Tipping is a shitty system that should be done away with. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry out there has a tip jar. We tip our waiters, barbers, mailman, valet, doorman, and even the guy selling hot dogs on the street corner. We're conditioned to tip a few bucks to the lady who provided a drink refill at the self-serve buffet! We're also conditioned to think that not tipping certain people will result in bad things happening to our property. Normal tips used to be double the sales tax, then 15%, then 18%, and now more than 20% is common. Why can't restaurants simply pay their waiters and waitresses a fair wage and then raise the price of my food accordingly? Sounds like everyone involved in the tipping process gets upset at some time or another. And if you don't like the service you receive, perhaps you should get off your butt and complain to management about it. The USA's tipping system is broken and should be done away with. To answer some of your questions, yes money sometimes gets stolen from the table but it's not a concern for most. Not leaving a tip doesn't always mean they'll rub your food on their butt crack next time, but it if you frequent the place, it's good to tip properly. That's a pretty "heavy" question, Marg! I'm not an economist, nor do I play one on dropzone.com. If opinions are still permitted here, then proceed: I trust that the free market will eventually sort our subprime mortgage, energy, and other associated problems. In the meantime, it would be nice to have the assistance of our elected officials in determining the proper path. I don't believe people affected by the subprime mortage crisis should be bailed out, rather, I'd like to see people be educated so that they can make proper decisions in the future. In regards to oil prices, the free market has already done its job in my family with a downpayment placed on an electric vehicle. Hello, If I remember correctly, the economy was doing really good back in late 2006 before the Dems gained control of Congress. Gas was cheap, the real estate market was doing well, and our country was prospering. Our President doesn't make laws - Congress does. Forget drilling in Alaska and taxing oil companies (the most absurd Democratic concept yet). Rather, get in line to buy an electric or extended-range electric vehicle at a cost of about 2 cents/mile to drive. Problem solved. I applaud the oil companies and their record profits.
