I have heard tell of a DZ where the manifest or will walk up to a TM as they are suiting up a TP; hand the TM a $20 and say "Oh, here's the tip your last passenger left for you" as a way of"assisting" the current TP with the idea of tipping. Even when the last passenger hasn't really left a tip. I knew strippers that did that back in the day, trying to increase their tips...doing it at a drop-zone is ever MORE low-class! I may be off base here, but I kinda believe that 'asking/scamming' for compensation above an already agreed upon price for a service is pretty trailer parky. (yeah I know, whatdaya expect) If it comes...bonus! I've not tipped at a high end restaurant where the food was bad and the service worse. The ma-trade asked the reason with some indignation in an attempt to shame a gratuity out of me, which was loudly unsuccessful... AND hopefully, my tirade prompted other diners with a similar complaint to do likewise. We chartered a 5 day sailboat cruise once in the V.I. with a similar outcome... I was extremely dis-satisfied with the entire thing and when the 'Captain' who didn't know how to sail in the first place tried to make an example out of me, in front of a group waiting to disembark on a charter with the same company. I AGAIN went into great detail regarding my complains, and offered they were lucky I wasn't asking for a REFUND, considering what was promised and subsequently delivered. On the other hand, I once tipped a SCUBA boat crew in Hawaii over a hundred bucks for a 4 hour dive trip, because they OBVIOUSLY went well out of their way to show us a wonderful time...THEY earned it. If and when a tip comes along, that's fantastic! ...but to me and others, wavin' a tip flag is like running a bait & switch scam. That may be fine for people buying trinkets and baubles, but for those of us who are looking to purchase a Porsche 911 and who do not want to waste endless hours online waiting for "those closing minutes", finding out EARLY what the set reserve price is is a tremendous help. I bid, set my maximum bid, then have the system tell me when I have been outbid and if (ever) the reserve has been met. I fucking hate E-bay, but there are a good number of Porsche 911's that come across the block. I'm SHOCKED! I don't think it's appropriate to make sarcastic jokes on threads created by newbies. I'd agree, but even to a n00b, something like that HAS to make ya ask yourself...did I miss 1/2 a class or his that guy a moron? Thankfully people like erdnarob understand the implications and have the capacity and willingness to break it down the right way! Why would you think the OP missed anything or was a moron? He posted that he has 2 tandem jumps. He's not been through a FJC. Nobody tried to teach him much about the tandem gear he used for his 2 jumps. And while erdnarob's answer may be more complete than some, was it really necessary for this OP to have this level of detail when we know that he hasn't been through a FJC, and have no reasonable expectation that he ever will? I can appreciate the distinction that pulling the reserve pin is not the whole deployment, but is that level of detail really needed to answer this OP's simple question? He wanted to know if cutaways open reserves automatically. Simple answer is that it depends on the gear. Some gear tries to open the reserve for you when you get rid of a main, and some doesn't. The rest of the details most likely fell on deaf ears in the first place anyway. Do we really think the OP was even listening much less appreciating the finer points of the extra 16 posts? Didn't mean the OP would ask the 'moron' question of himself, but rather aim it to the sarcastic posters, nor that he missed anything... instead a tongue in cheek 'WTF' after reading the nonsense of a reply or two he got. And I can't speak for others, but in my case yes...I read & studied everything I could get my hands on before AND all during the student phase. My high school library had back issues of Parachutist that I read cover to cover many times, I knew who people like Lew Sanborn, Ted Strong, Cheryl Sterns were even before paying my 50.00 for a lesson...today that kind of info is even more readily available. I asked my FJI questions regarding the, cape-wells sticking, the 'Stevens line' and the AOD, during the first class...
