  1. As so often is the case, the "hover note" or whatever it's called is the best part of that one. Elvisio "all time fav webcomic" Rodriguez
  2. ...don't get a tax refund. Yeah, really: I WISH I had the problem of being at risk for this. Elvisio "huge extra withholdings all year, STILL cutting a fat check" Rodriguez
  3. This is what I was thinking too: I remember Luigi having to run like hell to stand up his landing. Even with the landing speed of the camera flyer, it sounds like the wind was really honking. Elvisio "still: no fucking way" Rodriguez
  4. HA. All that, and there still won't be enough carryon space. Elvisio "leave some of that shit at home, people!" Rodriguez
  5. In healthcare (especially EMS), "DRT" has a different meaning. DRT = Dead Right There Elvisio "apropos" Rodriguez
  6. I think his argument (through his lawyer) is that they "overlooked" him; that they didn't do enough to assess whether or not the vehicle was occupied by a living person. As a EMS responder, I can dig the idea that they had a moral duty to act: that is, to do whatever they could to determine whether or not the vehicle was occupied. That said, there's painfully little detail about the particulars of the accident and the resources on scene to determine whether or not they had an ability to act. How deep/clear was the water? Could they actually see the vehicle? Was a SCUBA rescue team on call that could have been dispatched? "First responders" would almost surely NOT be trained in water rescue; I know I'm not and wouldn't be foolish enough to try to freelance it by diving (pun intended) an unknown water rescue without the proper gear and training. Where the "first responders" may end up on the cross is for not requesting appropriate additional resources. Elvisio "tort reform por favor" Rodriguez
  7. Things change at the speed of communication. With the internet so handy and most electronics parts so easily shipped, it's easy to see why Radio Shack is in trouble. I think most of us do more of our specialty shopping online than ever before. I know I do. Just like J.C. Penny, Radio Shack needs to find their niche and make themselves fit. Neither company has done it yet. Winner. I agree, with the caveat that sometimes, things just aren't needed anymore. Radio Shack used to be THE place to go for electronics, and the stuff you needed to customize and maintain them, in an era where fathers handed their stereos down to their sons. But now, when the TV or stereo breaks, you just get a new one. And when you do, you go to Best Buy or some place similar. You don't need to figure out how to wire your record player through your amplifier into the graphic equalizer and into your TV so that you can seamlessly sync up Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and the Wizard of Oz. There just aren't enough people tinkering around with electronics anymore. Those who do, get both the information and parts they need from the internet. Elvisio "I was equally at home at Radio Shack and the arcade; you know, a real ladies' man" Rodriguez
  8. I will counter that to say that higher education is more accessible to lower income persons via scholarships, grants, and student loans. The only reason a person doesn't finish is they chose not to. Not sure which post to reply to, but what I wanted to say is that the wildcard here is the community college system. I say this to everyone, but particularly to those in lower income brackets. The community college system is absolutely BUILT to provide educational opportunities to people who have limited income and schedules (due to work, kids, whatever). In the CC system you'll find programs from one semester to two years (typically) that will prepare you for careers that will get you moving upward quickly. Go to a community college, get a (better) job, improve your situation. THEN, when time and money permit, go back to school (even then you can consider online programs or other atypical education models) and turn your associate's degree or certificate into a full BA or BS. In "my first life," I went to Virginia Tech for five years, graduated with a BS AND a BA, and started working as an engineer at $35,000 a year, with a typical amount of debt associated with the endeavor. Six years later I went back to school in a community college nursing program, spent $5000 or less for classes/books/supplies (i.e. everything) and had a job the day I passed the NCLEX making about $10,000/yr MORE than I did the day I started my engineering gig. Don't think you have the money? Don't think you have the time? Don't feel like a traditional four year college is the place for you? ...please, Please, PLEASE give the CC system a look. Elvisio "drank the purple drank" Rodriguez
  9. I don't think there is a difference between the two. The Russians don't care. But okay. What's the President going ti do to respond? My guess: The probability of our involvement is directly proportional to the amount of oil under Ukraine soil. OR, to put it another way, what's in it for us? Elvisio "petrolefirous" Rodriguez
