  2. One afternoon he buzzed over my house in the DC-3. I forget who was there at the time, Tony Patterson or Lou Howell. That was impressive as well. I wonder where Paul is these days. Is he still alive? Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.
  3. Hey Tuna, Roger has the directions correct. It is just south of the apex of US 41, Nebraska Ave, and Bus US 41, Florida Ave. It has been awhile since I drove by but it seems like the property has been developed. Carmen and I are trying to work up a camping trip to Faver-Dykes State Park south of St Augustine. Maybe we can hook-up then. I'll let you know when plans are firm. We need to do some catchin' up as well. Your broom is still by our fireplace. Ron Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. 4. Funny you should ask that question, 26 years ago on the 15 March, Mike Patterson and I went there and walked around some. That was the last time I drank. Let me know when you are in town, 8 or 9 Apr is good for Carmen and me. I'd love to catch up. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. 5. Hi Pat, A great way to start my day. The Mardi Gras Meet in Hammond LA, taping a wine bottle to the instrument panel for the artificial horizon. Wow! I don't remember Pablo telling that story and I drove back to Tampa. It is difficult to remember much of anything from that meet. I do recall that Ron Brissey would burst into laughter everytime we regained consciousness and I would hand him the Boone's Farm and proclaim that now it was time to get down to some serious drinking. I still have contact with Leon "crazy Coon-ass" Riche as well as many others from that era. My last air show performance was April 2005 and my last jump in 2006. I think I have retired, again, with 3K+ jumps. I just retired as program coordinator at a substance abuse treatment program. Now I am dealing with family members who have dementia, impending death and addiction. Nothing changes. I started jumping in 1963 and got sober in 1983. Only God can take twenty years of being a screw-up and turn it into a profession. We should start having reunions with our own eclectic esoteric bunch. Maybe we could make video documentaries for parachuting posterity. I'll bet Hoop could still give a WC Fields Cardinal demo, with O'doul's. As I recall, you and Ron were both Pope's as well as me, "Pope Ron the Raunchy." Congrats on the NASTAR achievements. Thanks again for your post. 6. It was the sixties. I can't remember. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.
  7. OOPS! Misspelled my own nickname. Senior moment. It is "Mr. Grimsly" or was it "Grimsley?" Damn, can't remember and all my log books are in the safe deposit box. I can't even look it up. At any rate I put that alter ego to rest in 1972. I've had many more since then and am working on a new one now. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. 8. Hi Hoop, Thanks for the heads up notice on your FIRST installment of life in the early days at Z-hills. Looking at the two photos of the the Ten High Bunch brought back some fond memories, weird memories, and a tear to my eye. In the 1972 photo Billy "Crazy Man" Revis, Tony "The Ferret" Patterson, and Don "Fog" Fournier have passed on. Terry Maznio is probably gone. The last I saw of him was 1975 in Aspen CO. He was dealing with some serious Agent Orange related issues. Dennis Glaves??? Not sure about him, it seems as though I heard that he suffered a fatal heart attack but not certain. Phil "Foul" Smith was still jumping the last I heard. Jeff Searles is a retired restauranteur among other things. Ron Brissey was doing tandems at Titusville FL. I think he is still competing in POPS accuracy meets around FL. Mary Donnan is/was a RN and living is Salt Lake City UT. And Mike "Mr. Rumpson" Patterson has retired, then went back to work but not after earning his commercial fishing captain's license. Ron "Mr. Grimesly" Schott, founder and host of the original Magic Forest. And, just for the record, I am the counselor supervisor of a substance abuse outpatient program contracted to the FL Department of Corrections. "Can't you see on this and future Sundays Seven thousand gypsies swirlin' together An offerin' to the sun in the name of the weather. We're gonna hijack, hijack the Starship." 9. This growing old business is weird. I have to do things at 4 in the afternoon that I used to do at 1 in the morning because I fall asleep on the couch after supper. I go to bed to watch the 11 o'clock news then can't sleep after 4 in the morning. BTW, that Josh Hill on the DZ.com homepage isn't JT's son is he? 10. *** AND! I might add... A 'Former' member of The Liberty Parachute Team!!! (Still keepin' yer slot warm!) ...I still fondly recall drilling you on the Night Pyro stuff!
