  1. Thanx have you checked the other languages? Very interesting, usefull for international travellers. OVER
  2. "Though it'd be pretty cool to talk dirty in Russian.." If you need some examples I can help you out, just have to find my dictionary. Let's start with this /www.insultmonger.com/swearing/russian.htm OVER
  3. Textile noooooo. Simple framed rucksack for hiking. If they open you say you packed the tent and the sleeping bag in it already. Oh, you've also have alpinist ropes. Maybe you can classify as dirty linen. Let's chnage the topic title to: "Smuggling for Beginners: Lesson 1" OVER
  4. Tax authorities can cause no problem. but the customs office can. Background: Once my father bought a cordless telephone, they have caught him at the border to pay customs at the end they said that either he takes it out of the country -when leaving the country a border policeman/customs officer stamps on a paper that the goods have been taken out of the country- or pay the customs. So, my father went to the border got a stamp spent 5 minutes in Slovakia. U turn and came back with the phone. Maybe the same tric can be played upon arrival of the rig, I will say that I do not need it and I will take it out of the country -a border policman stamps the papers-. And I bring it back through a different border post 10km away. OVER
  5. Of course I would do that, but I must know exatly the tax/customs limits in Austria. If it is let's say 4000USD that would good because it is nearer to the real value. OVER
  6. Not that easy. First for a Hungarian citizen it is very dificult to obtain a US visa. It is easy if you own a nice flat you have a nice car and a nice privat enterprise so you can prove that you will return. There are tonnes of stories of simple toursits who have been sent back directly from the airport from US. Than at the airport in Hungary the customs officer will for sure make you pay customs fee for the rig. Some people that is why made the little trick bought an old rig when leaving the country decleared it, upon arrival to the country where they wanted to buy the new rig they through the old rig into the first waste bin, and came back with the new rig. What did the customes officer saw: one rig out, one rig in. But if the new rig will be in Austria by the time I go there I simple buy an old rig saw a nice label on it with the new rig's serial number. So even if the officer will look at the serial number which I won't think will happen everything is OK. To Austria I can go anytime and if I am lucky at the border during the weekend when thousnads of people are there I won't be noticed. Or the Austrian person will bring it to me and the Hungarian customs officer when seeing an Austrian passport can not say anything, as the person will be a "fake skydiver" coming to skydive to Hungary. BTW: It is really absurd that for a rig with 5000USD value I have to pay 1800USD tax and custom fee! For that money I could buy another container or a canopy. OVER
  7. I hope somebody can help me. So the story is: Sometime in the mid future I am planning to buy a complete rig (that would be my first rig). The big problem I have is: if let's say I search on the net and at Square1 I order a rig. When the send it to me to Budapest, Hungary as soon as it arrives to Hungary the customs officer will open it check it. As its value around 5000USD it exceeds a limit so I will have to pay 25% Value Added Tax and another 12,1% customs/import fee. That is why I can not order directly. My solution is I have a person I trust, living in Vienna, Austria who is an Austrian citizen. He can order from Austria the rig to be delivered to Austria, to him. QUESTION: What is the limit in value after an Austrian (or maybe anybody from European Union) has to pay VAT and/o customs fee? What is the percentage? In Hungary unfortunately it is like 200-300USD. Thanks OVER

  12. I wonder if he has the same attitude towards kayaks? "You know, kayaks, are simple a day of practicing than white-waters..." Maybe we have the bad attitude and this guy is a real pro in every sport and outdoor activity. Look he is a financial guru, a fast learner, has his own ideas, he has the ability to express his view to the public, physically fit for all sports. Vote for him. OVER
  13. OK there is sensory overload, which everybody has in the beginning, especially during first freefalls. But, the guy I mentioned after landing was not even aware of the canopy ride, so that is not a simple overload. That is a rather a system crash. Anyways, I am still not 100 percent sure that our sport is for everyone. (This is not some kind of a snobbism or feeling superior to the rest of the population who are crawling helplessly on the ground in the dirt like spiders, snakes and cockroaches.) Somebody physically not fit, somebody mentally. The problem in my point of view these can danger themselves and the other jumpers. So, somehow these people should treated differently (much more training) or be transferred for tandem jumps. OVER
  14. OK he missed the point, but there are some right thought in his letter. This sport is not for everyone. I have heard of some stundents who after a successfull jump (with a round) when asked could not really tell what has happened to them, they were simply mentally not there. So, he is right that some kind of a quick psychological test or something would be usefull. Maybe if an instructor has 20+ years of practice he can tell right away if somebody is simply unsuitable. The tandem is the best for them. OVER
  15. I did a night jump and prepared the "illuminating device" in an hour from a bicycle flashlight (the one which give continous light), tape , broken plastic ruler and an old binder cover. Also, you might need a chest mount for the altimeter. It worked properly. If you need some help write me. See pic: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=2980; Or read the topic: Skydiving: Safety and Training: I AM BEFORE FIRST NIGHT JUMP PLS HELP. OVER
  16. " Also, do you remember the name of the Czeck canopy similar to the Pap, PC etc.? " Chech version: PTCH-8 Polish version: SW-5 In our club we have an UT-15 jumpabale condition, I think it was made around 1991 so it is not even beyond its recommended service time. As there some jumpers who want to jump with it weplan to put it in a modern 3-ring conatiner. OVER
  17. 9 S/L from 800m and than 3sec from 1000m (as we call blue-green-blue-green-blue-green-PULL, good old first freefalls, when I saw the sleve between my legs going up) and than another S/L next year as a first jump of the next year OVER
  18. In the old days some skydivers developed a good sport for high-wind (non-jumpable). Get an old rig with a round reserve put on yourself open it and try to stop drifting. Fun. Some jumpers were drifted along the whole runway. Reserve is good you can not cut it away. Also I saw a video: At one DZ they had an old car (Trabant, somebody from E-Eurpe might know it) which was used to pick up jumpers who landed far awawy. So, the car's roof was cut down (home made convertible) and steel bars were installed like roll-cage to put your canopy oneto it. So, they put and old BE-8 round reseve on one of steel bars, so the reserve can act like a sail. Result: total failure the car did a nice loop. :-) OVER
  19. Unfortunately a similar case http://www.skydiveua.info/ On February 21, 2003 in Maryinsky Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine, an awarding ceremony was performed. Vasyliy Melnikov was awarded the title of The Hero of Ukraine posthumously by the president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma. Melnikov's family - his young wife, mother and a brother - were present at the ceremony... It was 11.19.2002 when he saved the life of his AFF student at the cost of his one. They broke at the proper altitude but the student suddenly lost his stability and didn’t take any actions to deploy. Vasyliy could reach him only at ~600 metres. At ~450-350 metres he opened the student’s main canopy. Then he started his break-off and without main opening pulled the reserve, but it didn’t inflate. Melnikov impacted the ground and was found passed away. OVER

  21. I read that there were some plans to changed ASh-621R engine to Glushenkov TVD-10B turboprop. The built some planes called An-3. The collapse of the USSR stopped this process. See http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/vvs/an3-01.htm Than I read that recently tht Polyot factory built some An-3, true or not who knows. http://www.aeronautics.ru/an3production.htm OVER
  22. "spooky" ..... Oh no,. nostalgia is more accurate. Best was when they started the engine the self-starter sound like when you brake a piece of metal. To Listen: http://www.republika.pl/celle/bgs/radial-startup.wav OVER
  23. "nice leisurely ride to altitude...." Yes, If during the leisurely SLOW ride you are not thinking about the fuel consumption and jump price. But for your money you got an expensive but, very reliable and safe plane, which can even land w/o engine. OVER
