  1. If you want feedback on terminal reserve opening injuries, a more appropriate thread title may help. I've had 2 terminal openings on an undiapered 26 ft. Navy Conical round reserve that did not hurt. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 2. You don't have to have a metal cutaway handle to have a cutaway handle with a hole for the thumb. I use a loop cutaway handle that is no heavier, perhaps lighter than the normal pad handle, so that aspect of a good handle is no problem. Some cutaway pads have started to have holes/pockets to insert a thumb. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 3. I flat/stack pack, and roll the 4 outer cells in toward the middle on both sides. Nothing about packing a canopy on its side prevents that. 4. I'm surprised at your perception that it is, in effect, too low profile for winter glove use. It seems to have plenty of 'opening' space to me. Shouldn't this mean that a conventional pad cutaway handle would be troublesome? I think the type handle I use has been seen most often on Racers. I asked VSE what other metal handles they had to offer, explaining that I don't like the triangular handles (they don't seem low profile to me), and they suggested the handle I now have in the pics. I don't know where they purchased the handle, it should be considered an option for any rig, since it fits the standard pocket. I've used a cutaway pillow in a real emergency without problem, but I now have a loop cutaway handle. I've used both of my alternative handles, and liked the result very much. 5. It has been shown that it is possible to hold onto a pillow with a great deal of force, but I think that finding might not be so true if the pillow must be grabbed and force applied very quickly. When I need to grab a handle fast and be able to pull hard, I want something that allows me to grab it using that wonderful opposable thumb. I think that much of the objection to the standard D handle is minimized when some alternatives are available, see pics. I think this version of the low profile metal handle is great, and much better than the triangular alternatives I've seen. It just doesn't stick out that much, but is still very easy to find in a hurry. The second pic shows both for comparison, they fit in the same pocket. 7. No, I didn't consider total mals to involve both main and reserve. I don't think that most jumpers use that definition. I was simply mistaken about whether the PC in tow was in the partial or total category. A quick check of the SIM confirmed that the USPA considers it a total, because the bag isn't out of the container. The pilot chute was doing its job but the bridle was misrouted, wrapped around a closing flap, causing the container to be locked closed. Wouldnt this be called container lock rather than pilot chute in tow? I mean sure it was in tow, but not due to being uncocked or in the burble... I would say that applying the term "PC in tow" does not require the knowledge of why it is 'in tow'. 8. Even if the normal activation force for a mini ring system should present no problem for a jumper, I think it is still enough higher than the std system to be a disadvantage. I have found my 2 cutaways on std 3 ring systems to be effortless, and I like it that way. I think there is great value in having lower pull forces, but obviously most do not agree. Perhaps if everyone saw pictures of what the degree of cable 'suck through' was for different loads, that would be scary enough to make some consider if mini rings are worth being fashionable. I would bet that most jumpers are unaware of the 'suck through' that occurs, thinking that extra pull force is just due to additional frictional load on what they assume will be always be a straight cable. The idea of having to pull/extract the cable through/past such a 'suck through' bend is not comforting to me. edit - I think the Aerodyne rings are not catching on because they are ugly. Sure, it shouldn't matter, but it does. They have bad form. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 11. If you read the post you would see it was a container lock, which is certainly a total mal... I did read the post, I just forgot that a PC in tow is also considered a total mal. 12. The flat shape of the floor would not be very good at withstanding the huge forces resulting from a few pounds per square inch over a large area. The outer skin and fwd/aft pressure bulkheads are cylindrical/spherical in shape allowing the structure to be light. 13. I don't think most consider a PC in tow to be a total malfunction. Most jumpers as they get more experience decide to hang on to the handles, because of the cost and because the idea of a long metal cable possibly entangling with a deploying reserve is not comforting. Students are often taught procedures (tossing the handles) that simplify their later tasks (not messing with handles when you have to control the reserve) and hopefully to ensure a handle is pulled completely (although 'dropping' it isn't very effective at that). 16. ...that's a strange expression Bruce! Your canopies must fit very loose in an I-88? Seems like you're 2 sizes too big? 17. That's all well and good for you normal sized people with small rigs. As it is, my rig will just BARELY clear the carryon size restrictions, and a gear bag big enough to hold it would push it over the edge. What i do is tighten the leg straps as far as they'll go, then push them together and wrap a pullup cord around them. Chest strap gets threaded through the reserve handle 6 or 7 times and rubberbanded in place. Can't even tell it's a rig at that point, if you're a whuffo My rig is definitely not small - Infinity I-65, about the same as yours. Lots of carry on stuff is too big per the airline requirements, no surprise there, the airlines don't enforce it. I just accept the fact that there are some circumstances where checking the rig will be required, and so I have appropriate choices in soft gear bags or hard cases. I think there are plenty of regular people that can identify a parachute, even if cleaned up as you describe. Given the way that some people try to put on their rig, it is not surprising they don't like thread-through leg straps. After putting your rig on your back, are you dropping it down to your elbows before trying to put your leg through? 22. Even if you have all the right letters, and the screeners accept that the policy is as stated on the letter, they can still require you to unpack your main and reserve. That is reality, it happened to me at Columbus Ohio. They airline gate agents usually have a roll of really large, really thick plastic bags that are used for late baggage check in of child car seats, strollers, etc. that can be used for checking your rig. The bad part would of course be that your rig is visible and more likely to be stolen. Having a gear bag is also wise to prevent nervous passengers from complaining about the weirdo with the parachute to security. All it would take is one passenger to express discomfort, and I think they will tell you it doesn't matter what the TSA policy is, you will not walk on with it.
