HANDBURY ULTRALIGHT PARACHUTE
PROGRESSIVE replied to africapete's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
If I were doing CReW, I have something like this, with the exception of having a low pack volume PDA as a tertiary chute. Pete -
Curved Pin invented by Hank Aschiutto

I had a Piglet 4, for my reserve, which included a full diaper, I could stand it up easily when I pulled down on the rear risers upon landing. I had two reserve rides on it. It was packed in a Rapid Transit System. I jumped a pioneer Merlin as a main. It was the latest and the greatest in 81. Pete -
I would think just to get close enough to getting hooked up under a cheapo is an accomplishment in itself! Very cool!

Sorry to hear the passing of Mike. I knew he was in dire straights when I read about his hard opening and breaking his back/neck. God Speed! Pete

Ditto. What he said!

So that was Jeb's grand-dad! I guess it runs in the family!

If one hundred skydivers were all wearing balloon suits on a successful formation dive, ie, all hooked up in freefall, they could land safely without the use of a parachute. (Don't drop a grip!) Pete (It may require two hundred balloon suits. I forgot. First try one hundred. If I'm wrong, go for two hundred)

I was at the Wall-Mart in Tooele, when I heard them fly on their down wind leg. It was mostly cloudy, but that turbine had a distinct sound. I lived in Tooele, at the time, and you could'nt miss that sound. That was the last time I heard that plane. The following day, I could see the tail of the plane sticking out of the water. The plane literally dove into the Great Salt Lake. I went to the DZ and saw Nathen's Honda parked there, as well as others. I looked inside the club house window a few days later and it was filled with flowers. So sad. After being in this sport awhile, it is not an uncommon event. But that's never stopped me!

It was Skydive Tooele, Utah. Skydiving resumed at the north end of Tooele, and was called Skydive Salt Lake. However, after their fatal plane crash in Jan 2001, Jack Gutherie moved in and is presently called Skydive Utah! This old airport was located next to the Tooele Army Depot. My friend, unknowingly, landed his hangglider within the Depot property and was quickly surrounded by Humm V's equiped with roof mounted machine guns. He thought that those bunkers, that are filled with bombs and missles, were some sort of subdivision going up. Signs surrounding the Depot warns trespassers that deadly force maybe used if caught trespassing.

Final hint/final photo:
-
Another hint: After this DZ had relocated, it had two different DZ operators/owners. The initial DZ owners were killed in a plane crash. That pretty much wiped out their entire club. The second photo is the current DZ.
-
Hint: it closed 1989, and was relocated about 10 miles north.

This was taken in the 1940's. The airport was used for military flight training, through the ROTC program at Carleton College. Just "google" Stanton Airfield. A lot of neat info on this sod airstrip. Melcom, as well as the jump pilot, Clarence, both obviously had fallen in love with this airport. Melcom purchased it from Carleton College around 1942 and Clarence became a pilot, instructor, manager, farmer at the airport after returning home from WWII. Clareance was a machine gunner and got shotup in the war. Melcom was overcome by dementia and at times would wander into the club house, aimlessly. We would have to take him by the hand and return him to his on-field home. Apparently, Melcom was an awesome pilot in his day. http://www.stantonairfield.com/history.html

Simply incredible! Say hi to mom! Pete

Hint: Jesse James shot up the nearby town... (The DZ no longer in located here)

Bump!

Yep, that's the place!

He's taught at Perris, Elsinore, and at the old Temecula airport when Elsinore was flooded out. I thought there was another location that he had also taught at? Pete

I was part of that team! Good times! Pete
