  1. Benefits: increased fitness Drawbacks: if the cause of your fever was a blood pathogen then exercising could cause it to spread through your system quicker than your current immune response can handle and possibly make you sick again. Fever indicates your immune system was in full force. This likely means you used up a lot of stored energy sources in your body. This translates into fatigue, nausea, dehydration, and your body will take even more energy to get your blood pumping and he those muscles moving. This can also lead to passing out if you expend that energy quickly. Your body will be in full cooling mode to relieve the heat of immune response (aka fever). This means that if you start exercising you'll likely experience vasodilation which means you'll be more likely to experience headaches. Your immune system likely told your body to stop producing protein to prevent viral infections from spreading. This is the general cause of "fever aches" by it also means your muscles will take much longer to recuperate from strenuous exercise which means misery the next morning. Despite all that, you'll be fine. You'll just feel like shit for longer. Drink Gatorade, your body is already kind of working out for you. Edit:. And people around you likely wont catch anything since when you break fever you're not likely to be very contagious if at all but it is considerate, plus no one likes to see snot on the mat xD "I would rather be ashes than dust. 2. This is correct. For this particular virus it would take more than a single mutation. Probably more like around 50-100 specific mutations on the same coding region for the surface proteins on the virus. It would have to happen at once as well since altering that much in steps would prevent the virus from being able to do its dirty deed to our cells. pretty much impossible. That said, yeah you can cough and sneeze out ebola. However, pretend that someone had completely covered skin, eyes were covered, and no other path existed but the lungs. No infection would occur because the virus can't invade lung tissue. Therefore, while the virus can fly, it's not an airborne pathogen like the flu. It can make it to the lungs via capillaries, though, which can **** your day up and make it possible to projectile cough it onto someone. All it takes is one tiny opening or pore in skin, or an open eye. This is a serious problem and I remember watching a recent report on TV about the runners that spread the virus because popular belief in cities is that "Doctors are using ebola as a way to try and steal blood" or because they don't want to go to the scary hospital and get treatment. This is just a shame and it's costing so many lives. Because the people running are still contacting each other as well, there is no pressure for the virus to be naturally selected for a less lethal strain. And to add a cherry to the top of that, it's extremely difficult to make a vaccine for this virus. The ways the proteins assemble in the virus make it hard to mimic. On a positive note there are a few vaccines almost complete. ZMAPP in the US and something else I don't know the name of in the UK which is already in the final phase of testing. Both work on the design idea of, "Let's make some antibodies, make them work with human bodies, and inject a (metric) shit ton of them into people" "I would rather be ashes than dust. 3. If you're a US citizen then you can apply for the US Global Entry card. This is something that lets you use TSA Pre-check for any domestic flight. On international flights it also means a bypass through some of the customs bs you normally deal with. I haven't tried to use the card to see if they make me unpack my rig, but that's because I'm poor and don't own one. I'm sure they let that slide with the special card, too. Search US GOES for the online application system. Makes crossing the borders by car easier too (**** San Ysidro) Other tips include expect to come back with more than you take, avoid taking a laptop if you can, wear flip flops on the day of the flight for easier removal during the TSA check, use a passport for identification so you can keep your purse/wallet stowed during checks, and finally, on short flights go for an aisle seat so access to the lavatory is easier. On long international flights go for a window seat so you can rest without getting bumped by others for said lavatory usage. Also, resist the temptation to bail at 10k feet over your destination :P "I would rather be ashes than dust. 4. This is essentially what I was thinking. You could make something like that in a day or so using basic electronics, a small dc motor, and reserve rip cord with a stainless steel pin (yay scavenging). And it could be sewn in anywhere that is best for the application while also being smaller than cutters. However, like riggerrob said, there is possibility of hesitation. However isn't this possibility going to be the same as with a cutter? The other option would be to have multi loop attachment to act as a splicer, but that's just adding complication. One benefit outright is that as far as universal application, you could design something like that to work with any AAD. hmmm.... I shall retreat to my workbench.... 5. My penis. (Ladies *wink wink*) Id say my height but i dont want to sell my self short. "I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather be a majestic eagle riding a missile across the sky with sparklers than be an old couch potato." - Jack London (paraphrased)
