  1. Dude, you need serious help. Its a good thing that guy took your parachute. He is right. Otherwise you may have actually jumped off something.....you could die man. Im thinking house arrest may be best for a while. Its dangerous on the street. Your life is too precious and I for one do not want to see something happen to you just because you wanted to have fun. I think the best thing for you to do now is tell the Federal Psychological Evaluator that you were planning on doing a complicated advanced aerial maneuver from the crane and that is why you had the parachute. Hey Bryan, That was such a treat to get to talk to you last Sunday. I was hanging out with a skydiver in the backyard and Marcia walks up with the phone and it was you. Remeber my first question...are you home dude? Then when you said you were still in Iraq it blew me away. Great phone connection too...it sounded like you were right there. Take care of yourself bro, and try not to think about the heat too much (like thats possible....125 degrees). Im thinking about going to the turkey boogie so I can make some jumps with you when you get home (before you get all caught up in chopper school). And remember, the for-sure-toggle-grab is the way to go if youre good enough. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]
  4. I think option (a) would be redundant info since you will hear and understand the beet rate changing and how fast it changes. For option (b), you might want three tones (+, 0, -). That way if youre maintaining a glide angle (if just for a few seconds) you still hear a tone with the beep rate report to indicate how well youre doing. base736, You do have a point in that you wont know exactly what the glide angle is. But I think after using the device enough times you will become acclimated to it enough to understand and remember what the different tones and beep rates mean to you dive after dive. I say this because with my experience using a vario in a hang gliding environment - at first with a new vario I would find myself looking at the visual report to see what the climb/descent rate is with what I was hearing. But it doesnt take long to know your climb rate by listening to the beeping without having to look. Your post gave me an idea, maybe the device could store the glide angles throughout the dive (and maybe playback the tones it produced with the glides angles it stored) so you can study it after you land. I think after doing that enough times you would start to get a feel for approximately what the glide angles are for the different tones and beeps rates. Still, I agree that knowing the exact glide angle in freefall would be ideal. Also I think maybe the tones could produce more of an instant feedback since a beep takes less time then saying the glide angle; maybe it wouldnt matter that much anyway though. One more thing I have been pondering is the wind factor. I dont even know what to say about it or if it should even be considered. I can see you having a great tracking body position, but with a steep glide angle due to a headwind or vise-versa having a poor tracking position with a shallower glide angle than normal due to a tailwind. Maybe you would just have to know what the winds are doing and take that into account. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]
  5. I consider myself to be pretty darn stealthy. I hear what youre saying Ray - something to definitely point out. But sometimes you need to be super quiet; like when youre going past a floor where you can hear the workers just around the corner. I find that holding onto the railing can help you literally be as quiet as a mouse through each step. When youre that quiet you can hear every little noise in the stairwell, meaning you can hear when other people are in the stairwell and then yes you definitely want to stay back from the center railing. Dude, you would have loved and hated the approach on this 45 story building we did not to long ago. I kid you not, there were workers on every other floor until about the 30th floor. They were so close to the stairwell we were in enough times that I opted to switch stairwells at about the 15th floor. You know what I mean bro, when you can hear every beat of your heart and your wondering if they can hear it to. And then theres the controlled breathing that must be done. That was the only flick we got off that one so it was all worth it. Sweet jump too. I used to be concerned about prints in sites like that, but there are so many workers that go through there and the nature of it wouldnt warrant them trying to narrow down your prints. However, in a finished, occupied B, I still wipe doorknobs off with my shirt or just use the palm of my hand. To be James Bond, you must think like James Bond. Have Fun, Don't Die! 6. Cool idea Michael. Ive been a hang glider pilot since 1987 so I have a lot a flight time with a vario. It sounds like there are some similarities between a vario and the instrument that youre working on but I think there are some differences. Im not that familiar with the latest and greatest varios on the market which have additional instruments such as glide angle and GPS, but the vario I have has a visual display (like in an airplane) and an audible beeping indicating the climb rate (with a happy tone) or descent rate (with a different bad tone). Like veter_ said, the tone beeps faster as the vertical speed increases either up or down. For it to mean something accurate and useful to the pilot it has a starting point of 0 which is a vertical speed up or down of 0 (maintaining the same altitude). You calibrate it to the current barometric pressure on the ground before you launch to obtain the starting point. There is an error factor, which is any barometric pressure change as you move through the airspace or as the barometric pressure changes throughout the day. For your device to work like a vario (not the glide angle or gps report), I would think it would need a similar starting point such as a certain glide angle and then give the pilot different tones and beep rates as your glide angle becomes shallower or steeper from the starting glide angle. The problem I see with that is how do you determine the starting glide angle and how would that apply from pilot to pilot? Keep in mind Im just brainstorming here. If I understand what your aiming at correctly.......Are you simply calculating the altitude lost by distance gained during a time cycle and reporting the glide angle with one of a series of numbers; each number indicating a different glide angle? Maybe it could have the beep rate increase as the glide angle became shallower. Falling straight down would report no beep and a shallow glide angle beeping like crazy with a happy tone - in hang gliding using a vario, this kind of audible report means you have a killer climb rate, which is a good thing (unless your standing on your wingtip and its off the chart and youre approaching the cloud base ). One thought comes to mind. If you turn during your flight, maybe your device could detect that right away with the gps data so that it would still give you a good glide angle report immediately following (or during) the turn. You probably already have that figured out. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]
  7. Thanks Kevin I remember when Seth told me that story. I think you told it to me as well. Brings back really good memories brother. Thats the tower that fell....right? Seth allways had the best one-liners.
