  1. We have been playing tag for years... and I aplogize for that. I am very into trying new things, but constantly battle the decision makers. We now have the most open-minded, progressive command I have seen in 6 years. I agree with you on the VIP tandem possibilities. Something I have yet to have the opprtunity to work with is the footage of a (VIP or otherwise) passengers reaction just after deployment. I dont think the glove will ever put outside vidoegraphers out of business, I thinks its great for new perspectives to add to a finished product. I continue to appreciate your patience, perspective, and expertise on this product. Im not interested in the debate of which is better... glove, or outside video.... Im interested in the finished product of a vip video with inside, outside, and handglove video. I may not get the chance to work with that, but the guys just making the team probably will sometime soon. Rob, see if you can make me a small glove for the new tiny cameras... Ill pay you myself for the prototype. I know we have the samsung... Thanks again, for putting up with slow progress... anyone looking into this kind of stuff, I would highly suggest at least talking to him about what you want. His experience speaks for itself...
  2. point taken, I am wrong... Sometimes doing something for too long can lead to poor advice. I have officially cheked myself. I will be more carefull in my posts...
  3. Yes, Im telling this to someone with 9 jumps to his name. I also told him to talk with experienced guys from his dropzone... this is important because I think too many of us get caught up in an elitist frame of mind and too readily dismiss guys like this as being too new to the sport to even be allowed to ask. Things have changed since we started shooting video. more and more people want to jump with a camera as they get smaller and less expensive. these people will do it regardless of what we tell them. The new hard drive cameras that are coming out are incredible... They are tiny, and with a proper mount, I beleive they pose very little hazard.. Vidiots wont ever use them, but future camera flyers could benift. I started jumping video back in 1996, with 40 jumps. I was wrong, but you couldnt have told me that back then. I feel its better if we do not treat guys like this like this(new jumpers who want to fly video) like they are idiots who need 500 jumps before they can even THINK of jumping video, and instead help them do it right. Things have changed in this sport. No more BIG cameras(remember reel to reel, hi 8, even TRV's???) that can cause problems during deployment. This thing is so small, I cannot see it causing any problems. And if we show guys like this the right way to get involved, we are better off than simply looking at thier jump numbers and telling them to come back 500 jumps later. . Im willing to bet that not many people could have told you that you werent ready to jump a camera when you started. I sure was not going to listen... As for jump numbers... I know folks with more than 10000 jumps who are probably not ready to jump video. I certainly dont have all the answers, I just think its better to help the guys who are interested rather than just telling them they arent ready. Reminds me of the guys who are trying to buy VLO's with 40 jumps and doing amazing things with them just prior to impact. If I am out of line here, I apologize... I would still suggest this camera to ANYONE who is interested in learning to shoot video.
  4. you can take the guy out of the ghetto, but you cant take the ghetto out of.... well, nevermind. Ill give you your tape back this weekend... on your birthday in fact... surely you remember the "blue water" swirly???
  5. Get the camera, its perfect for what you want it for. I know several jumpers, non-videographers, who love them. You dont need a lanc, or a firewire, or great resolution, you want it to record your jumps. Videographers do not like these cameras(myself included), but I do think they are very worthwhile for a new jumper who is not interested in selling videos. If you decide to become a videographer in the future, then Im sure you will buy somthing better, but until then, its perfect.... As for safety, I beleive you could make a cordura pouch and velcro it to a frap hat if you wanted, those things are so tiny....(not that Im suggesting this) I wish they had these things out years ago... Have one of your DZ videographers help you come up with a system for jumping it, and take thier advice on when you are ready...
  6. Arvel... I cant beleive you didnt catch the "OLD" guy comment... I wasnt referring to your age! guess you better plan on coming to the reunion this year, your getting rusty. Happy 47th on sat....
  7. check your spaceland anomaly email... I know someone in your area who has one...
  8. Zee, nice video man... Damn I love seeing that kind of stuff. Steve, for a guy who wants to fly on his back, you seem to be able to do a badass job of filming tandems... good video, that passenger just wanted to look down, and you got the shot. As for back flying, I like to check out arvel, from raeford... quiet guy who you wont see talking shit, but will blow you away with his ability... OLD guy who can kick all of our young asses, great example of wingless videography. It always interests me to find that the guys who speak the least have the most to teach...
