  1. "No. Experienced jumper learning a new trick vs. 1st timer? more like apples & orangutans. " Again-you want to make minimum jump numbers a regulation-I don't see as anyone would argue the point. Hell, even require "RTFM". (Start with the SIM). But sorry, but I can't help getting hung up on the comparisons.... TI, you're attached to the student. AFFI, initially you're harness hold out the door with them, stabilize and pull for them if need be.. WS? They've already learned to jump, been doin it- Yes, you're imparting knowlege to them pre jump, But reality is even if you're flying right next to them-they're on their own once they're out the door......
  2. So how manyskydivers does it take to change a lightbulb? (on the edge of the mag)
  3. Going to try to be more tech savvy now....at least try! Difference between 3.3 megapixel CCD Imager 1/3 advanced HAD with 2048 pixels/ but then says 530 Horizntal resolution vs 1.0 megapixel CCD Imager 1/6 HAD with 690 pixels with 520 lines horizontal resolution. So if there is only a difference of 10 horizontal lines of resolution would there really be much difference in video qaulity? Reprogramming the prom in my vette makes sense to me, but these specs don't!
  4. Response to no one in particular..... Yes, some kind of across the board standardization is a real good thing. Make a minimum jump number for WS a regulation-OK, now DZO's can enforce it even. But I'm just having a hard time comparing the "need" for an "official" WSI rating with AFFI or TI. Just seems ....well not quite apples and oranges but kinda....... I'm I the only one having a hard time with the comparison????
  5. I've been comparing to a wide variety. I"ve been using the sony vcl-0625s wide angle lense. I hadn't heard much bad about that one...
  6. Yup, it's on manual focus, set with the wide angle on it. And yea sometimes after battery change it defaults back so I've got in the habit of double checking the focus along with making sure the manual zoom didn't get bumped on. The difference I'm seeing is in resolution-especially noticable when played back full screen. Just wondering if the HC62/96s would make a diff or is an HD cam the only way to increase video quality/resolution seen?
  7. I've been using a Sony dcr-hc42 for FF and WS personal videos. The Sony HC-42 was fine for that. I just started trying video for fun jump RW groups for their own reviews. This is a fun new task in the air! But I have been noticing quite a difference in my video quality vs others posted. I'm still not ready to make a big investment in a camcorder but would like to get higher quality video. I've been looking at upgrading to the HC62 but it looks like the lenses are bout the same as the HC42, and it isn't until you get to the HC96 that there is a significant difference in the lenses. But I'd really like to know if ya'll have seen any real world differences in video quality between any of these cams? Thanks for any and all info!
  8. And alls I can think if it were to pass..... Next-arguments for- Required Instructor ratings for FF Camera Automauti etc, etc..........
  9. Now I understand when people accuse you of twisting words....... OK I'll be more specific for you-If you think the person that attempted a rape and was stopped is a better person than the one who was able to carry it out-then we live in different worlds.
  10. As I stated she did in fact bring along her 12yr old daughter. If she's 12 it's a rape of a child no matter how the child is coerced (PC288a along with whatever other atrocities are commited) , that's the law as it well should be. If anyone wants to call it not rape and marginalize it because it's a "threesome".... Well then our definitions are worlds apart and that person sure as hell would never babysit for me. Anyone that wants to marginalize crimes like this sets off my alarm bells..... And if she had planned it but they wouldn't have been able to carry it out before being stopped? That would have made it more OK? BULLSHIT!
  11. Quote>What is "non-violent abuse"? Planning a 3-way with your 12 year old daughter. Being so neglectful that you leave your six month old child outside at night. Things like that. ______________________________________________ I know someone already called you on the above, but it really does wind me up that anyone can even think about sayin that bringin along a 12yr is non violent. It's rape of a 12 yr old pimped out by her mother!!!!! WHAT THE HELL ISN'T VIOLENT ABOUT THAT!!!!!