  8. A good choice is the Havly Hotell in Stavanger. Its about $100 US if I remember right but Ive been told thats inexpensive for that town. Its close to where you catch the ferry and yes there is a decent night life with several cool clubs about 100 yards away. Information is here. Have Fun, Don't Die! 14. Actually my post was totally related to the discussion in the ABP thread as I was replying to a point that Tree made as he was replying to a point that skypuppy was making as a concern about rules in the parks. About your story….total crap. I came to your house because you invited me during a phone call. I came as a gesture of good will. What did I do to offend your wife? Thats ridiculous!!!! Youre the one telling lies Tom. If I didnt want someone to come to my home, I would just tell them so. I wouldn’t make lame threats like that. But I guess that’s just how you operate. BTW – you lied about why you made the threat. It was because you were flaming the hell out of Miles and I called you on it. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]
  15. Hmmm. Who is this mystery person? Can you prove your claim? Or are you just making that up? Just for factual info, the only person who has approached law enforcement on this issue is (drum roll, please), Miles Daisher. Nice lies, Johnny. I love you too. You posted your threat on this forum and then deleted it a day later. Would you like me to re-post it for you? Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]

  19. My reply was: I can think of ONE BASE jumper who has threatened to call the cops on another BASE jumper for no good reason whatsoever. His first name starts with T and his last name starts with A and he lives in Twin Falls. I agree with you on this point Tree...its pretty lame. edit for thread name ~TA Tom A split my post to a new thread for his own political reasoning. btw-he promised in the past that he would not split threads anymore without the consent of the posts author. 20. skyglider, Just so you know, my post was not directed at you at all. I read Skins post as being directed at the general state of affair around here lately. Also, I had no problem with your original post. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]
  21. Damn that was a good post Skin!!! Just reading along and then oh gee, whats this load of crap asserted as if its true. No. What a ridiculous thing to say. BASE jumpers who make a living in the sport of BASE do so because they love it that much. There is no divide there. If there is a divide, surely it is between people who think like that and those who dont. And then once in a while you get someone who hasnt even BASE jumped posting his opinion in every thread about how things should be in BASE. Sometimes you just wanna puke. Have Fun, Don't Die! 22. I mentioned the use of a sleeve in another thread. The bridle goes through a grommet in the sleeve and attaches to the canopy (like with a d-bag). It can be designed to fit the pack tray and the lines stow similar to a free-bag. I think the biggest benefit for using it is at terminal airspeeds as it preserves the pack job until full line-stretch, which is when the canopy is extracted from the sleeve. I can see how this may reduce the chance of a tension knot or maybe even a line-over. Then again, it is one more component to the system. The chance of a bag-lock would be similar to having a bag-lock with a skydiving reserve. The other benefit is that the sleeve slides down the bridle to the PC and envelops the PC…..less drag. I personally dont use a sleeve. Not because I dont like the concept, but because Ive been satisfied without one. I do appreciate simplicity in my BASE gear. Have Fun, Don't Die! 23. One thing I really like to see is when I run into BASE jumpers who were taught by someone that I taught. And those who were taught by someone who was taught by someone who was taught by me, etc. It goes back ten years in some cases. Kind of like a family tree. Ive had students of my students call me grandfather and greatgrandfather as I guess they see it that way. Its neat to see how the tree grows.
  24. I agree Its called a sleeve. Its similar to a reserve free bag in the sense of how the lines are stowed. After opening, it travels down the bridle and covers the PC. Of course it is possible to BASE jump successfully with a kill line PC, but IMHO it is a bad idea. These types of pilot chutes do have problems from time to time in the skydiving environment. The difference is in skydiving you have a reserve with altitude to use it. Have Fun, Don't Die! Johnny Utah My Website email:[email protected]
  25. Yes! Thanks TB, for articulating those two points so well.
