Hyperbole? They're the government's official assessments of what is likely to happen in the event of a hard Brexit. We have Operation Yellowhammer, which the government said was old, outdated, superseded and in any event the worst case scenario. But it turns out they were lying and it's dated August and it's not the worst case scenario, it's their assessment of what the most likely outcome is. They released a copy to the public headed 'worst case' and the Scottish government (pro remain) promptly said "funny, the copy you sent us says 'base case', here public, see our copy". They can't even lie competently. Never mind the doctoring of documents! Apparently you can even track the changes in the meta data on the files they released, though I'm not tech savvy enough to confirm. This isn't the British government, this is specifically the Johnson administration. The civil service union wrote to him yesterday warning him not to make their members break the law. Unprecedented. Then we have operation Black Swan, which really is their worst case scenario assessment and includes imposition of fucking martial law. That's the government's own assessment, not hyperbole. Yes it's their worst case scenario but who in their right mind goes on to walk down that path having assessed that as a risk?

Martial law? I mean, what fucking government knowing takes a path towards the need to impose martial law?

It gets better. Apparently the real worst case scenario in the governments assessment apparently includes rationing of food, energy and fuel and the imposition of martial law.

I've joked for a long time that we should crowd source funding within the skydiving community for an AFF course for someone like Dyson so that they can come up with a packing machine. Sad fact is that they are rich enough to just pay packers.

If this is put together as an impromptu thing then rule out AAD's unless you have a reason to contrive the parachute gear having been put on the plane in the expectation that it would be used. Or want to go through extra steps to contrive a way to jerry rig it. You set an AAD on the ground - the problem is it works on pressure - the point it's turned on it calibrates itself to thinking it's on the ground. If you do it at 12,000ft and then exit, it's going to think it's underground and not work. I suppose you could descend to 1000ft, turn on the AAD, then climb and then exit and accept that instead of firing at circa 750ft it'll fire at more like 1750ft - might work if you're writing a techno thriller. Adds more steps and further peril I suppose. Note AAD's will activate the reserve, not the main and will only be in military or sport gear - a bailout rig will not have one and will have only a single parachute.

Don't forget that he wasn't chosen by the UK but by just 92,153 paid up party members, who are mostly pensioners. He's also going to have to work very hard indeed to remain in office for more than just a few weeks. Both wings of his own party are already threatening to bring him down and the official opposition party has said they are also going be trying to oust him (and on this side of the pond they genuinely have the mechanisms to do so given the current Parliamentary arithmetic).

Not really responding. It was a leaked cable. It's not like the ambassador tweeted to call him an idiot, he was merely giving his assessment to back home. You would hope that ambassadors could give their honest opinions without fear - indeed that's the point of their position. It's not the ambassadors fault the memo subsequently got leaked.

You need to recalibrate your safety feels. Objectively, that was a significantly more dangerous jump than it should have been.

Exactly what I do - one on the left mud flap and one on the right leg strap cover. That way I have one high-left and one low-right. If you need a hook knife you're entangled with something - good to have options in the event your mobility is restricted.

I remember reading some stuff by Richard Hammond on his recovery following his big crash a few years ago. One thing that really struck me was how he said at certain points along his recovery he thought he was doing quite well but then a few months later he would look back on how he was then and think that he really wasn't still right and had failed to appreciate at the time just how far he still had to go. Don't be in any hurry and be humble in your self-assessments. They sky will still be there when you are ready.

My limited experience of US hospitals involved a friend who got too drunk at an after jumping party and passed out and fell backwards out of a porta potty at about midnight. His also drunk friends called 911 when they couldn't wake him up - well he was black-out drunk and had previously passed out in bed in the bunkhouse. Two fire trucks and an ambulance turned up and he got carted off to ER. As one of the responsible adults I went off to the ER to cart him back the DZ where we were staying. We arrived to find he'd already had an x-ray and MRI and as we were shown into the room they were currently doing a ultrasound of his abdomen, lord knows why given his history on presentation. We had to wait for him to sober up as the Dr wouldn't let him be discharged until he'd woken up up but we eventually talked a nurse into letting us just prop him up between us with my mate holding his head up and me waving his arm to the doctor Weekend at Bernie's style. Think the nurses had taken a shine to us as while the Dr was doing the ultrasound we were leaning over our friend telling him to 'walk into the light'. You don't get any sympathy from Brits for drunken injuries, especially not when we have to leave the bonfire to rescue your drunken arse. And especially not when we know damn well you're absolutely fine. He ended up with a medical bill of something like $40,000. All because passed out drunk. Back home he would have, a) probably just been stuck a hospital bed until he sobered up enough to make his own way home given the history on admission and b) it would have been free anyway.

There was at the first too but he got shot.
