    This is the kind of skewed reasoning that really winds people up and has beset this forum with accusations of favouritism and biased moderation. Nick get's an apology and you accuse ME of name calling.

    Nick's attack (it wasn't some innocent comment you know) against hundreds of individuals was about as childish as it gets. An insult for the sake of insulting. A person can not after all literally be an asshole. Naive maybe, moronic maybe, unethical maybe but what's asshole supposed to mean exactly.

    I replied that Nick was an embittered hypocrite. That's pretty specific and is not without merit.

    Embittered because his comments were, overall, groundless and motivated by hatred for people he really doesn't know anything about, and hypocritical because he has attended events sponsored by an energy drink manufacturer but obviously doesn't feel that his participation broke any cardinal ethical rules whereas those who attended X days did.

    I would have thought, that an intelligent guy like yourself would have been able to distinguish between childish inflammatory insults (asshole, wanker, shitface, dickhead, knob jockey, gayboy etc) and considered critical assessments of an individual's personality traits (hypocrite, bitter, disingenuous, pious, naive etc)

    I'm struggling to work out what you wanted or expected in response to Nick's post, which as Ray pointed out, you chose to highlight by splitting it off. Was it really unforeseeable that some of us would read that comment and think "what a total hypocrite coming from a dude who did a bunch of TV interviews at a red bull sponsored bridgeday only 2 years ago".

    Or is me pointing this out not playing by the rules. Am I not showing the deference you feel Nick deserves?

    Well be default, I have the utmost respect for any BASE jumper who was part of the pioneering years. However, that respect is not unconditional. Nick has proven time and again that he harbours serious ill-will and lack of any reciprical respect for an entire generation of jumpers and so whatever respect I might have had for him has long since evaporated.

    Name caller indeed. Now that's an inflammatory personal attack if ever there was one.

    Splitting it off, then removing the offending comment - where Nick called everyone who attended the Go FAst event in Rotterdam 'assholes' removes the context with which several replied, in effect making it look like those who took exception to his pathetic outburst are the aggressors here.

    So just in the interests of balance, and for anyone who missed the original unedited post, Nick DG, the last bastion of self appointed wisdom, called anyone who attends, or has participated in BASE jumping events (which are backed or sponsored by any organisation with commercial interests outside of BASE jumping) glory seeking assholes. Past or Future.

    So if you have attended the Royal Gorge games (courtesy of Go Fast), KL (courtesy of Menara amongst others), The UK and Belgium Crane boogies (Go FAst again), Ostankino (courtesy of many sponsors), Bridgeday (with it's 1000's of spectators and sponsors including Dodge) and any number of other worldwide events....HE means YOU.....assholios.

    Discuss in an adult manner!

Anyone who has taken even a passing interest in Nick's posts in the past should already have noticed one immutable thread which link his bilious rants, that being the "one rule for him and his buddies and one rule for the rest of us" chestnut....and all this justified with the disconcertingly vague "things were different back then" get out of jail free card.

    Nick DG slamming people over scrambling for their supposed "15 minutes of fame" is the biggest joke i've heard in a long time. No one has come across as desperate as he is for an extra hour basking in the warmth of the celebrity sun and I even suspect these contentious rants of his are just another way of ensuring that he's not completely overlooked by the spotlight.

    Just because the chance of an object strike is small, doesn't mean you won't fall over on landing and crack your skull on any number of rocks. Sometimes things don't go to plan and you have to land your canopy in less than ideal places. When this happens you might be glad of the helmet and pads.

  15. If that was sarcasm then it was well disguised.

    Just sounded like an ill conceived brain fart to me, the logical conclusion of which is nobody bandit jumps anything ever, for fear of jeopardizing the remote possibility of an unconfirmed and highly secret legal event.

    If a specific event is in the offing then it would be a pretty good idea to let other jumpers in on the secret, so they can then make an informed decision as to whether steering clear of a specific site is worth the potential rewards.

    Even if that is the case, any single jumper is well within their rights to not abide by the event organisers requests and an organiser of such an event should be realistic and factor into any negotiations with a site owner the "bandit variable" as they do not have control or jurisdiction over all other jumpers and to try and make out that they do during negotiations is to risk a huge backfire which will make them look not only inept but liars to boot when "one of their own" goes against the agreement. That may not be popular but that is the way it is. The harsh reality is that why should all jumpers abstain from a site when only some jumpers will receive an invite to the sanctioned event.

    BASE jumping exists because it doesn't require permission. Legal events and legal sites will come and go but bandit jumping is the only guaranteed way to ensure the survival of BASE for a new generation. It's the DNA of us as a species and that's why they haven't been able to stamp us out yet, despite the best efforts of the do-gooders, conservative fear-mongers, compensation lawyers and health and safety officials.

    That is such a fucked up approach i don't know where to even start. Legal sanctioned events will come and go. They are a bonus. Bandit jumping is the lifesblood of BASE. Go down the route you just suggested and you'll be held by the bollocks forever, afraid to do anything to upset the authorities in case they snatch away your legal site.

    Are you seriously suggesting we all abstain from jumping all buildings JUST IN CASE someone might be organising "in secret" some legal event.

    Think about what you just said carefully. It's utter nonsense and to me is pretty much the antithesis of what BASE jumping is about.

  17. Yeah very funny. So my canopy skills aren't so great. I assume someone told you i tend to land in water.

    Seriously though. My flight is into Bergen airport on the 4th. From there I'm hiring a car (again, very expensive) and i'll be driving to Romsdalen??? from there. Not sure how long that's going to take. Is there accomodation in town for BASE jumpers or even a campsite.

