  1. Could we please make that a Sticky? I've found myself mentally searching for that thread on the weekly "Need advice for first rig"-thread. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...

  3. There wasn't really. Some folks just made a mess of their DZ by cluttering it with unnecessary info. That's why I had asked for ppl to submit their dz's in a way as i decribed, but no one has posted anything since then... There's a french collection, done by http://www.wuza.net/ which only has one icon per dz and all available info with that. It's very complete for Europe, didnt check the US. 4. When you hit the brakes, your body swings foward. When the canopy recovers, it surges foward and there is much less power needed on the fronts (as the canopy is slower and creates less lift, plus the foward surge makes the downtrim using fronts easier). I do it to get them down significantly faster and easier than with any other technique (I'm on a Xfire2 @ 1.7). Moritz Friess suggested this to me when I had trouble pulling and keeping the fronts down all the way during a canopy class. It has made a world of a difference. I used to make longer 90 deg. carve approaches to build up speed, but the above described double fronts>turn by letting 1 front up>finalize in double fronts has me coming in with higher speeds in a more controlled and safer fashion (as I can abort the turn higher than in a carve-to-final setup if need be). It also sets the initialization altitude higher as I tend to burn more alti like this. Added bonus: If you sharpen your turn inadvertedly, you've still got a bit more margin before getting in the corner. Flying out of your turns in double fronts is a good thing to do for me. 5. Most helmets have been designed with Pro-Dytter and Pro-Track in mind, as they've been around so long. The newer, smaller ones only came out in the last 2 years and the difference in not really significant. I'm happy I still had mine (Pro-D.) and hadn't sold it as my new Optima decided to give up during a day of jumping. Now, 10 days later I have my replaced Optima from L&B, their service is bar none. Pro-Dytters are rocksolid. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...

  9. Nice colors... Good for canopies, can be seen against every backdrop. However, I dont have a matching paintjob on the helmet yet. No reason colors shouldnt match if you buy the stuff new - it's your choice, after all. And if it looks nifty, so be it! Aerodium