  12. Granted giving the govt this power would have the potential for abuse-that's a given. I do like the idea of offering to pay them!!!! And as for it's too late-I'm not talking "pre-cog" just that they've already proven once that they could give a shit about actually looking after a kid. _________________________________________________ The right to have children and raise them to your standards is so fundamental to the human condition, that I am not comfortable allowing the government to take it from anyone, ever. _________________________________________ I'm actually suprised that this feeling is coming thru so much here. I guess you'd have to sit down and read a couple years worth of cases from CAC (Crimes Against Children) to relate a bit more........
  13. The recent posts about abortion and all the unwanted kids made me want to throw out some things that have been stuck in my head for a while now.... And I'm genuinely interested if anyone else would be truly serious about it also. And I realize that it would never be done in this society what with ACLU etc etc. but I digress..... A couple cases are below but I put in the option "depends on severity of abuse"also. When kids are abused to the point that the parents go to jail and the kids go to CPS (or the morgue) I really would like to see lifetime mandatory sterilization of the parents implemented. When you see the mother bring along her 12 yr old daughter because her dirtbag boyfriend wants a threesome with her, I just don't see that the mother should have anymore chances to do it again...... Or the 1 yr old's head is caved in on the kitchen counter because he wouldn't stop crying.... After seeing the hell that some of these kids go thru I can't help but wonder if abortion wouldn't have been the better option-but short of that at least keep these POS from having a chance to have another kid and do it again....
  14. (I have often wondered how many people who are against abortion are foster parents) Best point in this whole thread! Yes, late term done "just cause" is BS.. However...... All the "pro-life" or whatever the preferred label is folk- If they feel that strongly about it-before they murder someone themselves...... Where the hell are they lining up to adopt and support these unwanted babies!? They want their position respected, then put their money where their mouths are! In all the protests I've seen it's predominately white bread people with their own kids out there. Now if they were out there with a bunch of adopted kids of all different colors their position would have a lot more respect......
  15. This is not to slam any manufacturer as I realize that there is a lot of R&D etc. that has to be covered in costs. But realizing the mark up on a lot of items from gasoline to jewelry to whatever that can be seen in the wide range of prices to be found got me wondering.... (Especially since all of our dollars feel a lot tighter nowadays!)
  16. Sure, try the nice way first..... But after bangin your head against the wall long enough-well anymore I say Bounce Bingo is next!!!!!! Hey where's Ron for this one!!
  17. But if you're already low then counting to 5000 is gonna be way too late........
  18. exactly...and the POLICY at Perris is if you are in the air and this happens, then you land off the grass. the GRASS IS CLOSED. There are acres and acres of dirt fields to land in. So you have to adjust your pattern (as brett said) in order to land out in the dirt. The REAL issue here is that everyone had "grass envy" and ignored the pertinent rule. heaven forbid they get their jumpsuits dirty. Hmmm, I'm sure "grass envy" does play a part in these things at times. However.... I'm also looking back to a mention above about the swooper coming in (or even just a late commitment to direction from anyone-be it "chasing the sock" or whatever) and folk behind him guessing his direction-there has been enough low turns that ended up in injuries; I don't want to see any more. (And yes everyone "should" be able to safely flat turn etc. but obviously that isn't the case. That's another whole subject!) And say you're lined up and then abort to the dirt on the side...now a canopy behind you-you're cutting across in front of them....and there's a potential canopy collision..... I'm thinkin there is advantage to hangin back till the landing patterns well established. And if it's lookin like a cluster developing, well then I like the dirt! Just throwing more food for thought out there........
  19. Point taken-I was just thinking back to student days of ripcord mains where I was taught to check over your shoulder if nothings happening after pulling.-simple and quickly made type of move.
