  1. To get back on track... Sure his exit speed was 601 KM/h I thought speed skydiving was like WS performance. Your average speed over the window is what is recorded not the peak speed at exit. why have the window and not just a single altitude for recording?
  2. Since the survey was very limited here are some comments - the type of mount you can use is highly depended on the helmet you have - Cookie roller mount design is pretty much ideal for skydiving in my opinion for gopro users but these are expensive and not available for all helmet styles - most people don't care about camera safety and make no effort to even prevent snags
  3. Flysight is not going to help a beginner with timing a flare GPS accuracy in the vertical direction is measured in meters. While useful for a high performance turn from a few hundred feet I do not know if the resolution is good enough with a 5hz logging frequency and a flare from a few meter us to capture anything useful.
  4. Something else to look at How long are the brake lines, they may be too long/short and you are not getting the full flare out of the canopy. Too long: don't get a full flare Too short: less airspeed = less lift I have only a few jumps on a friend's volt but that canopy is defiantly not lacking in flare power (1.2-1.3 WL). Way more than my pilot in the same size. Get some experienced jumpers to film you and offer suggestions as said above
  5. Steven I'm disappointed, you need to be looking here if you going to fly camera for us: http://www.red.com/products Think you will need to wait till after launch for some user feedback though
  6. On a side note, I think the warnings get too overboard. Well at least more experienced jumpers agree with me. The amount of people I know hospitalized due to skydiving is more than any other sport I have participated in. Unfortunately for some it was worse... To get things back on topic: Is the rigger requirement only for Tandem systems in the USA or something specified by the manufacturer for general use. Our DZO is a rigger but he sure as hell doesn't watch the packers at work. Is this requirment common between all tandem systems? In SA if you have passed a packing test at your DZ you are good to go with packing student and sport gear (not tandems, not sure what they do)
  7. More of this please An "instructor" sold my friend a 91 to jump (loaded around 1.9) when he was sub 500 jumps. Of course he started jumping the thing When I raised this as a safety issue I was told that just because I am not ready for such a small canopy it doesn't mean he isn't. So far all the bones are still inside his legs and I am hoping his skill level can catch up to the wing he is flying before he breaks himself
  8. exactly... Your post sounds a LOT like a lawyer fishing for information. Parachutes can malfunction and skydiving is not a safe sport. There is a reason for all the paperwork, people die doing this and you need to accept that. If you are an actual student it is best to understand this up front. A slow canopy downsizing progression and conservative choices are the best ways to minimise risk. Once you have packed a parachute a few hundred times it is just a routine you follow so even "if" some packer was high or hung over they are probably going to do an OK job. If you are still not happy go to another DZ where the packers don't look stoned and the DZ has a USPA membership Another alternative is go do a Static Line course where any kid/hippie/pet can pack your main parachute and then there are no worries about riggers watching the process...
  9. I am very happy with my new tony suit, only have about 60 4way fs jumps on it so far so cannot comment on durability. Fit is great considering I measured it to be tight, allowed me to drop 2kg of lead compared to old suit. Probably not what you want for big way though unless you option slower material Mega booties are powerful and there is an option for even larger booties or inflatable. Previous suit had bev suit style booties Customer service was not the best though
  10. Volume is adjustable on the quattro, turn it down if it is too loud Personally I like wearing ear plugs because plane and freefall noise will damage hearing over time.
  11. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4725465;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread 2 posts down from exactly where you posted this...
  12. I do not jump a Ps main but a large number of my friends do. The hurricane is very popular in SA. It's been compared to the stiletto. Snappy toggle turns, good flare, short recovery arc on fronts. I have limited jumps on this canopy but the glide ratio is definitely steeper than my pilot. It's popular for being fun to fly and having a good flare. Not sure about the Venus. It's fairly similar to the hurricane I think. Only afew people jumping them here and I have not really asked their opinion. Vmax, never seen one in the air. A guy I know with one says he is not current enough to jump it so sticks to his sensei. Regarding the pilot 7, how are ws openings? I have one rig that is used for FS and ws and the regular pilot works well for that. I would be disappointed if the 7 cell could not be comfortably used for terminal jumps as I am hoping to demo one.