  6. Hey all, Maybe someone can tell me why AAD manufacturers use a cutter to release the reserve pilot chute. It seems to me that a cutter would be more likely to fail than, say, a rolling pin design where a pin keeping the closing loop in place were released. Plus cutting through fabric means more replacement and maintenance to ensure proper usage. Thoughts? PS this came after reviewing a certain series of complaints and issues with the Argus system so now I'm really intrigued by the current AAD cutter designs. "I would rather be ashes than dust. 7. The downfall about the micromort (and any descriptive statistics) is that it assumes equal risk and no influence of that risk. The wiki article couldn't have summed it up better: "Micromorts for future activities can only be rough assessments..." Personally I think the better way to look at it is by thinking, "which of the factors within the sport influence risk the most?" rather than trying to just assess general risk. You can't really analyze this stuff scientifically, because I doubt anyone would want to do low turns just to find out how many it takes before s/he dies :P. But you can categorize historical data if you have it and get an idea of what's contributing most to the risk. So I've attached several categorical histograms. It's not an analysis, just a representation of numbers and anyone can interpret it differently. Data from USPA (years not known) number of fatality reports: 106 *** I drive my ZX14 to and from the DZ. Can one of you "number cruncher" type dudes please access the probability of me living to age 60? Cool The magic 8-b.... I mean the statistics say it isn't good. xD "I would rather be ashes than dust. 8. My instructors said it would be good to get a feel for what the earth looks like at pull altitude, but thanks to them I can see it from even lower xP. Didn't even know what ground rush really looked like, but now I know and fuck that :D EDIT: Also, it looks like the one diver checked his altimeter and kept right on smiling as he went for the pull. think he'd have made it? >< "I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather be a majestic eagle riding a missile across the sky with sparklers than be an old couch potato." - Jack London (paraphrased)
  9. I mean yeah I get what this is driving at, but this isn't statistical analysis. It's what's known as descriptive statistics. This kind of number crunching isn't useful for proper analysis because there's no determination of how a particular factor is weighted in risk analysis or whether the binary probability distribution is the right model to use. Yeah it's a risky sport in the sense that you risk your life trusting a variety of factors to come together to get you back on the ground safely. However, are the deaths due to skydiving or the person skydiving? Sweet GLM analysis time. Shit, is this risk significant to p
  10. Perhaps I'm just too much of an idiot to think like a well-esteemed and open-minded individual like Kim (snicker snicker), but let's say skydiving stopped at that airport. Then what? Are general aviation operations to be stopped as well? What's the point of having an airport then? If skydivers move out, GA will move in no question and back to square one. If that does happen y'all should get ultralights and buzz the houses. Nothing wrong with that according to the FARs :P "I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather be a majestic eagle riding a missile across the sky with sparklers than be an old couch potato." - Jack London (paraphrased)
  11. I am definitely not knowledgeable enough in the sport for you to go off what I experience, but when I have an opening after belly-to-earth freefall, I notice that I feel only a small amount of pressure on my shoulders just as the main is being extracted. After that I am usually at a slight angle for the remainder of the opening and I feel most of the opening shock against my legs/hips. Perhaps I'm just not noticing the force, but either way I personally wouldn't want to risk even more time out of the game or inability to deal with a mal or even basic canopy maneuvers if it broke. 12. after yesterday, 90s are my new limit. Got geared up, went through the student dive plan, sweat a little. I was drinking what is tons of water and gatorade for me while waiting during a military shutdown so they could practice air refueling in the dropzone area. one hour later we get the green light. We load up the plane, and everything is HOT. That c182 was cooking at around 110 degrees. As we get to altitude I start feeling dizzy. My instructor tells me to get into position so we can open the door and spot, but as soon as I move I go to tunnel vision. I can hear the engine of the airplane, but I can't even comprehend anything around me and I look up at my instructor who is holding his hand out for a high five for what must have been a while before I snapped to it. I sit for a bit then am lucky enough to be aware enough and make the call that no, I'm not making the jump. I can't even move and when I get helped back into the far back spot I pass right the **** out. I don't even really remember the ride down until I got to the ground. I much preferred that over passing out in the air. Heat-facilitated hypoglaucemia was the culprit. Don't friggin' play around with it was my lesson learned. Turned out that while I was drinking a lot, I wasn't eating enough. The high heat makes your body's metabolic rate shoot up so that it can sweat more and remove heat. While I was hydrated, I had no food for my brain because it was expended. The natural adrenaline rush hid the early symptoms because it's what the mechanism is designed to do, which unfortunately meant I was 2 minutes late from making a TERRIBLE decision **** the heat. Naturally I'm getting flak for taking the slow way down by some of the other jumpers (endearingly of course) "I would rather be ashes than dust. 13. With all them farmers' abduction stories out there, I don't think they're after our produce "I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather be a majestic eagle riding a missile across the sky with sparklers than be an old couch potato." - Jack London (paraphrased)
