  7. Chuck Feser passed peacefully in his sleep following an extended battle with cancer. Chuck started jumping in 1978 and was a familiar face at Midwest boogies for decades. Member of the Lincoln Sport Parachute Club & Liberty Parachute Team...Chuck held many ratings and was one of the best 'all round' jumpers I know. The first time I met Chuck, he picked me up at the Omaha airport in his ratty ole T-Bird. We had to kick over the empty pizza boxes and soft drink cans so I could sit down…we were headed to Malvern, Iowa to get ready for an airshow. The conversation was nonstop the whole way there…on arrival at the team leaders place, Doug came out and tried to make a ‘formal’ introduction. Chuck and I looked at each other and bust out laughing. In that short hour long ride, though unspoken… we both realized we’d be lifelong friends and couldn't wait to get it started. I got to work with Chuck a lot in his 20-some years we jumped demos together, with Liberty Parachute Team. He was the consummate professional, no task to difficult ~ no detail overlooked. Trust is paramount when jumping out of an airplane at night with fireworks strapped all over you…with Chuck it wasn't even a concern. He was one of the best! We had a decade long tradition of jumping a little airshow in northern California together, just the two of us. …we did it for no pay just expenses, because it gave us a few days to ‘catch up’ and just have fun. I can’t help but smile as I recall in minds eye, Chuck in his jumpsuit on a 95 degree afternoon, parachute over one shoulder - 40 pound flag over the other - With a tri-tip sandwich & a large coke in his huge paws…down on one knee talking to some 7 year old kid about Skydiving and making that kid feel like he was the most important person on the airport. With Chuck kindness was an instinct, his strength of body and spirit unmatched. As with everyone in his world, he made my life better just by being himself. Ole Hoss set the bar pretty high, no question there! Go easy my brother…I’ll see ya when I see ya. 5 Left & CUT! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  8. You could get better results with pictures of naked women. Well there IS a 'Boobies' thread in Bonfire! I dunno...the Cooper thread is like another channel on TV - if ya don't like what's on it, don't watch it. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  9. Hi Mike ~ I may be using the wrong term then... I have several jumps out of a friends Sundowner that has a devise that looks like a small tab on the top outside of the right door. It's spring loaded and situated in a manner that allows the wind across the fuselage to push it rearward, engaging a recessed hook in the door frame to a bar on the door. The thin blade of an swiss army knife works well to slide the hook forward out of position allowing the egress handle to open the door. Sundowners had a problem with the door opening unexpectedly in flight...there were a couple of ways to address that - maybe the devise on his isn't factory installed or fleet wide. I sent him an inquire email for the specifics...but it's definitely there. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  10. You may find this interesting~ http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2482853#2482853 Thanks, T, I loved the story. And the pix. Your Dad still with us? No he passed a few days after I wrote that...going on nine years ago - - a little further in that thread I describe the funeral. The 2nd page of the thread I tell about visiting the WWll memorial in D.C. a week after Dad was buried. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

  16. Indeed fun stuff ... gotta try the phone book thing...just looking for a concrete 3 foot concrete Keep in mind the stuff today is a lot different than the old daze...takes a lot less to do much more. It's not nitro anymore. Interestingly enough...I'm told that for the most part the commercial stuff is stronger than the military grade. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  17. HEY I GOT AN ANSWER! ~ ~ I sent out a few emails shotgun style to addresses I could nail down relating to the movie. Got a reply from a production assistant! 'Likely scenario / best recollection' type thing - "Period props and costuming" are pulled from one of many such inventories made available to the set director. It was probably donated to, then purchased from a 2nd hand clothing thrift shop type of store. ~ *Here's the cool part... Since he WAS a Skydiver they wanted to portray that part of his personality. THAT SHIRT was chosen over some others because of the large bold lettering and the contrasting colors... fine line art & lettering don't come across as well on screen. (take note tee shirt designers) ~ ~ So I'm guessing it was the new tee shirt I gave Dr. Haberstroh back about 1986! Dr.Jack was one of my Advertising professors, wrote the book "Ice Cube Sex" which is about subliminal advertising. He'd moved to L.A from SIU about the same time I moved to San Diego...we stayed in touch during the years after graduation and I was invited to his home for dinner a few times We became friends at school when he realized I was a Skydiver...seems he'd opened the first hang glider school on the west coast as a younger man. He'd brought his wife out to the DZ near school a few times to hang out and watch. Got him an observer ride once, which greatly helped my GPA. He passed away a few years back, probably never wore the shirt & it was likely donated to someplace by his widow. My shirt is famous ~ ~ COOL BEANS! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