  11. *** I was doing a demo this summer in Dayton Ohio... Met a guy that did the first 'test' jumps on PC's for the Army Team... prior to their using them for demos and competition. I may be wrong...but I though he said that was in '61. Twardo, that would close. Jim Arender was world champion in 1962 and they were using Lo-Po's then. Dick Fortenberry was world champ in 1964 and used a PC. That was the first time in world competition. Fortenberry, as team captain, had the US Team practice off target to fool the CCCP Team. It was the first time they had seen one and would sneak around the packing area trying to get the measurements. I bought mine in 1965. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. 12. Well, older anyway. First jump in 1963, last 1999. Learned how from the USAF Combat Control guys at Hurlburt Field FL. I was just ATC and got out in 65. The 50th Anniversary of CCT and annual reunion is the end of this month. I'll be joining all my old buds except one, Chuck Paradise. He was KIA in 67. 13. Thanks for refreshing my memory. After I made my post I got to thinking that Jim Curtis had/has a wife named Ann. Then I started getting confused with Anne Batterson. 14. ***Like I said, skill and judgment can and does make a big difference. But we were not talking about poorly made cars. We we talking about people without the needed skill and judgment making demos. Big difference Quote I introduced this topic on rec.skydiving a found one or maybe two supporters. The rest of the replies were flames. It seems to me that older jumpers are more serious about demos. The younger crowd looks at exhibition parachuting with the same rebellious attitude as skateboarding through public malls, drag racing on public streets and base jumping from downtown high-rises. It's an attitude of "You can't tell me what I can do or when I can do it." I continue to maintain a belief that there is a difference between a parachutist and a skydiver. 15. That looks like Lakeland Sun 'n Fun 1991. Per chance is that me with the US Flag? Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.
  16. The only problem is, that noone has been able to tell me who these two skydivers on this photo are. The letters '-RTIS' can be seen on the female skydivers helmet, which brings me to the conclusion that her name must be CURTIS, but I don't have a clue who the male skydiver is. Do you per chance know who these two are? I'd be happy for any hint you could give me. ********* Jim Curtis represented the US in world competition in the late 1960's. The gear reflects that time period. Having your name on the front of your helmet in that font style was a US Team practice. Also during that era, only US Team members wore the US Flag decal on their helmets. Not a hard fast rule but a generally accepted practice of respect for our delegated competitors. The helmet of the jumper on the left is not a Bell helmet, as the one worn by the jumper on the right. However, the rig appears to be a Pioneer, the same as the jumper on the right. During that time it was common for world competitors to exchange gear and make friendship jumps. It looks like the jumper on the left, assuming a female, traded gear with an American but preferred her personal helmet. In those days no red blooded American male would have been caught kissing another male on the mouth. Since the ladies of the Soviet women's team were not dainty back then, I would assume that the female is European. That's my guess as to the scenario. If Jim Curtis is still a member of USPA, and I think he is, you could probably contact him through the association and ask him to identify the jumper on the left. Hope that helps. 19. I did a few candycanes on your old canopy! I believe that was SN006. I still have her older sister, SN002. Who knows she may fly again. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.

  21. The first one I heard of was Z-hills 1972. I was ASO at the time but was in Deland watching the Collegiate Nationals. Tony Fredine(sp?) from CA was the so honored guest. He won the the low pull, aka chicken jump, contest the night before around 0200. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. 22. I saw the name Gerry and thought he must be a relative of some sort. I didn't realize that it was Jack. I did my first 8-way with Jack and the other members of the "A team". They said just fall and we'll do the rest. The only problem was getting them to let go at 3500. They were always going for a few more points. My second post here. I received an Email from Ski Chmielewski advising me that Gerry was Jack's brother. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. 23. This is a shock. I knew him as Jack LaLonde and jumped in many a POPS meet with him. One fine fellow. Always laughing even after the scuba diving accident. He was supposed to be paralyzed from the waist down but he would not accept the diagnosis. Quite a man in my book. Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. 24. A C-9 orange and white 28ft flat circular with a 7 panel double L cut. Paid $25 for it and $10 for a T-10 reserve. Jumpsuit was $10 red coveralls from Sears. The year, 1963. Holy Cow!
