    Organising balloon jump

I jumped a balloon at Dunkerswell a few years back and landed on DZ. Most balloon companies in the UK will run a mile but this one was run by a former RAF Typhoon pilot and jumper so he was less risk averse. We got c. 5,000 feet. Be aware that you will likely be landing in an unknown location, unless they can out you over a DZ. You will need to have an idea of wind direction on the ground (balloon direction should help with this but not guaranteed to be the same on the ground) and will need to know how to spot potential obstacles for landing - for example in Spain the last thing you want is to spot a landing area from 5k and then find out it's a field of olive trees. You'll also need to plan a pick up solution - someone to follow the balloon on the ground and pick you up when you land. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
  2. Agreed. Tramontana is a pain - that's why I said lots to do if the weather isn't great - like a massive wind tunnel! CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
  3. I did AFF in Spain (a long time ago) and it is a great way to combine a holiday and get your license. It's worth checking which system they operate under in Madrid - is it BPA (British) or not as this may affect your return to Ireland. Check out https://www.facebook.com/AbsoluteSkydiving/?pnref=about.overview in Empuria Brava. It's a great DZ, lots to do if the weather isn't perfect and Nigel is a great instructor... Is this jumpsuit too tight? (pics)

My first jumpsuit was similar in tightness to this and I had real fall rate issues when jumping with other newbs. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
  5. For Cambridge I would recommend Sibson or Chatteris - more going on at Sibson, better plane at Chatteris. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
  6. BPA membership is mainly insurance. Not sure if your German equivalent will cover you as well but if it doesn't include insurance then BPA is probably required. The club may also charge a membership fee. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

    Wingsuiters that freefly - help!

I use a clip from a puppies collar (when my dog was a puppy). One half is attached to a keyring loop, on one leg loop and the other is on the bungee, through the other loop. It clips open and closed and works well. Checked with my rigger and they were cool with it. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

    Stupid things I have done

No it's not. I stood down from a load the other day whilst we were walking to the plane. When I told manifest they said "good call". CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Mal - mmmm - what would you have done different ?

Ah, the subtle nuances of the written word online. I was being sarcastic. Based on my experience of a mal, shortly after cutting away and pulling reserve I ejected both handles and then spent two hours walking around in a field looking for them. It's all the rage. Mal - mmmm - what would you have done different ?

I would have chopped earlier, it seemed clear that wasn't going anywhere good but if he worked to his hard deck then fine. His canopy control was a bit shit, especially the last 500 feet. Also, based on personal experience, I would have dropped my handles. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

  12. Losing a bit of weight may help in general in the long run, not least with fall rate - i.e. how fast you fall in relation to others. You are not too big to jump and you can compensate with larger suits and canopies but in general it wouldn't hurt to lose a few pounds... CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Student jumping solos in the UK

I came back from Spain with 17 jumps and completed my final consolidation jump in the UK with no refresher. Take your log books, expect to be grilled and at worst case expect to have an accompanied jump but otherwise I think you should be OK. Another option is to email the DZ you are expecting to jump at in the UK and ask them what additional info they require... CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
  14. I have had the leg straps slide down my legs just in a sit and wouldn't jump without. I rigged up a small clip (from a puppy collar) onto a key ring circle and elastic to make them easy to clip on and off when switching between freefly and wingsuit. As with a poster above - why would you not have them?! CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
  15. I imagine CanCan would have some choice words on this subject! I have taken a photo in the plane and texted it to someone at 3k but wouldn't dream of using a phone under canopy - please let me know if you're on the same lift as me so I can avoid you! Really, this is a bad idea. If you want a good picture get someone to get you landing or in the air. ETA: looking again at your poll options it looks like you are just having fun and it is being lost in the noise of the internet. Let this be the case! CJP Gods don't kill people. Open reserve container in C-182

One would assume that his 'minimal movement' dislodged the pin. I'd be interested to know if the jumper, or anyone esle, checked the seating of the reserve pin prior to the jump and whether or not there was a lot of play in the reserve cable i.e. could body movement and flex of the cable within the harness had an effect. I once had a main open in a very cramped plane when I was shifting my body to try and give a tandem room. I had my back to the rear wall of the plane (Beaver) and pushed back and felt it go. I too restrained it until landing, although this being Oz everyone else left the aircraft and I had to manage on my own with an open container! CJP Gods don't kill people. Is 20+ years too old for a reserve parachute?

I may be able to shed some light on the original rig for sale. Talon is a brand made by Parachutes Australia. My first Talon had a Maverick 200 as a main. It was an F111 7 cell. It was pretty horrible, very heavy (and shit) flare. I also think it is Australian so it sounds like the whole rig is well traveled. I didn't know they used it as a reserve however. On another note I just bought a new PD160 to replace my old PD160 reserve that was DOM 1991. I got a call from my rigger and another guy on the DZ had offered me £200 ($300) for the reserve which I snapped up!! My rigger recommended sending it back to PD at 25 years old for a health check. I used it once and it flew very nicely!! CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Last stage AFF the hop and pop

I'm going to add one thing. Don't just do one! Whether it is shortly after Aff or a couple of months later remember to chuck in an occasional low exit. It's fun and good drills. Many of us started on static line so don't have the same fear of low exits that pervades modern day aff students. A dz I used to jump at in Oz made students do 3 to pass Aff. 5k,4k and 3k. I think this is a great idea! CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

    Nooby canopy advice

Depending on your exit weight and number of jumps a 220 is likely to be on the large side for a first canopy but without more info it's hard to tell. If you are a big person then 220 may work for you but if you are a tiny little person then it may be big. What other canopies does the DZ have that you may be able to test? What is your exit weight? Speak to your instructors about a first rig that would be suitable for you above all else. I'm 6'2" and 80 kilos. I had a 200sq ft 7 cell, followed by a 170, 9 cell (at c. 100 jumps) then a 150 sq ft Sabre at c. 260 jumps. I'm still on a 150. Don't be in a rush to downsize but try and buy something that you can enjoy... Edited to amend jump numbers CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

    Lasik or PRK?

I had LASEK about 5 years ago - I couldn't get LASIK due to issues with my eyes. I was in quite a lot of pain for about a week. I think taken in isolation the pain wasn't that bad - itchy eyes basically - but it was relentless and I couldn't sleep and it built up to the point when I just wanted to curl up and die. That said I would do it again in a heartbeat as I now have better than 2020 vision. The only downside is that, personally, my night vision is not as good as it was before but not awful, just lots of starring (if that makes sense...). One of my biggest fears before the surgery was losing both lenses in freefall as I just don't know how I would have landed safely! I did the same research when I had it done too - there may even be a thread somewhere... CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Audible altimeter freefall warning altitudes ...

Agreed. A friend of mine and I were chatting one day about this. He set his to 8k (half way through (no idea why)), 4.5k (breakoff), and 3k (pull). We discussed that this might be a bit silly as one of the benefits was the hard deck warning. He proceeded to change it to 4.5k, 3k, 1.5k. A few weeks later when he went jumping he forgot that he had changed it (I think you can see where this is going...), was at a new DZ where they happened to exit a bit lower on that jump (10k not 14k). He did a solo head down jump, tracked onto his back at the second warning and flipped onto his belly at the third and deployed. He was directly above the DZ at c. 1400 feet. He was grounded for some time and told to think about what he had done. He never did it again. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Why not to freefly a Talon.

I had a Talon for years and it was great but the tuck tabs did go eventually. I replaced the rig when I just couldn't get one of them to stay shut, even after a rigger had had a look. It was just time for that rig I think. Generally it was awesome but rigs do age and wear and tear takes it's toll. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