    Ok. Without trawling though my logbooks, i'd say 75% of my jumps are non legal - that is, required trespassing. The rest are pretty much big walls in europe or the few small cliffs we have over here which although not condoned are not illegal.

    So now to the main issue. Firstly, the implied connection between lack of ninja skills and recent busts. Well firstly, I'd have to question whether there is ANY increase in busts lately. Probably not.

    As to whether some of the recent busts are down to stupid jumpers and lack of ninja skills... well you'd have to be specific as throwing together jumps as diverse as the recent aussie one, my recent bust at Wembley and the guy who PCA'd a mate off a building in the states and climbed down to a welcoming party....each case on it's own merits.

    Getting busted on a remote antenna because you elected to jump it; in the middle of the day, when a farmer was in the fields near-by or when engineers were on site, well you could notch that up to bad practice, lack of common sense and lack of ethics.

    Getting busted jumping an occupied building because Police happened to be driving by just as you land.....well that's an issue which could be hotly debated here. Some will argue that you shouldn't have jumped the building at all if there was any chance of getting busted, others would argue that jumping is about calculated risks, and busts like injury, are all a part of the equation.

    Similarly, many of us will have run out onto motorway (highway/interstate) bridges to jump from the centre or have been dropped off by getaway drivers at the middle. It's all down to good or bad luck as to whether a police car happens to drive past at that exact moment. Day or night?

    The one thing i would say is that people really seem to be buying in to this 'ninja' stealth idea that being cunning is going to ensure you don't get caught. That's naive rubbish. Canopies do not understand the concept of stealth. When they open, they let the world know. When they do, there's a certain amount of luck involved in who happened to be in earshot at that exact moment.

    Can you really account for every security guard, every police officer, every have-a-go hero?

    Yes certain measures can be employed, basic common sense applied but just like physically surviving a BASE jump, a big chunk of it boils down to raw luck.

    Some jumpers take the absolute piss and get away with it for years. Some take all the cautious measures they can and still pay the price.

    Me. I live and work in the Capital which I believe pre-disposes me to greater bust risks than if i lived in a more rural area. I don't have to do the jumps I do, but I choose to, and when I do them I go in with eyes wide open.

    I'll take the necessary precautions to avoid getting busted but some jumps, and specifically the one I was busted on recently which I guess you may have alluded to as it was mentioned in a thread here, well, some jumps you either do them or you don't...and doing them nearly assures you of getting busted. I was willing to do that and I have no regrets whatsoever...well a few minor ones if i'm honest.

    What I can say is that I would have regretted not seizing the moment and going for that jump forever. The window of opportunity would have passed and I might have spent years thinking 'if only'.

    That is not why I started jumping. I BASE jump to turn 'what ifs' and 'if onlys' into real incredible experiences. As corny as that sounds....I'd say that pretty much sums it up for me, so the odd bust, providing I've done all i can to minimise that risk and the impact of my actions on others (beyond not jumping) is something I can live with, and at the end of the day, I have to live with myself and not with the few who would piously use any opportunity to slap me down.

  21. About 1 month before Duane Thomas died, he sent me a bunch of info and an invite (which i declined as i wasn't experienced enough) for his next planned expedition - this cave.

    Duane was very much into these adventures, having done Baffin, mexico, angel falls, etc etc and I have no doubt at all that had he not died he'd have done this jump.

    Personally, i'm glad to see someone has done it. Looks like a great place.

  23. I'm not sure you understand the motivations behind this jump. It certainly wasn't for any payday. The only people who have benefited from any footage of that jump were the construction company who confiscated our footage and then sold it to the press

    The press article is, naturally, dogshit.

    The height to impact was 120ft, 160ft to landing.

    We at no point attempted to climb the arch. It was never an option.

    We didn't scream anything on landing although we did quote the famous 1966 world cup line on DTM touching down.


    We didn't trick our way in with fake id. We got in and jumped without crossing the path of a single person. First person we saw was the security guard after we landed.

    The mascot is DTM's and probably has more BASE jumps than me. ANyone who has met DTM has met Kula Shaker. What can I say. He's a retard.

    Report says DTM jumped with a scream of delight. Never heard him do anything but his obligatory whispered 3,2,1, cya on any jump....EVER.

    The funniest bit in the article for me is

    which is no doubt untrue too BUT how funny is that. Like they watch re-runs of the previous nights footage and he was just checking. No wonder they failed to prevent us jumping, they were too busy catching up on the footage of the day before...bizarre.

    We jumped, got caught and got exposed by someone employed by Multiplex, but that's the game we're in. AS Zoter said,fair enough, can't really blame him for that.

    And as far as i'm concerned, that is that. End of. Not interested in persuing copyrights or privacy infringments. We're not victims in this, just participants. Jumped with eyes wide open, and happy to take the consequences, whatever they are.

    What you would achieve by persuing any kind of complaint is making BASE jumpers look like a bunch of 'blame merchants' who can't take responsibility for their actions and who roll over at the first sign of aggro and whinge about being victimized.

    Fuck that. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

  24. They didn't touch our rigs. They took our cameras and phones only, which have since been returned to us.

    Did we have a get-away plan? Of course we did, but this kind of jump isn't your average jump. You can't exactly plan it to perfection. For one, you can't walk the site before hand and work out an exact route out, you have no idea which direction or when or how many security guards are going to appear but what you do know is the chance of getting away is slim.

    Security appeared within a few seconds of my partner landing. By that time i already had the canopy collected up and was heading towards him and in the opposite direction of the security guard who had appeared.

    But please, if you have any suggestions on what we could have done differently, do share, i'd be keen to know your thoughts.