  9. Definitley a good tool for those passengers who just want to look down.... Once I started flying on my back, I realized I was doing it too much, makes for a boring video with nothing but plain sky for a background. I think its good to be under it, over it, and level with it. I also think its great taking grips with the passenger, alot of them like it. I know Ill get hammered for this here, but I see nothing wrong with flying directly under the tandem. It will speed up, and as long as you speed up with it, you wont make contact. This is possible for the entire skydive, although it makes for a bland video. Very important to have good gear , and pre dive checks with this for obvious reasons. We dont use hackys, we use the low profile wedge pillows. As for the wings, I fought the idea of not using them for a long time, and eventually found that I have more range without them. Alot of good flyers(fritz and eli being the first) tried to convince me of this, and I refused to try. Once I did, I was very surprised at the increase in range. 185 to 200 lbs before gear no problem. One of our guys tops out at 235 and can do it, although he feels he is working too hard!! With wings, you cannot fly with your arms dierectly behind you, which also prevents you from completely reverse arching. I would highly suggest trying it and I wish I would have years ago, but I fought the idea due to my being an idiot.
  10. Rigger rob is the way to go, he will customize the hand mount to fit your needs, and definitley knows his stuff.. Im still trying to re-contact him, so if you read this rob, email me([email protected]). We still have the original you sent, and with new leadership here, it will be easier to try some new things. Team just got some smaller cameras which will make the TM's happier... progress can be slow in the army...
  11. Our VAIO's came with winDVD, its not a good program. I use Roxio, which allows you to separate chapters, make title screens, and then lable the chapters as well. It almost makes your DVD title screen look like you got it from a video store. There is one better out there, but Im waiting to hear what it is. Use the adobe program to edit with, even if you dont do much in the way of effects, its perfect for even simple fades, dissolves, adding stills, etc. Then, go to File, export to movie, and it will make your project an AVI file, which you then import into the Roxio DVD builder. I spent a long time screwing this up, so if you have questions, let me know. If you meet a jumper named Jackie(or Jake) this weekend, tell her Dave says hello... take care, Dave (edited to add- to clarify, I saw you were in hawaii, she will be at the dropzone this weekend....)
  12. First of all, I dont post much here, so Im not real informed on the lingo(troll, flamers, etc.) I do see alot of arguing, which is good, as long as its respectful. No need to insult folks, were all skydivers, and no one wants to do any harm to anyone. Im responding because my inverted dock was brought up. More info might add some light. That was with my brother in law, at Raeford DZ right after he proposed to my sister. It was his fifth tandem. We discussed it in detail, and the TM was a teammate I have several hundred tandems with, and have jumped with daily for 4 years. Im not sure how the video ended up on a post, but it should not have only because it creates concern with those uninformed of the facts, and ideas in young videographers. Golden Knight aircraft was not used, and the jumps were paid for by all of us. We do linked exits on the team. Harness grip, single hand grip, there are many. We are no better than anyone else, but we have the advantage of jumping with the same TM's everyday, all year. I agree that safety is of utmost importance, but I also feel you must try new things in order to progress. The front float is a great exit position for tandems, and took me awhile to get right. Others pick it up faster, and still, other go only with what they are comfortable with, and do not try anything new. I do not get paid for each tandem, I get paid a salary, which also gives me the advantage of experimentation without worry of collecting 30 bucks for a bad video. SNEAKY, email me([email protected]) and I would be more than happy to discuss this stuff with you, exchange ideas, maybe I could learn some new stuff as well. Ill be more than happy to exchange pics and video.I think it was a great thread. As for all this talk of experience, jump numbers, it is all relative. I jump with my wife(300 jumps) and I am a wealth of knowledge for her. I jump with guys like Kurt Isenbarger, Chuck Blue, Steve Curtis, Omar, and especially when I worked with Paul Rafferty, I am a student. We are all constantly learning. PILOTDAVE, I dont believe in posting pics to get respect... that is something you earn only in the air, not on a post with a couple of cool pictures. AIRBORNE82ND, I disagree with your post. Please state your name, we probably know each other. If you are a Raefordite, listen to those regulars out there, they are the best in the business. Chuck(Uh, skymonleyone), Arvel, DAGIMP, Scott Rhodes, Paul Raspino, , and many others out there are experts in what they do, talk to them, absorb thier knowledge. Please be carefull of saying someone is "crying about safety". I did not meet aggiedave, but I was at his dropzone for the Bush tandems, and those guys are top notch. I dont beleive he was crying about anything, I beleive he was concerned, and I respect that. He may disagree with some of the things we do on the team, and some of the things done at other dropzones, but it is of concern for passenger safety, which is ultimately the only real important part of the experience... (Sidenote- Arvel, awseome tandem video of Pedro's daughter, unfortunatley I spelled your first and last name incorrectly on the memorial DVD. Blame Travis Belt!!!... Ill fix it.) Sorry for the long post.
