  1. I have WS mod on my wings, done according to the information from the manufacturer. I am atm. at the office but once I get home I can take few shots and post 'em here if anybody else doesen't do so before me. http://www.ufufreefly.com
  2. I wrote this regarding the course to UK BASE board : "Also to be noted about the FJC you posted the link for is that (at least 3 years ago) the course was not a thorough FJC covering all areas of BASE but more a first jump course on jumping in that specific site. During that course I learnt absolutely nothing about jumping low stuff or different types of objects, the course covered only terminal big wall first jumps. So if you have taken FJC there it is absolutely required to find somebody who will teach you the basics for low stuff before you even think about heading to your local objects. With those points taken, the course can highly be recommended though. At that time when I was there Douggs was running things but now Elin has taken over the training. They both are highly motivated in teaching new jumpers and are very good and very strict in their teaching and also overall really cool people (as everyone in SBK is). Also the exit simulator, the pendulator, is absolutely a must before making your first jump. " Hope it helps http://www.ufufreefly.com
  3. I'm not fully aware of the techniques used in this particular application but if it is based on standard relational database (MySQL, MS SQL Server, etc) and web user interface made with any standard web technique (PHP, ASP, etc) it is pretty easy to make it run as standalone application on local computer. First, install the DBMS (for example MySQL) to the local computer and create all tables and schemas needed. Second, install a web server (apache, MS IIS) to the same local computer and configure all needed connections to DBMS and possible plugins for the web interface. And thirdly, set up a local website to your local computer under your localhost where you store the web interface and voila, you have your own private web enviroment for your logbook apllication in you local computer. http://www.ufufreefly.com
  4. Heh, you got us there. :) But it is not 48 meters... It's about 40'ish but still... You got to use what you got. :) Big is a relative thing. :) And here's the video http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/masaari/FINbigwalls.wmv. Enjoy. We certainly did. :) http://www.ufufreefly.com
  5. Once again as it is this time of year it was the time to open up the Finnish big wall season 2007. Last weekend as the weather turned out to be totally calm but a bit cold (-20 C) we decided to hike out to our local big wall and get the season going. 2 jumps were made from our local wall and the jumps were pure awesomeness ! Cool proximity flying less than meter away from the underhung wall with low openings and ~3s canopy rides, just enough time to unstow toggles and shlare the tarp. Weather was beautiful, jumps were fun and the company was good... Just what BASE is all about. Hyvä et lähettiin and I'll try to post some video later this evening... :) http://www.ufufreefly.com
  6. It was not a new canopy design, only the vents changed. I've got both canopies (both MDV), apart from the vents they are identical. After comparing my canopies, measuring lines, I asked Stane in person - he confirmed canopies are same. Changing only the vents is not a new canopy design. Hope that isn't too complicated for you.
  7. Any chance you have pics couple frames before that shot ? Looks like pretty good example of the "throw upwards" technique. I'd be very interested seeing those. http://www.ufufreefly.com
  8. i have not even started. my profile says 42 skydives... only interested. I don't mean to sound like an ass but why would person with 42 skydives be interested in rigging BASE setups ? And what would he benefit from the knowledge ? Take it slow and learn about skydiving and basic rigging skills in skydiving enviroment. There is lot learn there and I wouldn't suggest on cutting corners and going straigth for BASE specific skills. After couple of hundred skydives and experiments on different canopies you'll have much more experience and you'll be able to figure much more stuff out without asking it from the internet. To be honest at 42 skydives you have no idea if you are ever to become even a skydiver let alone BASE jumper. BASE might look cool and sound interesting and sure, it is cool to have heaps of theoretic knowledge about something so extreme like BASE jumping so you can impress your mates on the DZ or chicks at the DZ bar. Don't take this as unneccesary criticism and feel free to ignore this post if you think it was out of order. http://www.ufufreefly.com

Another great loss to our sport. Eddie was really nice guy though I'd only met him once. Fly Free ! http://www.ufufreefly.com

