  1. I worked the Mike Zang record also. I packed for 10 hours straight (and I hate packing). I was exhausted and I can't imagine how tired Mike was.

  2. When I first started jumping I wore glasses. I had prescription goggles and I also had a Oxygen A-1.

Both were fine options. The A-1 fit over my glasses easily.

10 yrs ago I had lasic surgery and now I wear sunglasses under my A-1.

Try on several helmets before dropping a bundle one one. Demo one if you can.

    Have fun.

Don't get me wrong. Those are great sentiments and I don't think anybody wants to see someone else get hurt, but the question wasn't about whether you would rescue someone else or whether you would guess about the existence or lack of an AAD. The question is about *you* being unconscious in freefall and what you would want someone else to do for you. I don't want someone to try to rescue me. There's a fairly small percentage of us who have the knowledge and skills required to pull off such a rescue with any reasonable degree of certainty. How would you feel if you woke up in hospital after being saved by your AAD only to find out that "Bill" lost altitude in his mad dive to save you and is no longer with us.

That would be a really sucky scenario... I guess it boils down to a personal decision on the person who sees you. It is a question that not many people have had to face. I will stand by my decision.............. I am VERY confident of what MY decision would be and I would back that up with my experience and my flying skills which include some pretty damn good altitude awareness and ability to catch people. I do have a very good chance of catching up to almost anyone;)

Yeah that would be a sucky thing. And I wouldn't commit suicide to try, but I WOULD try.

I've seen too much death in my life. I know what I could live with and what I couldn't.

I could live with failing, I couldn't with not trying if there was a hope that I might catch them.

Just my feelings. Your milage may vary.

  5. I'm just lucky I married a woman hornier than me.

Never been cut off, but after 3 kids and 20 yrs, sometimes it gets pushed to the back burner for both of us.

Sometimes I say " I'm tired and you take too long":P

If I'm ever in freefall with you and you lose consciousness would you rather me pull your main or go silver? Or let your AAD do the work?

I'm surprised JohnMitchell hasn't chimed in on this discussion yet - he had to make that very decision last year.

Bear in mind that the two people involved in this save both have 20+ years and 4000+ jumps and multiple instructor ratings. They had the skill and experience to pull this off (and in this case, the altitude as well). As skybytch has pointed out, that may not always be the case, and in a different situation with different players (or an unconscious victim who is much more unstable) things can end very differently and very badly.

I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that those of us less experienced that John and Jeff should do nothing if ever in that situation.

I'm sure you were just encouraging us to be careful:).

P.S. John and Jeff are heros!

  10. Believe The jump in question is #6.

SB that video is incredible. I have more jumps and don't always fly that well. They really learned a lot in a short period of time.

    Where was the course?

No you missed it...I paid NOT to see them!!! Your banned!

Statuate of limitations has run out - 4 years ago every one with a phone got those . . . Why you wanted to pay good jump money for them . . . that is your thing . . . But you are still banned for buying PA pics.

OK! I lose, but I had never seen anything that small and even though I heard about it, I had to see it for myself....It's a train wreck... I didn't believe anything that small could exist!!!!

  • Frankly, I guess I'm not smart enough to understand all the issues effecting the AAD debate. I am somewhat a techie, but damn, the techie details here are beyond me...

I have a cypres 1 in each of my rigs. I've never needed them and hope I never do. All my mentors used cypres and so do I.

They've been around a long time.

    1. Roll the nose!!! The Safire 1 much like the Sabre 1 could sometimes SMACK ya.

On allof the safire 1s (and 2s) I've jumped, you should not roll the nose because it then takes 1000+ ft to open. YMMV, but I wouldn't start out rolling anything. Safire's are not known to slam people, rather they are known for soft openings. And even if yours does, rolling the nose only gives off-heading openings IMO, again, YMMV, but I wouldn't take this as standard advice.

It was enough of an issue that there is a $400 canopy mod for the Safire 1's to make the openings better.

Jump it and decide for yourself. Routinely rolling the nose of the safires does not cause any of the complications you mentioned except for a little longer snivel. I've never hit a 1000' though.

Every time I go below 3k without an open container, I consider myself below the hard deck.

In my mind, there's a difference between a min pull altitude and a hard deck. A hard deck, IMO, is when you have no choice but to proceed with EP's.

Your are right. I guess in my mind the Hard deck is very jump specific. I did notice someone else say the same thing.

But you are right, my absolute hard deck to have a canopy or start EPs is 2k. It's the way I was taught and it's still in my head.

Thanks for pointing out the difference.:$