  13. I have 300+ jumps on a Rev2 None of the cookie sizes were comfortable for me (weird shape head maybe?). I would have gone for the Aero had it been out but I like my helmet none the less. The open face is less useful and a go-pro mounted on the visor half can be a bit annoying in a small plane when the visor is fully open as it sticks past the back of your head. However I won't jump a camera without a cutaway system and bonehead is the only full face manufacturer installing them as standard. I disagree with the other post about the Teflon cable being a snag hazard. I want the cable to be easy to grab if shit goes wrong
  14. Slider size correct? See if you can measure it and compare it to another person's canopy How much slack is in the brake lines before they deflect the tail of the canopy (after releasing them). Don't think I have heard of worn cross ports before.
  15. I'm looking for some recommendations on technical references related to parachute and harness/container design. If you have a link to the documents that would be most helpful. Feel free to pm any less legal download options if you are that sort of person . I have found some good stuff by Lingard related to larger parachutes for aerial delivery system design. Any thing similar would be great. A bunch of interesting looking links are all behind pay walls. Poynter is a bit expensive for interested reading but seems to be the Bible when it comes to this
  16. I know Parachute Systems offers a number of options Cutaway: Puff or Loop Reserve: Puff, Loop or Hard I recently ordered a new rig with a metal D-ring reserve handle and RSL. I have jumped a soft reserve handle for 3 years now but I decided on my first custom rig to go to a D-ring as I know I will never be cool but would like to give myself every chance when I need it
  17. Beach load in bathing suits with friends at a boogie after a really hot day, oh and the beer was waiting at the landing area
  18. A few people I know got their containers back, they were quick to get their orders in though The orders with things like custom embroidery are taking longer from speaking to a PS rep
  19. Getting on a load to do 4 way in the morning after a heavy night drinking just as the headache and nausea are peeking naked tracking jump, i pitched holding the goods as I was terrified of the nut-under mal Did a xmas jump with a rudolph wingsuiter, rodeo passenger dressed as santa and 3 elves tracking alongside and just made the beach after exiting well out to sea
  20. So this seems like something new for a WS, like the slat system used on an OSP or Outlaw BASE canopy is how I interpret it.
  21. There was lots of hate on FB about the project being over hyped etc. but looks like its been deleted Hitting the target is not the point, hitting the target as accurately as possible was the idea I agree there are other stunts that had higher risk factors but you also only saw the success on youtube. no telling how many failed attempts it took I also seem to remember seeing something like them maybe adding target strikes into the WWL for this year too. Time will tell if it happens I was excited to watch it on Chinese TV this weekend but with the weather delays it was over before i got a chance on Sunday
  22. After tracking down a rigger who has packed a smart 150 lpv it seems it will fit a 135 vortex container I cannot justify a 2nd full rig at the moment. The cost of a new main, reserve, aad and half a container is outside the budget The 135 should be a system I use for a long time. Don't see myself going smaller
  23. So at our nationals this past weekend I won 50% off a new container. I wasn't really in the market to buy a new one as my current container is like an old friend and has served me well for 350+ jumps. That said who doesn't like new toys when they suddenly become more affordable. My current main is a 140 pilot which I won't be changing for a while as the rig is for WS and FS. I also have a cypress 2 I would want to move to the new rig. I am leaning towards a 150 size reserve (~1.25WL). I am not comfortable with a higher WL if I am not conscious during landing (e.g. cypress fire after a knock to the head). I suspect this is going to result in much name calling around the bonfire about me resembling a cat. Looking at the manufacturer's chart a 150 reserve will fit in a 135 container but it's going to be a tight fit for the main and reserve and I am thinking that chart does not account for the reduction in space due to the AAD. So then I started looking at low bulk reserves. Except I am not sure how much I can trust volume comparisons between manufacturers. Parachute systems decelerator 150 : 350 cu.in Aerodyne Smart 150 : 346 cu.in Aerodyne Smart LPV 150 : 335 cu.in PD Optimum 160: ? (didn't see it on their website) Basically I have the following questions: 1) rough idea on the pack volume an AAD 2) Do low bulk reserves really pack a size smaller and is that enough to reduce a tight fit to a regular one 3) How do an Optimum and Smart LPV compare size wize 4) Do I really want to go from packing a 140 into a 170 d-bag into a 135 d-bag when I could save the pain and be drinking beer just to look cooler with my small rig
  24. I have no experience with any of them However the videos from Sfly of the Cruise+ are damn fine. The pilots are world class though
  25. I fly a phantom 3 and my friend has a freak. We are the same build and weight (the p3 was his suit) It is defiantly doable, you will need to fly the suit dirty but not so much you cannot get docks or anything. Legs bent and knees together to kill the speed It makes me sad at break off when he goes max and disappears. I am often unzipped when I see him deploying in the distance at a similar altitude.
