  1. Got my a license last Summer and after a few hiccups along the way, finished the season fairly confident. Set goals for the next year to 1. get my B license 2.get involved in RW 3. get past 100 jumps with enough skills to get a Coach rating so I could begin to give back to the sport. Over the Winter I did 2.5 hours between 2 tunnels, 2 Canopy courses and filled my canopy card, and did some fantastic coached jumps which showed me a way of teaching which left me feeling positive about myself and about my skills. My season is pretty well ended and I am 0 for 3 on my goals and feel like I have gone backwards in my development. I am trying to come up with a plan to avoid a repeat. In retrospect, I may have allowed too much time between my winter trip and my local season, which admittedly came late this year. Also, I noticed that my DZ setting seemed to make a significant difference for me in many ways. Unfortunately I seem to thrive best at a DZ 7 hours away. Still one plan might be to jump less frequently, but instead make the trip and spend multiple days making a lot of jumps at a time. More tunnel time might also be in order, but I might want to move it closer to my jump season.Lastly, is a Winter trip even worthwhile at my stage and in light of my lack of lasting improvement? Your thoughts, ideas and comments will definitely be taken into consideration. Thanks
  2. So, if you gave at the office do you have to give at home?
  3. Kind of an old thread to revive, but I recently bought both seasons on DVD from Amazon and watched the entire first season in a day. I watched the show as a kid when I could convince the rest of the family. I suspect the show planted the seed for me. Of course the old strutted C210 amazed me and I loved the skydiving scenes. Of course the gear and technique are a little out of date
  4. I just returned from a weekend at Skydive Chicago and as a low jump number Skydiver I do have a couple observations. First, the DZ briefing recommends jumping with a phone and has some suggestions about off landings and how to deal with them. Second, the landing areas are HUGE. The under 1000 jump area is well separated from the 1000+ area and even more separated from the swoop area. Third, the staff and organizers are fantastic. Even during a day of weather holds their attitude and vibe made it a great place to be. Have a great time at Summerfest and stay safe.
  5. I bought one of these after seeing it at SDC. So far, I like it although I am getting more aware of it and not having to deliberately pay attenention to it. One more point in Elemental's favor is their customer service! Brian was was super responsive when I had a concern with my unit.Quote
  6. This old guy thinks it is cute and you two are fortunate people. I just wish the wedding had been on a different date so I would have been able to meet the two of you. Oh well, maybe next winter

    Show Me The Money

It is not enough to build a great Web Site, that sight needs to be refreshed and maintained on a regular basis. I am amazes at how DZs go years without updating content and don't even keep their events listings current.
  8. Made 6 round jumps back in 1977. I have been back jumping for just over a year now and my take is, "my worst landing under a square was just an average Round
  9. Not a jumping weekend. Looking at thunderstorms in bunches this weekend. No reason to whine, spent a couple of days at Skydive Chicago and knocked out the freefall time requirement for my B. Plus I got to share the plane with a couple of teams in training and was able to watch how they conduct themselves and maximize the value of each jump. As a bonus, they were wonderful people.
  10. I recently made a jump with another jumper using one. I was so impressed I ordered one for myself. It seemed simple as a hammer and easy to set up and use. I am still a newer jumper and I like the idea of one more reminder to watch my altitude.
  11. Welcome to the sport. I am starting my second season jumping in MN and I am still amazed at the number of DZs in the area even with the long winters. Hope your runway dries out soon and you can get into your AFP progression. Blue Skies
  12. Deland does not seem to get a lot of love in the skydiving community. My experience was one of a place where I could improve my knowledge and skills by training with top notch professionals as well as met some of the people responsible for making the gear I depend on. Even with less than ideal weather-3 0f 6 days were jumpable, I found the trip to be a fantastic learning opportunity and I am already developing an agenda for my next trip. Thanks DeLand, Flight-1, and Skydive U.
  13. Your problem with the website is one I also had had. Calling seems the most reliable contact. When I was in DeLand I went by and I could not have been treated any better. Not only do they make great gear, but they are grade A people.
  14. Thanks, that makes sense. It also occurred to me that I was learning Mantis and had a different body position and arch.
  15. I noticed that my speed in the tunnel was about 10-15 mph higher in the tunnel than what I record on my Viso. Do the speeds normally vary that much? Also, the tunnel was app 4500 feet higher altitude, does that have an effect? I am trying to get the most transfer of what I learned in the tunnel to what I do in the sky.
  16. Unfortunately is right. On the other hand, I have noticed that often what appears to be stupid is actually just laziness or sloppiness. Now those can be corrected with adequate amounts of the proper motivation.

    BEWARE!

So who is it that has a lean and hungry look?
  18. Congratulations to both of you. You picked a good weekend for a wedding, cause it sure was not jumping weather at DeLand Wishing you both many happy years together and much joy.
  19. According to my logbook I was cleared for free fall 11/18/1977,my next jump was a tandem 04/26/2013.
  20. As in X degrees below Zero Fahrenheit. Not necessary if you use the Kelvin scale which starts at absolute zero and all measurements are positive numbers. The minus Zero portion of the thermometer is where Brass monkey warnings are issued in frigid climates,
  21. I don't want to hear it. We are headed for another day of minus zero F for a high. Deland, here I come!
  22. Well, gathered up my courage and signed up for Flight-1 101 and probably 102 and contacted Skydive U about coaching. Deland here I come. Can't say that I am not nervous, but I also can't wait to see temperatures above 40 and ground that isn't white. I am on a mission to learn to suck less at skydiving and have 75 minutes at SVCO the following month. Thank you to all who offered advice and encouragement. See you in February.
  23. I did a short 6 minutes of tunnel between static line and free fall and I feel it was helpful. Now that I have my A license I am going back for 75 minutes to improve my FS skills. For me, I was able to have some assurance that I could achieve or regain stability as I progressed.
