  5. You beat me to it..here's some interesting stuff. (I like that song!) The song came during a period of escalating rhetoric and strategic maneuvering between the United States and the Soviet Union. In particular, its international chart success followed two events in Europe that raised fears of the Cold War becoming "hot." First, in November 1983 the Soviet Union misread NATO's annual Able Archer exercise as an actual preparation for a nuclear strike and activated its own weapons for a preemptive strike. Although few outside the Soviet Union understood the seriousness of the response, historians now consider it one of the closest calls with nuclear war and a reflection of the war angst of the time. A few weeks later, in January 1984, the US deployed Pershing II missiles in West Germany, prompting protests across western Europe. In this context, Nena topped the UK Singles Chart with "99 Red Balloons" for three weeks from 28 February 1984 (Strangely, in the USA the german version was more successful, charting at number 2. She never charted again in the U.K., and was placed #10 on the recent Channel 4 poll "The 100 greatest one hit wonders of all time." The song also peaked at #2 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart. Preceded by: "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood UK number one single February 26, 1984 Succeeded by: "Hello" by Lionel Richie Cover versions The song has been covered by numerous bands, most notably by 7 Seconds in English, Siobhan DuVall, NOFX and by Goldfinger in English with a German verse. The latter cover was featured in several films, including Eurotrip (2004) and Not Another Teen Movie (2001) as well as the video game "Gran Turismo 3" (2000) as background music and during various competitions in Nickelodeon's television movie "Rocket Power: Race Across New Zealand" (2002). Trivia "99 Luftballons" was also used in a Telus commercial in Canada in 2003. This commercial featured piglets being lifted up by red balloons into the air, with the German song playing in the background. VH1 Classic, an American cable television station, ran a charity event for Hurricane Katrina relief in 2006. Viewers who made donations were allowed to choose which music videos the station would play. One viewer donated $35,000 for the right to program an entire hour and requested continuous play of Nena's "99 Luftballons" and "99 Red Balloons" videos continuously for an entire hour. The station broadcasted the videos as requested from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST on March 26, 2006. Mentions in the media A cover version is featured in the European release of the 2004 video game "Donkey Konga." On a VH1 one-hit wonders special, host William Shatner joked that this was the only song on the countdown to mention him. He was of course referencing the line "Hielten sich für Kaptain Kirk." ("They thought that they were Captain Kirk.") Played in the 2003 French movie "La Beuze" Played in the 2002 video game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" Sang for a few seconds by Drew Barrymore in the 1998 movie "The Wedding Singer" Played in the pilot episode of NBC's television series "My Name is Earl" It has been featured in a "Saturday Night Live" commercial, advertising a smoke detector that plays the hits of the 1980s. Played in one of the climactic scenes of "Boogie Nights" Features in the reunion dance scenes of "Grosse Pointe Blank" Features as the closing theme for the BBC Radio 4 spoof panel game The 99p Challenge Features in an episode of the television series "Scrubs" (Episode 2.20 , "My Interpretation") Sung by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in the movie "Wedding Crashers" as a deleted scene Played on the Australian countdown programme "20 to 1" on 13 February 2006, in the episode "20 to 1: One Hit Wonders" P. Diddy claims this to be one of his favorite songs. Briefly quoted in the Guster song "Amsterdam" Homer sings this song (in German) in "The Simpsons" episode "The Heartbroke Kid." In a spoof of "American Idol" on "MADtv" Season 8, three celebrity contestants (Courtney Love, Wham!, and Bobby Brown) sang in different styles. Listened by Lorelai in "Gilmore Girls" when she goes into labor
  6. A little old lady goes to the doctor and says, "Doctor I have this problem with gas, but it really doesn't bother me too much. They never smell and are always silent. As a matter of fact I've farted at least 20 times since I've been here in your office. You didn't know I was farting because they didn't smell and are silent". The doctor says "I see. Take these pills and come back to see me next week." The next week the lady goes back, "Doctor," she says, "I don't know what the hell you gave me, but now my farts, although still silent, they stink terribly." "Good", the doctor said. "Now that we've cleared up your sinuses, let's work on your hearing".
  7. Show me, front snap kick.

  12. I would only if it's in a small place (as not in a large stadium, expo-center, etc) I've seen Bob Dylan (1977) for ~$8.75-$12) was alot back then actually. Also, last week got tickets for a dinner concert show w/Cyndi Lauper ($55 ticket, dinner extra) and I know I will have a great time there, plus great dinner (The Canyon Club, Calabassas, Ca! Just have to add, while I'm here on this subject. Saw Robin Trower last week, small place VIP seats at floor level at table (missed dinner but had veggie & dip), friend of mine paid for it, then met Robin Trower outside afterwards. Seeing Alice Cooper same place 8-17 (Ventura Theatre) Tonight is Charlie Daniels at the Fair. Monday is Wynonna at the Fair. The End.
  13. Reminds me of along time ago, I got a club-sandwich from deli, eating at my workbench, tokk a big bite and someone left a toothpick in it and I almost choked on it..I called place to complain about the toothpick and they laughed and hung-up on me!

  16. I really can't do too much where I live at. However, I really need to buy more tools. If you have to go buy a tool to do the job and buy the part, it will always be worth paying someone else to do it. I just paid my truck off and I am going to start replacing things that's not even broke yet, after brakes and rotors replace (they need it) and then major tune-up, then clutch.
  17. How was it? That's one of my favorite places (Ventura Theatre, right?) I am going to Robin Trower this Sunday includes the front row table on the floor & dinner and free for me!!! On another note, The Canyon Club (Calabassas) Cyndi Lauper in Sept. (I may just get two tickets for dinner seats, that is a must go for me!)
  18. Inside of my truck was so hot this week. I can now drive all the way home using two fingers!
  19. Why she sounds nuttier than a squirrel turd!
  20. Eric Johnson - dinner concert, two tables from the stage. The Canyon Club. Can't help but add this, I love going to concerts in small venues, no desire to ever go to a really large auditorium. My list for concerts, and some include dinner is this: Robin Trower ( this Sunday) Alice Copper (next month) - months to follow: Cyndi Lauper Greg Allman & friends JoDee Mesena Gary Allan These are all at small theatres.
  21. I chosed "less than 2%" However, I would not laugh. I have worked at places that did not give raises at one point, they really did not have the money. (btw, their out of buisness..Pratical Peripherals) I just noticed on my last PT pizza delivery job I got a 0.15 cent per hour raise! My day job's review is in 2 weeks. Only time I ever laughed was getting a $20 bonus and had taxes taken out of it!..I believe I posted about it yrs ago! Actually the labor put into making the check and the envelope cost more than the check!
  22. At first glance I thought this was going to be regarding Chi Kung or something. I will have to wait until next month to speak of my 2 day seminar I'm attending at my school with: Grandmaster Henry Poo Yee!
  23. I was at McDonalds once and ordered a large coke and a order large fries. Counter-person still asked me if I wanted fries with that! (and was serious!)
  24. Going on 5 months for me..I don't even keep a exact count. I suggest to go to stop smoking web sites, etc. I've quit lots of times, once for years and just started back up, this is my last time quitting. Getting older and smoking was making me sick!!
