don't mention what country you jump in so most posters are assuming you jump in the US. In the US we are under VFR (visual flight rules) which means you legally are not allowed to fly into or through a cloud and must adhere to certain cloud clearances. If you jump in another country the cloud restrictions are likely different than in the US. Talk to your instructors. Either way, by the time you get to solo jumps you should have learned about cloud clearances (if they apply to your country) and what to do if you do get into a cloud.
  5. Each country has their own governing body for skydiving so the rules will be different. You can check out the Australian Parachute Federations website to see if they recognize licenses from other countries. From the APF Operational Regulations.. Eligibility for Descents A visitor who holds a valid parachuting licence issued by an FAI member may make descents only after: (a) Taking out short-term membership or full membership of the APF; and (b) A Chief Instructor has assessed the visitor’s experience and competence and has written in the visitor’s log the level of APF privileges that the visitor may exercise
  6. +1 He had plenty of outs and didn't need to make it back to that landing area, especially since he didn't even film the tandem landing.
  7. Are you refering to the landing pattern the video guy flew?
  8. Many DZs do this. What specific information are you looking for?
  9. As others have said, wait until you get your license and get 25-50 more jumps under your belt before you worry about buying a rig. One reason is that the DZ where you do your training will most likely not let you use your own gear until you have your A license because student rigs have some additional features sport rigs don't. Another reason to wait is that you'll most likely downsize several canopy sizes during your training and shortly after you get your license.
  10. It's on the front page of msn.com now.
  11. just for fun reading here are Katies comments on that article... - Katie, US, 25/5/2012 10:23 "You all clearly do NOT understand the physics at work here. Once in the plane, you MUST jump. The airplane makes a near vertical dive to land safely and get out of the way before the skydivers land on the SAME runway. It is not safe to stay in the plane. You would be seriously injured. He was not being cruel, he was trying to save her. Tandem divers are warned of this repeatedly, you are asked time and again if you are sure, because you can not ride back in the plane. They tell you they will literally shove you out the door to save your life. " - Katie, US, 25/5/2012 10:51 "So it must be a 'drone' then? If it were 'not safe to stay in the plane', how come the pilot usually survives the trip? - Karen, UK, 25/5/2012 10:33 -------- The pilot is strapped in to ensure he does not suffer ill effects from the amount of G-forces pulled in order to get back to the ground, additionally many of the planes aren't equipped with more than enough fuel to go back and land, flying around for the 40+ minutes it would have required to wait for everyone else to land first likely wasn't an option. There is no other way to say this. No one else is allowed to ride back in the plane. This is a highly regulated industry. If you want to worry about something, worry about why the straps holding her in didn't' work. Shoving her out of a plane was a necessity."
  12. Yep, that's the one. Apparently our planes land themselves because it's too dangerous to stay in the plane because it has to make a near vert dive to get to the ground and land on the runway before the jumpers do. Guess our pilots only get to fly one load before they are are seriously injured and have to be replaced.
  13. Did everyone see the stupid explaination given by Katie in the comments of the news story?
  14. Something as small as being a little pigeon toed can cause that slight turn. I had the same problem when I was doing my AFF. I repeated Cat C-1 4 times and we just couldn't figure out what was causing the turn. I went to the wind tunnel and the tunnel instructor identified the problem almost immediately and I had it fixed in less than 10 minutes. Also, tensing up anything can cause unintended turns. If you tense up one hand you can feel how that in turn makes that whole side of your body tense. You'll figure it out. Good luck and remember to relax.
  15. With Sandusky becoming more of a year round resort area with the indoor water parks I think a tunnel would work well in the area. Cedar Fair....are you listening?
  16. How about paying for the extra staff it's going to take to make things run smoothly?
  17. Talk to your instructors. They will be able to give you better advice since they know you're abilities better than someone on the internet.
  18. Seems like a pretty simple solution. Instructional ratings are already handled like endorsements so this shouldn't be that hard to implement on USPA's end. This idea would also lend itself to a wingsuit endorsement.
  19. Looks like iFly wants to build a couple of tunnels in the DC area. http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/capitalbusiness/indoor-skydiving-outfit-leaping-into-washington-market/2012/02/29/gIQAwhwrqR_story.html
  20. Virginia Skydiving Center is having one March 23-25. http://www.virginiaskydivingcenter.com/
  21. The student was doing as they were trained. If you can't deploy your main, deploy your reserve. The "coach" should have let the student deploy their reserve. What happens if this student has the same problem but with a "coach" who is not an AFFI? Will they wait for the coach to deploy for them?
  22. Glad to see this in this forum and not the incidents Kelly. Curtis
  23. I would be very careful recommending this because this can easy lead to target fixation. The way I have always heard it explained is to "look out at the horizon" not specifically at a single object.
  24. Yes, sorry replied to the wrong post. That statement was directed at the original poster. So to clarify... tws3998...If the jump numbers in your profile is up to date (hell even if you have many more jumps than that) do yourself a favor and read through the threads on here about Sangi.
  25. Can I buy my bounce bingo ticket now please? I'd like to beat the rush. All joking aside... If the jump numbers in your profile is up to date (hell even if you have many more jumps than that) do yourself a favor and read through the threads on here about Sangi.