  14. by bending the rules probably xD. Honestly no one can know but I know that we've been able to work out field energy equations that say we can theoretically "warp" miniscule parts of space time. Essentially we can't travel across space time faster than the speed of light, but we can cheat and move the destination closer to us. Einstein and Rosen termed their idea of this as an einstein-Rosen bridge. then there's the albucier drive which does this warping, but around the ship only so that the ship has a net ftl speed, but is not traveling across space time faster than light. Also theoretical of course then again some theories say that space time involves higher dimensions which may be easier to manipulate for ftl travel. Who knows maybe they just chill in cryopreservation for a million year journey "I would rather be ashes than dust. 15. One thing that troubles me with this whole junk food ban is that the USDA decided to act without "testing the waters." Seeing the arguments in this thread should be testament to the fact that this will have complicated effects that perhaps the USDA does not yet recognize. How hard would it be to implement this at several schools first to assess the benefit or lack thereof before performing a nationwide implementation? I think the USDA is jumping the gun and while I believe in their limit on transfat and refined sugar content, I don't believe in their caloric restriction. There are kids who are more active and need more than just 200 calorie staples in a meal. I'm also worried that the lack of food availability will have a backward effect with kids binge-eating snacks after school due to the lack of food availability at school. I don't have kids, so I'm not entitled to speak about the behavior of a child at home, but I think if eating behavior were modified rather than food availability, this program would be more effective. Again I have no idea of the feasibility of that idea because I'm not a parent.. "I would rather be ashes than dust. 16. So while the article SAYS that the program is halted my buddy's PI (Andrew) at SNL just got renewed funding from the DoD for their bio-sensing initiative... Although they are using the "canary" method of sensing with yeast (silica-coated), not pcr-based sensing. but come on, you and I both know those gen-2 pcr systems had a bit of a hiccup with primer dimers now and again either way I can tell you at least some biosensing research is being performed still "I would rather be ashes than dust. 17. no kidding. To add to that, getting rid of OSHA and EPA laws would make things really shitty in our labs with all the lazy and stingy lab managers we have. Also, since even the work I do still nets me only about 25k/yr, in that country, I would be the guy who gets stomped on while big pharma takes my findings and makes millions since the FDA isn't there to regulate drugs xDDD And please give my bootstraps back :(. I use those to pull myself up. "I would rather be ashes than dust. 18. Yeah.... that post wins x) The last one still makes me laugh. Although, to be honest it's not like usury laws are leak-proof nowadays. Still, that's a grade-A platform if ever I saw one ! 19. So I ended up with "Dick Cheney" in the results. Joking aside, I agree with the comments about this being too narrow. Yeah I see the appeal of 10-question quizzes, but the questions on these types are usually fairly loaded xD I can't wait till I see the first national "Facebook quiz" debate for elections. Screw analysis, I'm not reading more-than-200 character answers! "I would rather be ashes than dust. 20. Epic, I've never seen one in open water so I didn't realize they were that friggin' agile haha. Too right about them looking way better in the open than in a tank "I would rather be ashes than dust. 21. Sounds like you killed everything else which is awesome. I can't wait to freefall man, you make it seems so exciting while I'm over here nervous for the first solo hop and pop xD haha "I would rather be ashes than dust. 22. Meant to hit the reply and cursor jumped to the add friend thingy. Oops xD ah well, I'm new here actually, but I saw you were from Quebec and I'm talkative. What DZs there are out there because I'm heading to Quebec for a conference in august (hoping to have my A-lic. by then :D) Also Hi! "I would rather be ashes than dust. 23. Hey all, Name's Clifford and I'm an IAD student from New Mexico trying to become less a frantic swimmer in Cat-B and more a skydiver that can pull his own pilot chute x) Definitely enjoying the sport so far and looking forward to being more involved! Nice to meet y'all in advance! "I would rather be ashes than dust.