    120' S

I (too) cannot comment pretty much other things than my own experiences. We jumped 38m cliff (124ft) PCA'd last winter over solid ice. We used unvented canopies (Mojo and Troll) and had canopy rides of about 4-5s, there would have been time to pop the toggles but we both decided to land using rears. I did a PLF and my mate landed on his feet. Both were using deep brake settings and conditions were pretty much calm with no wind at all. I'd say it was still pretty reasonable and I'm looking forward on doing it again this winter with my vented Troll to see if there is significant difference in canopy ride. Still, I'd say it has pretty small margin for error so if you decide to give it a go, be sure to have somebody you really trust as your PCA'er. Have fun and don't bounce. And of course... If it's not on video it didn't happen... :) So here's the video http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/masaari/talvimeininkia.wmv http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Breakcord

Would it? Wouldn't that put the tail of the canopy even closer to the object and for what benefit? The purpose of the bungee isn't to short-line the bridle, it's to manage it until it is time to pay out in the deployment sequence. I was referring to a case where you tie the breakcord halfway of the bridle, for example the Superbowl jump that Tom A commented on earlier. I don't see how normal length bridle in that case is paying out on deployment sequence if the breakcord is suppose to hold (almost) as long as you have bottom skin inflation. The subject of the existence of burble on low airspeeds has been discussed pretty thoroughly here and I agree that there are different views about it. I use normal lenght bridle, also on SL but the idea of a shorther bridle came up to me when Tom told the details of Jimmys tests for preparing the superbowl jump. I could think that shorter bridle would have the benefits of "breakcord halfway down the normal bridle" -setup but the jumper would not have to worry about "stowing" the excess bridle and getting it possibly entangled with the exit point. I agree that using a shorter bridle would have the downside of the PC being caught in the burble in case of breakcord premature break but then again if the breakcord (which is halfway down the bridle) breaks prematurely and the "excess" bridle is stowed away with bungee wouldn't there still be a risk of PC getting caught in burble since the bridle is actually shortened by the bungee ? http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Breakcord

The chances of the bridle and/or PC entangling the object are much, much higher using this method. I really do not like it regardless who and where it was used. I know of at lest two incidents where this method could have resulted in two fatalities. TowerTopper can chime in hopefully sharing his view on this (one of the two incident). You could stow the remaining bridel with a rubber band to keep it together. edit: when I say stow I mean to just s-fold the remaining bridel and keep it together with a rubber band... You could of course but wouldn't it be better to make a custom length (shorter) bridle for SL-purposes (and possibly ultra low FF) ? Then you wouldn't need to worry about the excess bridle. http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Breakcord

When they were doing the demo jump at the Superbowl, Apex had to do a bunch of drop tests to satisfy the various powers that were involved in the event. They found that tying break cord at the end of the bridle had a noticeable rate of premature breakage (if I recall correctly, Jimmy told me it was 1 in 20 or something), but that tying the cord halfway down the bridle reduced the premature breakages to the point that they were unable to create any with repeated test drops. They created bridles with sewn in loops to static line from, about halfway down, just for that demo. An easy way to tie in partway down is to put an overhand loop in your bridle and tie to that. That is some very interesting piece of information there. One thing popped up my mind though, if you tie the breakcord halfway down the bridle, how do you control the rest of the bridle (the upper part) and the PC ? Do you just let them hang below the exit ? Doesen't that have very high risk of bridle entanglement with the object since bridle is making a "loop" at the exit point ? That of course is no consern if exit point is "clean" and overhung (like the one in superbowl) but if you are SL'ning from cranes, A's ect it could be an issue. Any thoughts about that ? http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Breakcord

He went to the object the next day and couldn't find the bridle or pilot chute, so there's no way of knowing exactly what happened, but it's almost certain that the bridle and/or pilot chute snagged on the object. I'd be pretty sure that the bridle snagged the object. I had a PC snag on my last SL jump and resulted in torn PC but the topskin and bridle attachment point were fine. I'd guess that in case of PC snag the PC will be ripped to pieces but it will not affect the canopy. http://sunmutsi.ufufreefly.com/tattivaurio.jpg http://www.ufufreefly.com