Haven't been to an Aerodium, but from spring next year the closest closed, recirculating Tunnel from Gdansk would probably be in Bottrop, FRG. 14 ft. diameter and 2000 hp. Fast and big enough for 4way RW. Hope this is not offtopic. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 11. My suggestion: Stick to the rules and do a SEARCH. Hope to not come across impolite, but the search for "first rig" gives results... Maybe the large number of resluts has something to do with many people not searching but just posting straight away, about once every week, as soon as the last "first rig" thread disappears from page 1 in gear and rigging... 13. Closed nose as on the Icarus Crossfire means that the nose is mostly closed. There's a picture of it somewhere on the Icarus webpage. The only completely closed nose canopy i know is the Paratec R.A.G.E, a combination of an airlock and a guidance sheet from the inlets towards the leading edge (nose). 14. I've only recently started freeflying in the tunnel and the rig factor is negligeable (Have 8 hrs total now and just had headdown liftoff). While it is true that you can use your back and shoulders to greater effect in the tunnel (at least sitflying), you still can use this move when you're in the sky with a rig on. It takes a couple of jumps to transfer the tunnel moves to the sky, but in general the felt understanding of the airflow will increase significantly. The bigger difference rather than the rig I feel is the density of the air. The tunnels compress the air in the chamber for the Bernoulli effect, thus the air feels much harder and denser in the tunnel. It will feel softer outside. My take on your choices in learning to freefly in the sky or in the tunnel: tunnel. Will get you there from scratch much faster than in the sky, at far less cost. Obviously, flying in the tunnel doesn't have the beauty of outside flying. But, if you're just starting out, you wont have to unlearn bad habits you trained in learning it in the sky. In the sky you cant tell whether you are moving 20 feet, in the tunnel you'll see it immediately. Invaluable training. For me, the tunnel will never replace skydiving, cause outside is just more beautiful and canopy rides rock, swooping rocks. But the precision and control you get on your moves in the tunnel have their own appeal. ETA: Of course, coaching and serious commitment is what counts. To start out, I recommend at least 90-120 minutes with coaching to get you anywhere you can see results. Shitload of money, yes, but well spent and much cheaper than equivalent time in skydives, especially considering coach jumps. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 16. Hey folks, A couple of friends of ours will get some tunnel time at Paraclete during the third week of january, and one of my buddies and me want to go skydiving for another week afterwards before returning to snowcovered Germany. As most DZ website calendars don't reach that long, we were wondering what DZs will be operating at a solid turnaround, so we dont spend time on the ground waiting ofr a load to fill up. The last week of january isn't really holiday time, so we're concerned it may be an issue. My idea would be to go to California or Arizona (Perris, Elsinore/Eloy) or maybe Florida. Edited: However, The desert regions are our favorites, as Florida gets a lot of rain in that season, doesn't it? As Skymama said, Florida doesn't get much rain, so it stands equal for suggestions.
  17. Thanks a lot. Now this might well be a worthy successor for my old PC-5... What kind of wideangle was used on the horny gorilla? Just wondering because of the vignetting, it didn't seem to be wider than a 0.3 lens. I might just wait for my PC-5 to give up and get the successor model with a lens mount.... Also, was it shot on HD or SD? It's really hard to tell from a web video... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 19. Given small towns with no street names, it can make perfect sense to name a house to have a quicker understanding of which is meant (same logic as naming seas, rivers and countries [That small country south of Germany; The left or the right one?]). But for a canopy that has a distinct owner, colorscheme and type classification... Crazy. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 20. Dude; What you call a propeller is the same thing as a standard wing; it creates a lift in one direction. (propeller=vertical arrangement=foward lift=thrust ; wings=horizontal arrangement=upward lift). So if you describe "to get the canopy in a more propeller shape" i take what you want to say is you create more lift with less drag. but that is not true for rear risers. By using rears you just change the trim angle of the canopy, changing the attack angle (as phoenixlpr pointed out already). Pulling down one frontriser and the opposite rear riser to turn one way to give you more efficient turns is a really bad idea, as it will distort the profile quite strongly, creating way more drag and opposing turn inputs. It will at the least dangerous just make your canopy unstable. The most efficient turn in respect to glide is a harness turn, as it will only slightly distort the canopy and keep it in full flight. You could combine it with a bit of (double) rear riser input for a flatter general glide, but i dont know if that's a good idea. I highly recommend you to not apply the book knowledge of windsurfing to canopy flight. While physics always apply, the wings differ. For a good read, check out Brian Germains book. Sit flying?

While I second that and consider myself the like, I've also seen people w/ 600 freefly jumps spending 40 minutes of tunnel time before being allowed on their backs, cause they couldn't even fly a stable student arch.... Yikes! I dont mind if people do freefly straight from the start, as long as they can fly stable on their belly and can track (away) solidly. Sit flying?

Aside from all the advice given already, I might point you to the technically perfect learning environment of a vertical wind tunnel. I spent a lot of time learning a proper sit and when I started learning to sit in the tunnel, it finally all worked out. In fact, most of my sit time in the tunnel was spent breaking bad habits engraved by self-teaching. Yes, it's pricey, but you can get the best understanding of the position in there, for the sake of merciless reference. You wont notice a 10m sideslide/backslide in the sky, but you will in the tunnel. Plus an hour of coaching in the tunnel equals about 120+ jumps and is waaaay cheaper than an equal amount of coach jumps. Two general recommendations aside from that; Dont get your arms back, get them out to the sides. Maintain body tension (not stiffness!) and fly wide, like wide legs. Try to stay aware of where your lower legs are. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...
  24. Get in touch with some of the people at www.skydiveasia.org, they might be able to help you. While the site is generally out of date, you can get some contacts there that might know more. Also PMing DZ.com user grosfion might help, he used to be based in Singapore and may have some better first-hand info/contacts. Also there's a newer and bigger(and faster) Skyventure tunnel than Genting in the works at the new harbor center, which will open next summer or so; their staff is being trained at the UK Skyventure Airkix atm.
