  1. Yah, you should at least go tandem once or twice! If you really wanna understand this and why he does it, what better way?! Besides, it's more fun being on the plane with a scared tandemee (yes, I know I only have 3 jumps, but the latest one had me on the plane with a first-time tandem goer, and the conversation between her, myself, and my instructors, was entertaining)
  2. Howdy, I just failed my level 3 yesterday morning
  3. Well, I practically had the same problem as Cindee, only my legs weren't turning me so hard that I couldn't fight them with my arm. I don't mind though, I know I'll do fine next time. And Cindee, yowch :(
  4. http://itg1.meteor.wisc.edu/wxwise/museum/a8/a8cloudclass.html Nifty clouds
  5. Well, thanks for the consolation! I'm not too bummed about not passing, another student who was in my FJC did 3 thrice, and another did 4 thrice, so it's all good. I just gotta pay again>_<
  6. Mine have been great so far. Like everyone else says, your senses kinda get overloaded on the first jump(though my AFF1 was my FIRST jump, and first time on an airplane
  7. Level 3 was a pretty good skydive, looking at it wholistically, I guess. Didn't tumble(as much)on the exit, actually got a thumbs up from one of the instructors as my first hand signal(yayy)got the two practice pulls, then they let me go to see if I could maintain a heading. As they put it, I got kinda twitchy in trying to turn with my arms, and although I clearly had a heading and was trying to maintain it, once I started turning to correct, one of my legs went kinda funky, and kept me locked in a perpetual drift that I was perpetually correcting, so they could never really leave me completely untouched for terribly long, so they're gonna have me do 3 again. Oh well, now I've gotta feel for it:) Except I left my mouth hanging open again so my throat is dry >_<
  8. Here's a semi-related question, if someone wanted to START a skydiving society at their university, how would they go about doing that?
  9. Why are tandem fatality rates worse for the instructor?
  10. See, in a vacuum, everything would fall at the same speed, regardless of anything. Throw in an atmosphere and air with an actual density that you have to travel to, then you get wind resistance, and that's as far as my mind usually took it. Things that presented a larger profile to the wind would go slower 'cuz of increased drag. Well, apparently that's all good and well except there's also terminal velocity, which means something with a greater mass, though having more drag, has a higher top attainable speed than something smaller. Which is why my 5'5ish 130 pound frame gets stuffed into the tightest jumpsuit my sadist/instructors can find! To reduce drag to offset the fact that I won't fall as fast. Or something like that, I really dunno.
  11. Anvils are heavy and fall fast. His home is earth. Home-sick implies he's gonna be getting back to earth in a damned hurry. Someone who is 300 pounds has a much higher terminal velocity than the overwhelming majority of us, so thus he falls to the earth(his home) faster, hence the "home-sick" statement. Excuse my completely deadpan and probably needlessly detailed response, but I'm a physics major. Not necessarily an experienced physics major(I'm 18, woo)so if that's incorrect, correct me by all means. All I know about terminal velocity I learned at a DZ:)
  12. Serious answer in the event of a double-mal: Claw like a madman at my rig and yank anything that seems yankable, if the reserve came out but was streaming or something, I'd be pulling strings like a puppeteer Non-serious answer: Depending on my mood either go in head first to make the biggest mess(I should make a will requesting that if that happened that my rigger has to do clean-up:))Or just go in stable and wave at someone right before impact to scar them for life
  13. Are you even getting charged extra? I'd think the larger equipment would cost more, but I'm just curious...
  14. -_- http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX1459?lswe=whitewright&lswa=WeatherLocalUndeclared&whatprefs= Guess which day I'm going!
  15. Hey, good news guys! I just remembered I have this trombone I used to play in high school that I haven't touched since, and have no intention of touching. I've been meaning to get around to selling it, but now might be a good time, as all the money could go to my skydiving fund:) Then I could knock these AFFs out with plenty of time to spare before my hands are freezing to the walls of the airplane
  16. Both of my jumps have been BOC with throw-out pilot chutes, on Sabres(not 2s, I think)
  17. I see people saying they're still in their student progression, what all does that entail? I'm an AFF level 3 who went to his first jump with little to no intention of going ever again(maybe again with a friend)after that first jump I quickly decided I would give it a second shot to make up my mind(although I think it was made up about 3 seconds into the first skydive_< Anyways, I'm still in the "do what they say when they say" phase, so what happens after AFF?
  18. I'm the same way dude, I can't shut up about it and my friends(who all refuse to go with me>_
  19. Yah man, you're jumping out of an AIRPLANE for goodness's sake! If it was really easy I'm sure all these guys with 100s and 1000s of jumps would be bored of it by now! The way I see it, if you didn't endanger anyone's life(yours included)pulled the right handle, weren't reduced to a hysterical mess afterwards, and are willing to try it again, that's all that counts
  20. If I had gone for my first skydive the preceding weekend, I would've seen that 125 way:(
  21. Thanks for all your advice! The date draws near, and still I haven't been able to convince any of my whuffo friends to come with me! Ah well, we wouldn't feel as priviledged if everyone did it, right? Anyways, another issue of concern for me is weather, though I'm in North Texas so I know it's not too severe. At the rate I'm going, I can afford these things once every 2 weeks(it might be a little more often when the price drops as I go to the upper levels)so that puts me finishing right at the start of November, and that's barring any failures. Early November around here isn't too bad, right?
  22. I've only had two jumps, and though my senses weren't quite as struck dead by my first jump, the second jump is like 10,000 times better. Like you, I wasn't even really concsious during the first jump, I did all the AFF stuff, and I do remember what it felt like, but I didn't THINK during the fall, I just ran through the pre-practiced motions I did on the ground. The second jump I was actively thinking, like if I got a hand signal from an instructor, instead of my brain being like "FINGERS = LEGS OUT MOVE AHH" I was able to actively concentrate and correct, etc. But then again, you might not be like me. But heck, a second jump can't hurt, if you're not sure, right? Well, you know what I mean. And show me a man who didn't look at least a LITTLE petrified at first, and I'll show you man forged from steel. Or some similar material that would imply he's just fearless.
  23. Well, I'm in north Texas, so I figure I've got until like late November before weather becomes an issue. And believe me, I'm doing this as fast as my paychecks roll in, and I've got college to worry about too.
  24. I saw this one movie with Keanu Reeves where they were talking to each in freefall by simply raising their voices a little...across long distances>_< And then they're like "OMG 1000 FEET!" And a bunch of stuff happened. THEN they deployed