  19. Just 'jumping in' with another opinion Robert... Road flares back then were significantly different than what's available now...for that matter so is Dynamite. Flares came in at least 3 different lengths giving various burn times. I'm not positive on the exact lengths but 6, 12 & 18 inches is a good guess. State police & wreckers always used the longest ones. They were a pain because of their length...they would tend to crack and break if bounced around in a car trunk too long spreading the contents all over. They'd crack open because they were a Paraffin wax coated paper ...just like old dynamite. The end caps were metal not plastic and once removed you could pop off that little black blob of striker material from the stick...sometimes on cheaper or old flares it would just fall off. Back then dynamite came in 8 inch sticks 1.25 inches around. There were 3 different grades 30% 40% 60% - which denoted the amount of nitro inside. It came in several different colors but the most common was a brownish grocery bag type of thing. I've also seen and used dynamite that was orange and various tones of red. Popular misconception by people that were unfamiliar with it was the different colors pertained to different grades...they did not. The thing dynamite and road flares kinda have in common is that they both would tend to get darker in color with age and or improper storage. The chemicals would start leaching into the paper. They both also had writing on them. Anyone who's actually handled old dynamite can tell the difference between that and a road flare by sight, touch and smell - however someone who's only frame of reference is Hollywood movies and television shows might easily mistake them at quick glance. Doing farm work I was rigging dynamite before I could drive a car... I learned the important differences in grades the hard way, when instead of loosening a stump for removal I turned it into half a ton of toothpicks and shattered all the west facing windows in the house. OOOPS Directing the blast is art & science. Lay a stick of dynamite on the driveway and set it off - all you have is a burn mark...lay a phone book on top of the stick, and you get a 3 foot hole in the concrete. You can light dynamite on fire and it won't explode it just burns...and shooting it with a pistol to set it off is a Hollywood fantasy. Takes a somewhat faster & focused explosion to set it off - blasting caps work well by design but det-cord which burns at 20,000 FPS is quite effective and cheaper. Fun stuff! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  20. Hated paste as a kid... But I hated eating most things. No... Been doing a lot of wood working today. It's been a while so I ended up using way to much glue. Squishing out under clamp pressure. Tearing it off my hands and arms for half the evening. Starting to look pretty yummy. Lol Interesting thread. I've always been a picky eater and really hasn't changed much. I do TRY to be open to trying other things but for some reason it doesn't work. I've never had a salad in my life. Can count the actual pieces of fresh fruit I've eaten on one hand... I'm conscious about nutritional intake and grind up fruit with supplements etc. but for whatever reason, mostly I just eat cows and taters. No lectures though... Everyone for the most part who blasts me for my diet - is looking UP at me when they do it... And backing away when I blast back! Lol ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

  22. It is...I've done it many times, even with the door on. But now you're getting into a gray area as far as SHOULD YOU do it. Takes a bit of practice spotting a low wing with the door on...gotta train your eyes to see through the wing. Sundowner or Warrior for example. Takes a savvy pilot because he needs to go into a rather radical slip to let you get the door open enough to get out. There is a considerable chance of hanging up something in the process...snag your reserve handle and you both could have an interesting day. Some of them have a wind-lock that won't allow the door to open if in flight...can be circumvented with a pocket knife but is all that really worth it? The larger Pipers like a Cherokee with a rear door can be flown without the door and safely jumped...there's paperwork involved to do it with FAA ok. How about ya find someone with a 2seat powered parachute - cheaper - easier - more fun! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  23. Thank you. Mike and I wrote that article to answer questions just like these. As you can see, some of the older jumpers still refer to "NOTAM" rather than "notification". They are not the same. OLD huh?! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
  24. Well....it's not a big deal as long as everything goes as planned. The pilot may end up career wise ~ flyin' a cargo plane full of rubber dogshit out of Hong Kong if things go sideways as far as crater making. Just sayin' ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
