don't let your bias lead you to misread comments.*** If I can achieve that, I'll be the first one! That particular stereotype (gay promiscuity) is a button (to be pushed) for me. I didn't read your post after that - if I had I would have understood better.

hehe. I know a few lesbians who wouldn't disagree with you! Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Hey - not picking on you - and certainly not thinking anything about this subject is fun. I have so many gay friends - in 10, 20 year relationships - many with kids - who can't be "recognized" as married. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

I did read the very next sentence. it didn't feel like you were saying promiscuity exists across all sexual preferences - it sounded like you were saying gays are promiscuous - but truthfully, so are heteros. But here "my friend that feels that he has to hide a huge part of who he is... just imagine being ashamed of LOVE. being ashamed of your significant other. being ashamed of yourself...." is spot on. When you can't express yourself naturally, openly in everyday life - I can imagine that you'd kind of go to extremes in settings where you could. People who don't have the opportunity to experience love/tenderness/sensuality seek it out in ways they may not have otherwise. Heteros get to glance at someone at the salad bar or catch someone's eye on the sidewalk with only the fear that the other isn't attracted. Not that the other will spit on you, or call you names, or beat or kill you. How many hetero kids fear their parents will reject them outright? If I lived my life in fear or feeling like I had to sublimate a huge part of who I was - would I indulge in settings where I felt accepted and "normal"? You bet I would. That doesn't mean gays are promiscuous. What excuse do the heteros have? Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

You have to admit. The Whitney gave you chills. Damn that was an awesome rendition.

"The carnivore's dilemma" (re. the environment)

This is the real argument. Factory farming is the problem. Thinking that meat should be cheap is the problem. Using 7 lbs of grain for every 1 lb of meat produced is the problem. If we all cut back consumption by 50% (and eliminated ALL fast food) - and refused any meat not from a local/family farmer - then we would make huge strides toward helping our environment - our health - our conscience. Conservative vs. Liberal - interesting perspective
freeflybella replied to billeisele's topic in Speakers Corner
OH FFS! Conservative? Liberal? Please. Extremists are the real problem. Extremists in any area are the real problem. This is why Speaker's Corner makes me so nuts. It's mostly one giant CIRCLE JERK of blowhards from both sides. Who is LISTENING?! Anyone? Then again, I can't stop looking. Also, I respect the fact that a few here really do look beyond the surface, in life, for meaning or understanding. Assholes are assholes - but a damned fine few of you are smart, curious and open. I admire that. So fuck off with the conservative/liberal labels. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi -

"Doing" by "not doing". Is the same thing, ending in the same result = staying poor. I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced what it's like to be poor - should be making any kind of blanket assumptions. And don't try to tell me "you" were poor and "did something about it". I suspect most people who came from extreme poverty and had the courage, the conviction, the strength to lift themselves out of poverty would have more grace and compassion than to sit and judge "poor people" like they're lazy or stupid. Easy Tiger... I understand why she would ask that. She cares for that baby. She's thinking of the baby. Anecdotal evidence aside, smoking and excessive drinking are potentially harmful to fetuses. The urge to protect the "innocent" is strong. Edited: Agree that the mother should NOT be prosecuted. Period. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Fact Check; Demonizing of the Heath Insurance Industry
freeflybella replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
And the more competition in a market, the LESS ability insurance companies have to negotiate lower rates. If an insurance company has a market cornered, health systems MUST work with them to keep costs down. When there is a glut, health systems can hold out for higher prices. This is why single payer is really the only way to go. Prices are set. You don't get an apendectomy billed at $1300 with one insurer and $13,000 with another. When the prices are set across all insurers/health systems/states - insurance companies are forced to compete on SERVICES to the consumer. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi -
I always assumed a raw diet would be incredibly expensive unless you could grow a lot of it yourself. Expensive and time consuming. I would spend the money in a heartbeat if someone shopped and "cooked" for me. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Someone else asked me that question. Preemptive strike I guess? Sure, there are a number of ways the cost of food could become controversial. I'm glad it didn't go there, though.

Well, there's your answer. I have a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of tea, and my wife just has a cup of tea. I know! I have a clif bar and coffee for breakfast. But I'm super vigilant when it comes to feeding a growing baby/toddler/preschooler. As you probably know, the brain does most of it's development by the the age of 5. I just can't imagine feeding that brain Count Chocula. (Although I LOVE it) Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

My 4 year old son eats a 16oz smoothie of organic strawberries, blueberries, banana, orange juice, organic peanut butter, organic yogurt and flax oil - and a bowl of cheerios with almond milk - for breakfast EVERYDAY. I buy my clothes at Target. And have NO extra-curricular activities. I'd rather skimp on other things, too, than food. But I'm stunned at the real difference. I guess I never questioned prices before. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Right. The ending was a bad outcome. But I liked that story as an example of human behavior. Go to 'Fear of Sleep' (linked at top). Mike Birbiglia's section is hysterical. Hopefully will make up for it.

Geez - I'm 5'2" (115lbs) and my child is 4. (It's not like we're eating more than average.) I shop at Whole Foods (I know, Whole Paycheck) and buy as much organic produce as possible. I do buy from the prepared food case. But we're veg so there is no cost for meat. I despise food shopping and bargain food shopping even more (not that I enjoy forking over a large chunk of my salary either) - so I just go to one place. But I really had no idea how much more I'm spending. For those of you with lower bills, do you live in cities? Where do you shop? Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
