  5. Not to start a dispute, lest this congratulatory post be moved to Speakers, but... 'Pit Bull' is not a Breed of dog per se, rather a collection of different breeds linked by their common past of 'bull baiting' and dog fighting. 'Pit Bulls' include American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Dogo Argentinos, and yes, the Bull Terrier. Straight from one of many web sites devoted to Bull Terriers: "In 1830, when combats between Bulldogs and bulls were at there height, lovers of this "sport" decided to create a dog that would attack even more agilely. By crossing the Bulldog with the Old English Terrier and adding a bit of Spanish Pointer blood, they came up with the Bull Terrier. However, Bull Terriers were not the most successful fighters."
  6. Congrats to Rufus, a 5-year old Bull Terrier for winning Best of Show at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Go Bulls!!

  8. Reasons your post got removed -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am posting this because a few people have gotten annoyed that their posts have been removed from this forum recently. I wanted to explain the things that may get your posts removed from this forum... Finally, this forum is to discuss ACTUAL INCIDENTS. It should not be used to discuss more general equipment issues, or the accuracy of the press, or the philosophy of risk, or training programs. Please take such discussions to the appropriate forums. Posts on such topics will either be moved or deleted without warning.

  15. This deserves a quick comment... We've made it thru several days on this (highly controversial) topic, covering 88 posts and no one has degenerated to name calling or verbal abuse! We might be growing up a little... Naaaaaa...
  16. LOL, believe me, you'll find out soon enough. Just walk into your drop zone and say "I just did my first...(fill in blank)" and see what happens I would tell you but I dont wanna ruin it for you.
  17. Hmmm, theyre ALL 'pit bulls'. Must be the scariest dog on the planet! Thank God Colorado is SAFE! I LOVE that last line about 'anything that looks like one...'
  18. OK, I may have gotten most of the point that time. But one question still remains: What dog are we talking about here? This entire thread has been about pit bulls but since there's no breed of dog called a Pit Bull, what dog are we maligning (or defending)? I own one of the 'pit bull' breeds. When people ask what she is I tell them she is an American Staffordshire Terrier. They give me a blank look and say "Oh, wow, she looks just like a pit bull". Ya, no shit Sherlock The APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier), the only recognized breed of 'pit bull' that actually has 'pit bull' in the name, is a pit bull. The Bull Terrier (thats the one with the long nose) is in the PB family. The Dogo Argentino is a PB. The American Bulldog is a PB. There are several other breeds I can list Get the point? So, if we're going to spearhead anti-dog legislation or make it harder to own one of these dangerous dog (thats sarcasm for you internet challenged ) then WHICH breed are we going to start with? Or are we just gonna go after any muscular, thick necked, powerful looking dog? Mastiffs are pretty scary and powerful looking. And theyve been fought in the pits in the past, so I guess theyre pit bulls too. This poist isnt directed at you eeneR. Its just to stimulate some thought, research, or just to make people go 'Hmmm".
  19. I made my pre-second jump as a new AFF-I today! The jumps (I made 3) went well. All were Level 2 jumps. Exits went well, couple of hand signals given and responded to. All 3 pulled for themselves. Couldnt have asked for better. I remember this thought flashing thru my head as we went thru 6000' "Oh my God, I'm holding on to a guy with ONE JUMP!" BEER!
  20. Thankfully someone set you straight on the locking jaw thing. Thank you nicolesheridan! Now lets work on the other stuff... The AmStaff IS a 'pit bull' There's no such 'breed' as pit bull. Any 'fighting' dog can be called a 'pit bull', although several different breeds are commonly referred to as pit bulls, namely the APBT, the American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff), the Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. They all originated from the same general pit-fighting stock from over 100 years ago. Just as the cute little Jack Russell terrier was bred for a specific purpose (fighting badgers), the 'pit bulls' were bred to fight, be it bulls (bull baiting), bears (bear baiting) or other dogs (pit fighting). Animal (dog) aggressive stock was encouraged while human aggressive stock was culled. They were never bred for human aggression. It was discouraged in the strongest sense. These dogs are not for the first time dog owner. They require a strong hand, firm discipline, and socialization. It would be good to note that although Labs are a very popular first dog, they also arent the ideal first time dog. Theyre distructive if left to their own imaginations, require lots of attention, and the willingness to exercise all that pent up energy. (Why is Lucky digging up the yard??) You may have done "quite a bit of research on animal behavior", but it seems a little more research is in your future if you want to be properly informed. Also, this thread MIGHT want to be moved to Speakers Corner. It IS gonna get out of hand...
  21. I just finished (and passed...) my AFF-I course with Jay Stokes. I have had a ton of training in my line of work and Jay's course (regardless of outcome) was some of the best training Ive ever had the pleasure to attend. He is thorough, efficient, and direct. You have no doubt as to what he expects out of you and there is no ambiguity as to what will get you a Satisfactory or Unsat score. I highly recommend him. He is at WWW.Certificationunlimited.com
  22. How tall are you and how well do you fit in the Hubba Hubba. I was looking at that one but it seems short for me. Im 6-01. We currently have a Mountain Hardware Hammerhead 3. Nice and roomy.
