  1. Sorry, Bill! You're wrong. Yes, there are medications that are administered for growth reasons, it is not the reason that all of the meds are administered. Most of the antibiotics administered to cattle are utilized as preventatives. They are, also, administered antihelmentics as preventatives as well. And while there are pros/cons against administering antibiotics as preventatives, the over-riding concern and requirement for their usage is for the safety of the food we consume and to prevent an outbreak among the cattle themselves while they are at the farmers and the feedlots. 2. The original idea of PETA - the humane and ethical treatment of animals - is a good one. However, PETA doesn't always live by what they preach and do have blood on their hands. http://consumerfreedom.com/news_detail.cfm/h/3859-peta-kills-animals-and-the-news-is-spreading-like-wildfire http://consumerfreedom.com/news_detail.cfm/h/3856-peta-killed-a-record-number-of-pets-in-2008 http://www.consumerfreedom.com/pressRelease_detail.cfm/r/148-peta-still-kills-animals http://www.petakillsanimals.com/ http://www.nokillnow.com/PETAIngridNewkirkResign.htm http://www.newsweek.com/id/134549/ http://www.infowars.com/peta-kills-animals/ http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/item_KFbqp3jfid9rxcEbXBxANN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_for_the_Ethical_Treatment_of_Animals#Policy_on_euthanasia http://www.webcommentary.com/php/ShowArticle.php?id=barrettt&date=070129 *sigh* I hate it when animals of any kind are abused by ANYONE. I hate it when humans are abused. There is no 1 place or person that will "fix" everything. We must all do our part - daily - by our actions and words. When money is involved - people do like paychecks, eating, and being able to live - no one will ever be 100% happy with the situations and there will always be those examples out there that are inexcusable on both sides of the line. Unfortunately, until everyone treats every living being the way they wanted to be treated, there will always be blood on both sides. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! 4. Ok...this is going to be a fun thread to try and keep out of SC. A lot of those videos are from the "olden" days. Those plants that the USDA allows to have their stamp on it, do humane slaughter which has standards - and don't get me started on the places that do ritual slaughter for religious reasons as they would probably manage to get your blood to boil worse than it already is. The USDA through the FSIS does plant inspections and any allegations against slaughter houses are investigated and dealt with appropriately. By the way, here's a place to get started on the Humane Slaughter Act instead of Wikipedia. They are trying to get even more enforcement not less. Am I saying that abuse doesn't happen? Not at all. I'm sure it does and is dealt with in the ways allowed by law. Another thing to keep in mind is that while an animal's head may be severed from it's body, that does not mean that all nervous impulses stop at once. There are still physiological functions happening for quite a few minutes after what most people consider death. It takes awhile for "death" to happen (animals as well as people). And when I say death, I'm talking the no movement at all that most people view as death. There are, also, reasons for animal "parts" to be left attached to the corpse after death - i.e. inspection as there are certain diseases that may not be outwardly visible and only does internal damage that could affect your health (aka the person eating the meat). LOL - Simple marketing program to stop it? You must have more faith in the human population than I. For as long as there are people alive, there will be animals eaten for food, slaughtered, abused, etc. Not every person nor country feels the same way about animals be it dogs, cats, horses, cows, chickens, etc. For example while the US is my home, I currently live in a country where animals are viewed as animals and are kicked, deliberately hit by vehicles, etc. and it's not viewed as "abnormal" by a lot of people. At the same time, there are people in this country that think of the animals as their pets...not family...but pets. Dogs and cats are left to roam free and get what food and water they can on the streets. Cows, donkeys, and sheep while owned by someone freely wander as well (talk about being fun driving at night trying to avoid hitting a herd of sheep or a couple of cows). And while it is hard for me to deal with at times, it is their culture...their country...and when the wages are such that it is here (some people still have outhouses and live with no electricity), it boils down to cultural, lack of knowledge, and financial issues. ASPCA does what they can, and so does every other humane society. Reality check - there are not enough dollars, homes, nor people that care to take care of all animals. If you seriously want to do something about the situation, donate your time and money to shelters helping them find homes for animals, adopt an animal from a shelter instead of going to the breeder or pet store to buy your pet, get more inspectors for the food inspection plants, etc. Get involved in ensuring that the politicians in your state are actively keeping an eye on the welfare of animals. And when you decide to donate your time and money to an animal welfare agency, you'll want to investigate that agency as well. Not all agencies have their hands clean - some of them are just as bloody as the ones that do the abusing. Want to help? One way is to stop eating meat. As long as people eat meat, there will be animals that are slaughtered for food. As long as people buy from pet stores, there will be puppy mills. You want tighter controls over the slaughtering houses/puppy mills/etc. - how do you like your taxes? And, yes, I am in veterinary school and will soon be Dr. Cora, DVM. [edited to add:] Damn it! I'm in SC. GRRR!!! Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.