  10. I LOVE the Murphys. I'm learning the bagpipes; each day I work through all the marches and jigs that I'm SUPPOSED to be be learning, look behind me to make sure my Pipe Major didn't sneak into the house, and then break out Fields of Athenry and the Spicy McHaggis Jig. They're both a long way off, but someday... Seeing them, in BOSTON, on St. Paddy's Day must have been in...sane. OK, keeping it on topic: Best: Dropkick Murphys in the Rialto theater, Tucson, Spring 2013. Yeah, you saw this coming. Small venue, new album, great show, their first show in ten years in Tucson. Even with just being pigeonholed in the LAST row, we still had a blast. Worst: Count Basie Orchestra, some time around 1996. It was actually a good show, but... They came to Virginia Tech, and the girl I had a MASSIVE crush on loved them. I got tickets and asked her to go with me; she didn't know they were going to be in town and so didn't have time to get her own tickets; in hindsight I'd bet it's the only reason she agreed to go out with me. GOD, I absolutely crashed and burned on that night. It was, WITHOUT QUESTION, the most painful and awkward date of my life, and it was ALL my fault. As I alluded to above, I'm pretty sure she wanted nothing to do with me, but good LORD I sure sealed the deal with that night. So, although the band was great, that will forever go down in my memory as the worst concert I've ever been to. Elvisio "Haven't thought about her in years" Rodriguez
  11. In the past, the ignorant had little path to be heard. It was the highly educated that were published in newspapers or books, or heard on radio and TV. Opportunities to be heard by the masses were few and far between, and heavy preference was given to those who could express themselves intelligently. Now, everyone has a FB account, Twitter feed, and a blog. EVERYONE is heard. It's not that we're getting dumber... the ignorant are just getting louder. Elvisio "although, I guess that includes me too" Rodriguez
  12. It'll depend on what presents itself as I stroll down the meat aisle, but prolly a steak au poivre, sweet potatoes, whatever veggie looks nice and fresh, and a salad. This is always a tough day for me: I love my wife and want to make her happy on the day, but my overwhelming sense of FUCK YOU toward how commercialized this crap has become makes it hard not to just crawl under a rock and sleep on the couch out of spite. So, a nice dinner and a gift she needs (instead of the bazillion dollar diamond that the industry thinks I should buy her) is how things go down. Elvisio "Olympic lifting shoes aren't sexy, but the squats make her ass defy gravity" Rodriguez
  13. Open up a restaurant. Elvisio "no day but today" Rodriguez
  14. ...adding to maxtreme's comment, will rotation be 180 degrees only, as with the GoPro, or will it allow 90 or 270 degree rotation? The profile of this camera looks like it'd be best for side-mounting on a helmet, although it also looks like it'd do better on a top mount than a GP.
  15. Dunno which would be tougher: being the pilot, or being the engineer in the back with nothing to do but clutch an armrest, pray, and try to keep my shit on the corrrect side of my sphincter. Excellent flying. Elvisio "rotor wing pilots are awesome" Rodriguez
  16. I've been learning to play the bagpipes. This is a fact of which most folks who know me personally are painfully aware. But I'm betting most dizzy.commers don't know it. Elvisio "damn C doubling still sucks" Rodriguez
  17. ...been a rough coupla years for the cruise lines. And they think skydivers are crazy... Elvisio "although, running the tunnel on a cruise ship would be a pretty cool gig" Rodriguez
  18. haha, nope! Didn't even bother to click the OP. With all the whining going around about the new Robocop and all the other remakes going down, I just ASS-U-ME-D. Elvisio "short attention span" Rodriguez
  19. Hmmm... the timing sure is interesting.... http://gma.yahoo.com/feds-charging-reputed-mobster-39-goodfellas-39-heist-150733171--abc-news-topstories.html?vp=1 Elvisio "not the remake that dude had in mind" Rodriguez
  20. Oldfellas, coming to a theater near you. Elvisio "Do I amuse you? Do I make you laugh so hard you pee a little into your Depends?" Rodriguez
  21. That was Christopher Titus. Elvisio "no kids, so no further input" Rodriguez
  22. Touching! Elvisio "Bravo, Sir" Rodriguez
  23. No kidding: standing for the Anthem is the most exercise the fans are going to get the whole game, other than walking to the concession stand for more beer and bratwurst. Elvisio "I'm still a supporter of a no-fuss no-muss Anthem" Rodriguez
  24. By "skating" do you mean ice hockey? I remember you were getting into that a while ago... if so, don't worry about that: you wear so many pads skating that if you have another seizure on the ice, you probably won't hurt the ice at all! Hang in there, kiddo! Elvisio "next time, tell them it was just a new dance move" Rodriguez
  25. I win. The 100% coverage, matching tie-dye jump suit and rig seemed like a GREAT idea at the time, I SWEAR. The clunky-as-hell PC5 in the begging-for-a-snagged-line aluminum box was just a bonus. I don't wear the suit anymore, thank the gods. But given the cost of new rigs nowadays, I'm gonna be jumping that rig until the day I die. ETA: to keep it on topic and discuss the current trends, I still have to supress the urge to laugh out loud every damn time I see someone with a GoPro perched on top of their helmet. I don't do it yet, but eventually will, once I can swallow enough shame to look at myself in the mirror. We all look like a bunch of Teletubbies. Elvisio "forest fire camouflage" Rodriguez