    "Bad Ideas" list

what would you think of if some base newbie wears the trackin pants/jacket on 100 skydives before using them on base jumps? I would think that "nice preparation" and suggest on making couple of terminal BASE jumps first without tracking gear and then start to use any tracking setup if he feels comfortable with it. Why ? Please remember, BASE is not skydiving and regardless of how much you train and prepare in skydiving enviroment BASE still is another ballpark. Please read and understand Douggs' post (http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1744857;) about modern tracking gear. Modern tracking gear are an awesome tool and help the sport become safer but using them can be deceiving. For example in popular big wall in Norway it is not allowed to use tracking gear on your FJC, why not ? Because it pays out to learn the basic skills with basic setup, basic tracking, solid deployments, basic altitude estimation and so on. I've seen one fatal accident a bit too close where modern tracking gear was definately a factor. The jumper was very experienced and current big wall jumper and still he got it wrong, got sucked low and tumbled at the deployment. I'm not blaming tracking gear for that accident but like I said, they definately were a factor there. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for modern tracking gear and use them myself too. But I'm all for taking it slow too, learn the basic skills with basic setups on suitable walls. You still have the rest of your life to make those cool and long tracks with your tracking setup. http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Morpheus He?

    10/10 Sweet. :) What do we win ? Brand spanking new He's ? :) http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Morpheus He?

It's always nice to guess without the facts so here we go. :) Just few thoughts we came up with Aave and Vesa while it was boring at the office... :) If you look at the pic the rig has no hiprings and narrower cheststrap, also it looks like it has shiny surface (could be the paper too) so it could be made out of parapack... All this sounds like it has been designed to minimize the weight of the system by removing unnecessary metal parts and unnecessary bulk on the materials. Hence the name "He", the chemcial abbreviation of helium. So our guess is it is a new ultralight version of morpheus gargoyle. :) http://www.ufufreefly.com

    Canopy life

Do you think that the type of jumps you mostly do has any effect on the wear of the canopy ? For example if you do 100 slider downs vs. 100 slider ups do you consider the canopy to have have equal amount of wear ? http://www.ufufreefly.com
  19. Is he pitching as he's coming out of a gainer? Or is that just a really f***ed up hand-held deployment?!! The first guess is the winner. :) I'm coming out of a gainer and have just extracted the pc. http://www.ufufreefly.com
  20. Dude, you've been using lots of multiple cameras on many jumps, having it on two different cameras gives you two jumps, right ? :) I thought you started in may 2003 which makes around 3,5 years with my math but then again at winters the days are shorter up there so maybe the years are as well. :) First jump july 2003 so a little over three years and 205 jumps for me. 29 years of age. http://www.ufufreefly.com
  21. Here's one from Pete's camera as well, taken by Annikki. I recon it's a nice shot but makes you wonder for a while what an earth is going on. :) http://sunmutsi.ufufreefly.com/2-way/tatti.jpg Hyvä et lähettiin ! http://www.ufufreefly.com
  22. There isn't actually that much dismantling and reassembling required to switch the canopy between the two rigs. In the most simplest setup you just open your three rings in you Perigee, hook the risers (and canopy) to your skydiving rig and change the bridle and PC to your skydiving bridle and you are good to go. It takes about 5min to go from rig to rig. I'd strongly suggest to think about using skydiving container for skydiving and BASE container for BASE. http://www.ufufreefly.com
  23. Yeah, I think this thread proves that we all should first hear the facts and after that make our conclusions and post our comments on the incident. The fact here is that the Hungarians lost a brother and we should all respect their loss. Hungarians are cool guys and absolutely fun to hang around with. Csaber and rest of the Hungarians, the finnish crew mourns with you guys, our condolences to family and friends ! The only thing that there is to say about this fatality (in my opinion) is that it again underlines the nature of La Mousse. It is high and you can take long delays but it is underhung. As it has being said in the list already in year 2001 "Just a few words about this site La Mousse. It is high and you can fly 9 to 10 seconds if you track like hell. But the pure vertical is not more than 6 seconds." Doing aerials off it leaves you with very small margin for error, from my point of view there are far more better suitable exits on the valley for doing aeros. I've done maybe 30 jumps off LM and with every jump I gain more and more respect for that wall, it's an awesome jump but it can be deceiving. Fly free brother and everybody, please be safe in the valley (and everywhere else too) ! http://www.ufufreefly.com
  24. Wrong, you are counting the Finns in that 30 way. They don't count. Fuck 'em! You are absolutely right ! Especially if they are small and red, they only count for half a person max. So that record is officially 29 and 1/2 way. :) Fuck the Finns ! http://www.ufufreefly.com
  25. I second that ! Another sprained thumb here... So if you reach (I still do), don't reach too far too early. http://www.ufufreefly.com