  5. Whoops! I thought you guys liked that stuff??? ETA: just realized I hijacked this thread SORRY! Meh - Cora won't be back for a few months anyway . . . Remi - I don't have time for a man right now. A man would be someone I'd be interested in keeping around. The "boy" would just be a play toy for the remaining time I'm here. Well...and he'd have to have dinner ready for me. amstalder - No worries! If a thread didn't get hijacked in Bonfire, I'd be floored! Turtle - Are you sure about that? Life is short! Break the rules! 6. Just got out of the movie and agree with jakee. FYI - I would pay $10 US to see it. I, also, think I may have come up with a great Halloween costume. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.
  7. Heading out in 40 minutes to go see it. I'll let you know. Of course, it only costs $5US for me to see down here.
  8. For those that remember me....thought I'd stop by and say hi since I really haven't been around much. School's going well, and the island is well...the island. The island has definitely taught me a lot about appreciating what I have in the states. I did end up going to South Africa in August for 2 weeks and had a wonderful time. I fell in love with the place and the wildlife! I never knew I'd think rhino's were adorable!
  9. BWAHAHAHAHAHA - nope...not me. [She quipped, laughing at first, but then quietly taken with thoughts of how much fun it might be to actually participate in this mischievous little game herself....] You guys don't give up, do you? Maybe one day, I'll participate...but today isn't it. Off to an exam! (Never thought I'd see the day when an exam is my savior. ) The latest rack is nice...cute bra. Once the person's outed, is the bra Victoria's Secret? Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.

  11. I, also, put in the refrigerator coffee nuts fruits cooking oils I pretty much do what Guppie does plus some additionals. If you leave anything out, the ants and bugs get all over it or it gets rancid with the heat. So, it's easier to put it all in the fridge (especially with as pricey as the stuff is), and just take it out to warm up a few minutes before needing it. Life is short! Break the rules! 12. Glad you're ok and the situation didn't turn out worse. I do vote for a big friend with a deep bark for your chihuahua. Also, Radio Shack sells alarms for windows and doors if you don't want to pay for a monitoring service. They're run on batteries and can wake the dead if they go off. Just another option. 13. Certified and able to use an AED.
  14. On here a little over a month and have annoyed the shit out of a bunch of people. That's entertaining. And, the community is small...very small and I'm not just talking the US skydiving population...I'm talking worldwide. May want to keep it in mind. Oh...regarding your comment about a woman liking a man in leathers...nah...not impressive. Most of the women that I know have their own gear and their own ride. What makes/breaks a man isn't what he wears...it's his attitude. Good luck with yours. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. 21. In that case stick with Deedy's Option #1. That's not the kind of shaved & slick look that J., Cheese, and I are experts on. ......Am I paranoid, or are my thread bumps getting reeeallllly obvious? Hmmm...... Not sure.....let's see what you bump next.... So...are we taking bets on when he bumps it next? Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably.
