  1. I'm not an instructor. (disclaimer) The Safire 1 loaded simularly was an early canopy of mine. If you are of average skill level or better, I think it is an appropriate choice. OF COURSE, you should ask an instructor that knows you. Couple of things. 1. Roll the nose!!! The Safire 1 much like the Sabre 1 could sometimes SMACK ya. 2. You are at the perfect level to take a canopy course. I have many more jumps than you and just signed up for one. I wish I had taken one earlier. And with the rash of recent deaths under fully functioning canopies, I finally got off my ass and signed up. Good luck and enjoy!! 3. One of my rigs has an RSL the other doesn't. I have a Cypres on both. I toss by 3500 unless there is a traffic issue on bigger ways. I try to toss by 3000 even on bigger ways. Every time I go below 3k without an open container, I consider myself below the hard deck. Both of my cuts have been above 2k. 10 yrs ago 2100-2200 was common, but guess I as I've gotten older I'm more conservative. 4. I'm sorry, I'm on the wrong thread. 5. I just demo'd both the Sabre 2 190 and a pilot 188. I bought the Pilot. I actually thought it was a bit more responsive and really forgiving on landings. As I've gotten older I don't heal as well so I want softer landings. Ryder Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! Muff Brother# 2706 Dudeist Skydiver# 121.5
  6. Hey Dan welcome back!! I took a long break also. When I came back I found a first jump course to audit. I got in the harness for emergency procedures and got to review basically everything. Some would say it was overkill, but I wanted to make sure I remembered everything. Good luck! Ryder Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! 11. I thought about what I previously wrote. So I quoted myself.......ummm vodka, The one thing I have an issue with is improperly maintained jump planes or improperly flown planes (outside wt and balance). I've been at 2 DZ's that had crashes. I've also had one die on take off and another I had to emergency exit @ 1500 ft due to fuel exhaustion back when I was a 100 jump wonder. In my opinion, I pay for a ride to altitude in a properly maintained commercial plane. If it isn't maintained properly, they deserve what they get. Before I get flamed, I'm talking about negligence, not honest mistakes or the fact that anything can happen to anything mechanical. For the record I am a pilot and have deadsticked an engine out into a cow pasture. The plane was properly maintained and the piston through the cowling @ 5500 ft was an act of God. 12. Skydiving is a very technical sport. Most people think it's just simple gravity, but it's not. You being an advanced diver, you are used to technical sports. Concentrate on the technicalities of the sport and this will help you alliviate the fears. Blue Skies Ryder Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! 13. so please dont lump all us young jumpers together either...not directed at you paul, just trying to make a point Johnny, I definately don't lump young or old jumpers together. Only smart and not smart jumpers. To me a smart jumper is one that studies, takes all advice under consideration and doesn't progress too quickly for his skills. The non-smart is...well I guess we've already covered it. Ryder Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! Muff Brother# 2706 Dudeist Skydiver# 121.5
  14. I started this thread and I can tell you there isn't any pleasure. While the name "I told you so" could have been better chosen, the idea is to keep records of the people that were warned, didn't heed the warnings, and hurt themselves or others. Anything to prove to "experts" like DocPOP that these warnings aren't here to prevent them from having fun. And what the hell would Bodhisattva420 know with 40 jumps in 2 years?? Go tell Lew Sanborn that he's been an obstructionist to the sport. People like DocPop are asking for trouble. They are selfish with this sport they love. No matter what happens, DocPop and people like him are going to hurt the sport. There are only 2 possible outcomes: 1. He turns out to be as good as he thinks and lives. Then he continues to spout his ridulous BS about and 6 of his followers die... 2. He goes in and the entire sport continues to look bad. More regulation is forced upon us because we don't have the will power to self-regulate. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Maybe I'm colder than most on these post, but If someone has been continually warned and goes in, I won't lose a seconds sleep about it. Natural Selection I guess. 15. If any of ya'll has lost a child, then you know the pain is the worse you will ever feel. It's not natural to bury your child. Often the parents need someone to blame to get through the grief. It's not right for her to sue, but I've been sued several times in 20+ years in the medical profession and it's always the result of grief. I agree with NWFlyer about explaning the sport to your family. It's probably the answer. Explain that no one is at fault if you die. That you died doing something you love... 20. We need a permanent "I told you so" thread in the incidents forum. It would list all the 100-300 jump wonders that fly canopies way to small for them. Especially the ones that have told the experts to mind their own business!! You know, the people that think they are better than Germain or any of the other legitimate experts....Reminds me of the country song "Back when I knew it all" Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! 21. There are places here in the US that don't impose ANY age restrictions. (Wisconsin) I've seen it. The restrictions are not law, they are liability and manufacturer imposed. And we all know there is a member of the USPA board that had all 4 sons at expert level jumping before they were 14 y/o. I used to jump with 2 of them. AND THEY WERE 2 OF THE BEST JUMPERS I'VE EVER SEEN!!! The US is a liability driven society Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! 23. I really hate when someone uses the sport we all love to commit suicide. Forget for a second that there is a fellow skydiver in such a bad place that they see death as the only choice. I hate this for them obviously. I wish they could get the help they need. BUT!!! I really think it's selfish when someone does a no pull for suicide. The one I'm familiar with, cut his reserve ripcord and stuffed his pilot chute where it wouldn't come out. I guess he didn't want to chicken out and change his mind. I think it's awful for the sport. It gives a bad impression of skydivers in general. I'm not un-sympathetic to the feelings of the poor misguided soul, but it pisses me off that he uses skydiving as a tool to end his life. 24. This is something I have given a lot of thought to. Though I'm not sure my thoughts are very well organized. I left the sport 9 years ago because life was getting in the way. See, I've always been an all or nothing guy. Problem is, you often sacrifice so much that way. Family, relationships, friends. My wife wasn't supportive and we ended up splitting for a year. I changed jobs and relocated so I could be near a turbine. I left the sport after a non-skydiving related injury. It left a whole in me. It's very difficult to stay close friends with your skydiving friends once you've quit jumping. I have just come back into the sport about 20 jumps ago. I'm trying to keep balance. I only have a weekend DZ near me, I'm trying to only spend one day per weekend at the DZ. I find myself thinking about skydiving all the time. I read everything I can get my hands on. I watch all the gear ads. I bore all my non-jumping friends...lol I also am a person that needs a goal all the time. So I'm looking at instructor rating classes and thinking about what direction I want to go. Instructor, TM, Camera, RW team, learn to Freakfly, looking at rigger courses... It's ridiculous...lol It's hopeless, I'm a skydiver... Take chances, just do it with all the information to make good decisions!! Muff Brother# 2706 Dudeist Skydiver# 121.5
