  2. Thanks for that. I'll just ignore Nat Geo, Sci American, and all the other mainstream science info I find. I'll choose to believe your "science skeptic" site run by the TV presenter who calls herself "Jo". Because she has a pretty face and therefore MUST be correct. Actually Jo did not write the piece linked, Professor Brice Bosnich did. Since when did being a professor carry any weight in SC? I never said it did I was just pointing out that the weather forecaster did not write the article. gowlerk was attacking the wrong messenger Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  4. I agree totally, thats why the comment "but he's not a climate scientist" is so annoying to me. *** In any case, the tweet demanded that she "learn some actual SCIENCE!" which is why it was funny. An astrophysicist has learned some actual SCIENCE. OK, fair comment. But it would have been better placed in "Joke of day" instead of this thread. Do you understand that having a PhD in Astrophysics means you have a very good grasp of how gas, liquids and liquids behave? She studies climate on a universal scale. That's kind of like Cruz asking NASA why they're studying the Earth's atmosphere instead of only space. Earth is a pretty important part of space when it comes to our priorities. I didn't realize there was a universal climate. Are we affecting that as well? You're just being petulant at this point. I'm sure you realize that the atmosphere is made up of gases, vapor, particulate matter and abides by the laws of physics. These are all things that an astrophysicist understands very well. What makes you think I am being petulant? You said "She studies climate on a universal scale." What actually is "climate on a universal scale"? This is what she actually does ( from NYT) : I would have thought climate ends out side of our atmosphere. That is not to say things far from our planet, the sun, cosmic rays, etc could not have an effect on our climate. However, these outside influences have been ruled out as the main cause of warming in the earths climate. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  7. How does a PhD in astrophysics help in understanding climate change? When a scientist makes a claim against AGW the people here are quick to say "but he is not a climate scientist!". And wasn't that guy who claimed global warming was due to cosmic rays an astrophysicist? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  8. "Expert" Says Rising Rapes In Sweden Due To Global Warming Not Soaring Muslim Immigration I could not be bothered to read such drivel myself, but such articles can only harm any attempts to take AGW seriously. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  9. Yes I agree, but in the text in your original post they did not say decades of a steady rise in temperature caused the melting. They said a lingering heatwave caused the melting. So why do you post the consequences of "climate" change and not the consequences of "weather"? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  10. So is a heatwave that lingered for the whole of july weather or is it climate? If it is weather then your title should be "unexpected consequences of heatwaves". But it wasn't, so I guess you believe the heatwave was actually a long term temperature rise, which would then be climate change. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  11. Why are you so pessimistic? I can see solar providing 100% within 60 years. If Saudi Arabia covered a substantial part of their desert with PV they could use the power to make synthetic liquid fuels. It's only a question of EROEI. As long a that is positive it's doable. so you greenies are perfectly ok with destroying all that habitat for desert-dwelling creatures in one fell swoop? It's a better option than destroying the whole planet with nuclear waste. Besides, you would be able to leave a large part of the desert untouched. 50 square miles of PV would produce a heck of a lot of power. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  13. Global Warming And Food Prices Interesting, even if it is not entirely scientific. Note that this is looking at the global view. Locally you may have the opposite effect. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  14. You only stated the age and not how many jumps the canopy has. Age and number of jumps are not the only factor. Where was the canopy packed (indoors/outdoors), beach jumps, packed in the dirt, left out in the sun. All these things can degrade the material and reduce the flare. Ask a qualified rigger to look at it and she/he should be able tell you if the canopy is OK or not. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  15. This of course is only looking at the risk of dying. All the other carnage (broken legs, pelvis, spine etc.) I have seen clearly shows me that Skydiving is not a safe activity. You just have to ask yourself is the risk worth the fun you get out of it? As time goes on I find myself coming ever closer to the answer of "no". Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  16. I took an older model ( Hero 2) snorkeling and the picture quality was terrible. Nothing was in focus. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  17. I was looking at this helmet recently. One problem is the mounting inside. If you get a hard knock to the front, you will get a nice GoPro print on your forehead. A fellow skydiver at the DZ said he knows of one death associated with things mounted inside the helmet that transfered the impact force directly to the users head. This helmet does has some padding between the camera and the head. In my opinion though its not enough. There needs to be some sort of plate to prevent the edge of the GoPro digging into the wearers head. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  18. Most vidiots at our DZ use CX110 or CX115 for video and SLR Canons or similar for photos. GoPros are used for backup photos/video. I don't take the SLR on a Tandem unless the pax has ordered photos, which is rare at our DZ. I personally prefer the Sony CX for video because I don't like the fish eye look the GoPros have. The photos from my canon 350D are far superior to what the GoPros produce despite having fewer pixels. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  19. OK, I'll bite. It was probably a coordinated attack from the PPT in China hoping to prevent the shanghai index falling further. The main target was the NYSE, United Airlines just got caught in the cross fire. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  25. Comparing time taking part in the sport or number of jumps to number of journeys in my opinion does not really work. You are then trying to break down how you fit in with the wider group that takes part in the activity. I always look at it this way ( all info based on German statistics). There are 57 million people in Germany with a driving license ( ok, not all of them drive), there are about 4000 deaths a year on the roads. So if you drive a car you have about a 1 in 14000 chance of dying in a single year if you drive.. There are 11,000 people with a skydiving license (ok, not all of them still jump), there are about 5 deaths per year skydiving. So you have about a 1 in 2000 chance of dying in a single year if you skydive. Who are the unlucky ones in either activity? Certainly in skydiving it's not just the inexperienced or the one time jumpers and the same goes for car drivers. You are correct sir, you don't lie to your mom. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
