  3. Point taken. I suppose that my reply was intended for everyone out there that thinks that BASE will always be their "end all be all" sport. After all, How can some one say with a straight face that what they are doing at this very moment in their lives will be what they want to be doing in 20, 30, or 50 years from now? Believe it or not, for most, not all, but for most, the BASE fire will fade. This fact is inevitable. One day in the future, (if you get that far) you will find your self at the edge of an object asking if you really need one more jump. Not because your scared or worrying about death, but because it has become common place and well, kind of boring. You may go on like that for some time before you either build up the courage to walk away from the sport you've loved for so long, or you may jump anyway and again risk becoming another number on Nicks list for a passion long since faded. Wholly shit! Where did that soap box come from and how did I end up on top of it. Christ! I must be loosing it. That will be all. Carry on.
  4. You'll never quit. sure. I've heard that one before. In fact, I think I said that myself before. If your lucky, one day your tastes and desires will change. Perhaps then you'll reconsider your pledge of never quiting. I've seen my share of people come and go. Many of whom where lucky enough to get out of BASE alive. The others where, well, not so lucky.

I don't know if Bat-Grue posted the cots he was quoted (haven't read the whole thread), but it's quite large, the fee. Why is it so large? Is it b/c the skyvan needs to, in essence, be ferried to a different location than Eloy? I don't know where Joe et al dropped their other cars for Good Stuff, but surely it isn't THAT far from Eloy, is it? Is there liability issues involved that is jacking the price? In the past, we have dropped cars only a few miles from the DZ so I doubt that taking the plane far way has anything to do with the cost. While I am only speculating, I assume part of the added cost (if there is any) is a result of the need to clean up the impact sight. It's not as if we can toss a car and just leave it. There may be added costs due to the risk involved, and that is up to skydive AZ to decide. Skyvans don't come cheap. With all the interest in this thread, it sounds as if another junk day might be in order. What do you think Joe? Are you game for it? K

  9. I would agree with that if the 120 day period made previous testing invalid. certainly the design has not changed, it's just that the condition of the unit is in question. Recertifying things is different from certifying them. Other industries are required to perform inspections and recertify items why should parachute be any different? I like calling it recertifying, it demonstrates the weight of what the rigger is really doing. Call it what you want, but I believe the rule book says that every 120 days, parachutes must be inspected for defects, and repacked. Not re-certified. Think about this way. A manufacture goes through great effort and expense to have their product certified to current TSO standards. Even after all of their testing, they attach a label that says something to the effect of, "even if this equipment has been properly packed and deployed, they still some times fail". If after all that effort, the manufactures still say the system may fail, how in the world are you going to "certify" it will work as intended simply by performing an I&R? As an experienced rigger, you should be able to look at what they (the manufacture) have built and say with some degree of certainty that a particular system will (based on your experience) probably work as designed, but are you really certifying anything other than the fact that you looked at it? I think not. Your job as rigger is to inspect for damage and or dangerous manufacturing defects, repair or correct any damage or defect it if it's within the scope of your riggers certificate to do so, and repack it. Thats it. Just my two cents. K

The larger mechanical items such as engine and transmition will need to come out to avoid leaking fluids on impact and also to make the car lighter for take off. Those things may be able to be sold to a junk yard as another means to offset the costs
  11. I think that would be possible with a few body mods made to it. The cost to use the skyvan in addition to all the other logistics is a question best asked of Ms Barnhouse at skydive AZ. Check it out, find out if its within your means to do so and let me know. Oh by the way. In case your wondering why I'm getting involved, I have thrown several cars and a wide assortment of odd/large items from aircraft. I'd be happy to assist (free of charge) if you feel my services could be useful. K

(as airworthy) but you do have to pack it to make it airworthy so...... either will do Well actually, the rigger is not re-certifying the rig, the canopy or anything else. To do that would require drop tests and data collection to ensure that the system conforms to current or improved TSO standards. This is not the case. That would be the manufactures responsibility. AIR stands for Air(as in air out) Inspect, and repack. Kevin

    I think it should be said that the object in question is well know to the authorities and it was burned a long, long time ago. Granted, his was not the most covert of jumps but that changes nothing. The cops are plenty wise to what goes on there. Particulary on a full moon night so I suggest that every one just chill the fuck out.