  20. Reply to no one in particular- First one on the grass entered mid field-I admit it actually looked like he was going to land south to north at first to me also. Lesson-set up in an obvious (especially obvious for newbs) manner. Winds had been light and variable with flags shifting-but typical Perris it can change as your already on approach-I'll take the down winder if need be. After the first one (on grass) landed to the south I was already setting up approach-looked behind me and saw the newbs set up to land south to north-yes I could of also landed to south, but I also don't expect/want to see a newb attempt a low turn and get hurt. If I did land to south at that point I saw myself as the one likely getting hit..... I saw the way clear to the North and went long and landed off the grass to the North wanting to avoid what looked likely...... Absolutely newb with target fixation after talking to him later. And yes when you're on the ground heads up-which I admit I've been guilty of a lack of also-who hasn't if you're being honest? Don't get complacent! I like to be my own harshest critic-feel free to join me! I never want to stop learning.
  21. In light of the recent incident at Perris and previous reserve deployment hesitations I really would like to know if there has been any "official" studies on ideal body position to enhance rapid deployment of the reserve. In the incidents it was mentioned that JS actually did recomend a head high position. Does any other manufacturer give advice? Definitely sounds like this could/should be added to our pre-jump mental EP's.
  22. Just curious the testing you mention-how new was that MD80? And was it tested in flight? Reason being after having flown armed for work and having a chance to candidly talk to some pilots; those doors have been known to pop open on take off- whether because of older aircraft? Airframe flex only seen on take off? Either way it was a quandry for them.....was that door rigged to open? Do I abort? Continue? And yes doors plus a competent pilot with a weapon is preferable. I trust the pilot to fly the plane safely, so I'll trust them with weapons also!
  23. I believe the dead cops WERE armed with guns and were properly trained in their use (unlike many civilians). Didn't seem to help them. I usually don't bother with these discussions but.... Now for a LEO perspective. Yes the cops were armed and trained and still died. However if we responded to every call such as this with rifles/shotguns aimed on entry; well, the public and media would be screaming that it was an over reaction/racially motivated, blah blah blah!!!! So the street cop has to temper their response. And the way I look at it is the way our hands are tied the bad guy is always going to get a first shot free. That's the unfortunate facts of life..... If it comes in as an active shooter call then we can respond without quite so many monday morning quarterbacks. Now for some further examples-(real by the way) In Florida there was a "test run" by terrorists- two men boarded a school bus full of kids, glared at the bus driver, sat down, wearing heavy clothing, refused to leave. Responding cops arrested them with minimal force. But if it was a real bombing they would of been wrong and a bus full of kids would of been dead. Or if they had taken the head shots and no bombs found the media would of crucified them. Real FBI stats are that in stranger abductions of kids 75% are dead within 3 hours and 98% in 3 days. If you see it going down do you take the shot? Either way you're going to get all the monday morning quarterbacks second guessing you after the fact. And as far as "american culture" , "gun culture" being to blame.....try taking a look at a changing parenting culture instead-take a long hard look at that one! Along with the resulting change in values that result. Oh BTW, Washington DC has about the most restrictive gun laws on the books, and also has the highest violent crime rate. And yea, if someone has a real suggestion to a solution speak up! A solution that doesn't trample all your civil rights also. But don't even waste time with ban all guns-if you could only see what illegal heavy weapons come in along with the illegal drugs....... OK, end of what I meant as food for thought and I guess was kind of a rant.... sorry it got so long.....
  24. Back to the OP- Ever heard the saying "It's the Indian, not the arrow"?
  25. nbblood- that's an awesome example!!! No I've never seen it that bad....yet! In answer to a few questions and comments- There are DZ's that I would also only advise experienced up-jumpers to go to. And others that I wouldn't advise anyone to go to! I really like the above comment regarding if you would hesitate at all about letting your own mother jump there. As far as specific safety issues, it runs the list from obvious shitty aircraft (though not as bad as nbblood's example!), no use of seatbelts, tandems going in whiteout conditions from exit solid down to 1000ft, really sketchy tandem landings due to conditions, etc etc. And I realize the TIs working the tandem mills have a lotta pressure on them to keep jumping, but at a certain point....come on, you are responsible for someone else's life too!
